Lions make more cuts in advance of the roster deadline

The Detroit Lions make more cuts in advance of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline

It’s a busy weekend at Detroit Lions headquarters in Allen Park. With the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline looming on Tuesday afternoon, the Lions continue to make some early cuts ahead of the deadline.

After letting go of veteran defensive lineman Christian Covington on Saturday, the Lions trimmed some more players. Tight end Daniel Helm and center Alex Mollette have been waived, per various reports.

Both Helm and Mollette were signed after training camp began, which made them longshot projections to begin with. Expect more cuts throughout the rest of the time before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.

Helm and Mollette are subject to waiver claims; Covington is not because he’s a vested veteran. Note that the waiver claim process does not start until Wednesday,  after all cuts have been made.

Lions add 2 players, waive injured WR Trey Quinn

The Detroit Lions signed two players and waived injured WR Trey Quinn

The Detroit Lions only held a walkthrough practice session on Tuesday, one that was closed to the media. They did complete a couple of transactions, however.

The Lions officially signed center Alex Mollette a day after reports indicated the deal was imminent. Detroit also re-signed wide receiver Avery Davis.

Davis is back with the Lions after a very short stint on the unemployment line. Signed initially on August 5th, the wideout was then waived on August 9th, before the preseason opener.

Davis replaces injured wideout Trey Quinn, who was waived with injury status on Tuesday. Quinn caught one pass for eight yards in the exhibition win over the Giants.

Lions to sign C Alex Mollette to help fill OL depth

The Detroit Lions are signing former XFL center Alex Mollette to reinforce the OL depth

The churning of players at the bottom of the Detroit Lions depth chart continues. Detroit is signing center Alex Mollette to a roster spot after a workout over the weekend. Aaron Wilson was the first to report the signing.

Mollette comes to the Lions after a successful stint with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL. The 25-year-old started at center for Houston and helped pave the way for one of the XFL’s top ground games. He was with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 as an undrafted free agent from Marshall but did not make it beyond the final roster cutdowns. Mollette started 46 games at center and guard for the Thundering Herd.

The Lions needed another center after losing top backup Ross Pierschbacher to an injury in the preseason-opening win over the New York Giants. Pierschbacher was released with an injury settlement after the game.

Detroit had one spot open on the 90-man roster. When the Mollette signing becomes official, the Lions roster will be full once again.

Colts waive C Alex Mollette, RB C.J. Verdell

The Colts waived C Alex Mollette and RB C.J. Verdell to bring the roster to 80 players.

The Indianapolis Colts waived center Alex Mollette and running back C.J. Verdell, the team announced Tuesday.

Following the second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, the Colts had to let go of four players on the roster to cut the squad down to 80 players for the final week of training camp.

Both Mollette and Verdell were undrafted free agents who signed with the Colts this offseason. Both players were at positions that had some solid depth, and it was going to be a long shot to make the roster in the first place.

With that said, both players are candidates for the practice squad when the final cuts are made following the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Colts sign C Alex Mollette, place two on IR

The Colts signed C Alex Mollette and placed two on the injured reserve list.

The Indianapolis Colts signed center Alex Mollette and placed offensive tackle Carter O’Donnell and wide receiver John Hurst on the injured reserve list, the team announced Tuesday.

O’Donnell left the practice early on Saturday night and didn’t return. It isn’t clear what happened with Hurst, who signed with the team just before training camp started.

What is clear is that their season is over. Any player placed on the injured reserve list before roster cuts are not allowed to return unless they get waived with an injury settlement.

Mollette re-joins the Colts after being among the first wave of undrafted rookie free agents to sign with the team following the 2022 NFL draft.
