Jets Injury Report: An illness keeps Robby Anderson out of practice on Thursday

Jets wideout Robby Anderson was a non-participant in practice on Thursday due to an illness that resulted in him being sent home.

Add Robby Anderson to the list of Jets who have succumbed to illness in recent weeks.

Anderson was sent home from team facilities and did not practice on Thursday. Tom Compton (calf) and Demaryius Thomas (knee/hamstring) were also sidelined due to injury.

Anderson’s illness doesn’t seem to be serious and his status for this week is not currently in question. The Jets will need Anderson on the field if they want to have any chance at knocking off Pittsburgh, as the Temple product has been on a tear in recent weeks.

Compton and Thomas have not practiced this week and are questionable for Sunday’s game against the Steelers in Week 16. New York signed wide receiver Josh Malone to their active roster on Thursday, which could be an indication of the direction Thomas is trending with Sunday approaching.

Jamal Adams, Henry Anderson, Kelvin Beachum, Arthur Maulet, Steve McLendon, Brian Poole, Bilal Powell, Quinnen Williams and B.J. Bello were all limited in practice on Thursday. All nine players are trending towards suiting up against the Steelers.

Jets Injury Report: Jamal Adams, Quinnen Williams limited on Wednesday

Jets Injury Report 12/18.

Jamal Adams and Quinnen Williams both took a major step in the right direction on Wednesday, as they participated in practice on a limited basis.

Adams (ankle) and Williams (neck) are now positioned to return to action against the Steelers on Sunday barring any setbacks. Williams sat out New York’s Thursday night matchup with the Ravens last week after suffering a stinger against the Dolphins, while Adams has missed Gang Green’s last two games after injuring his ankle against the Bengals in Week 13.

“The chances of me playing this week are very high,” Adams said after practice.

Adams isn’t the only Jets defensive back who could return against Pittsburgh. Cornerback Brian Poole is in the later stages of concussion protocol and could play against the Steelers assuming he passes testing.

As for Wednesday’s non-participants, Tom Compton sat out with a calf injury. If Compton can’t go against Pittsburgh, the Jets will turn to either Conor McDermott or Brent Qvale, who was activated from injured reserve last week.

Demaryius Thomas also missed practice on Wednesday due to knee and hamstring injuries. Thomas did not play against the Ravens and his status against Steelers is up in the air.

6 young Jets with a chance to impress over New York’s final 2 games

The Jets Wire takes a crack at listing the six young Jets players with a chance to make a name for themselves with two games remaining.

With the Jets having just two games remaining this season, the team has a real chance to take a seat and step into self-evaluation mode.

New York has nothing to play for, while its next two opponents, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, have playoff sights with two weeks remaining in the 2019 season. Now is a chance for the Jets’ young players to step up, especially with the injury bug allowing for these opportunities.

The Jets have used 70 players this season, which is the most in the NFL. When Jeff Smith, a UDFA WR out of Boston Collge was placed on injured reserve, he became the 17th Jet to hit IR this season. That high number has enabled some of the Jets’ younger players, including multiple names from the 2019 draft class, to see increased playing time.

With that said, here are six young Jets with a chance to impress over New York’s final two games.

The Jets’ fourth-round pick out of West Virginia has seen limited playing time, mostly as a full-back, but Wesco has a chance to see increased opportunities.

New York placed Ryan Griffin on season-ending injured reserve with an ankle injury, while Daniel Brown missed multiple assignments in the Jets’ 42-21 loss to Baltimore.

Wesco has one career catch for 15 yards and one rushing attempt for two yards. Both of his touches came in the Jets’ 34-27 win over the Giants. With Sam Darnold in need of another security blanket, look for Wesco to make an impact in both the passing and blocking game.

Jets vs. Ravens inactives: New York missing numerous starters against Baltimore

Jets vs. Ravens inactives for Thursday night football in Week 15.

If you thought the Jets were missing a lot of impact players against the Miami Dolphins in Week 14, think again.

New York will be without eight starters against the Ravens on Thursday night, as Jamal Adams, Quinnen Williams, Chuma Edoga, Brian Poole, Demaryius Thomas, Arthur Maulet, Kyron Brown and Ryan Griffin are all out against Baltimore due to injuries. Brown (quad) was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Monday after making his first career start against Miami, while Griffin (ankle) became the latest Jet to hit IR on Thursday. In a corresponding move to fill Griffin’s roster spot, the Jets activated offensive lineman Brent Qvale off injured reserve.

Le’Veon Bell returns to the field against the Ravens after a bout with the flu that kept him out of action against the Dolphins, but Bilal Powell is out with an ankle injury and the flu. That leaves Bell and Ty Montgomery to shoulder the load for New York out of the backfield.

The Jets will also have Henry Anderson, Kelvin Beachum, Matthias Farley, Steve McLendon, Nathan Shepherd and Montgomery suited up in Week 15 despite all six players being listed as questionable leading up to the game. Whether or not any of the six can make an impact remains to be seen, but they are all required to dress New York is required to have a minimum of 46 players suited up.

As for the Ravens, they’ll be without starting offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley, who sits due to a concussion. Tight end Mark Andrews and safety Andrew Levine will all play for Baltimore despite being listed as questionable entering Thursday.

Jets injury report: Ryan Griffin, Brian Poole among 4 ruled out vs. Ravens

The Jets have officially ruled out four players for Thursday’s game, while four others are listed as doubtful.

The Jets will go into their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Baltimore Ravens with few healthy bodies.

New York has ruled out TE Ryan Griffin (ankle), CB Brian Poole (concussion), OT Chuma Edoga (knee) and RB Bilal Powell (ankle/illness).

In addition, S Jamal Adams (ankle), DL Quinenn Williams (neck), CB Arthur Maulet (calf) and WR Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) are all listed as doubtful and unlikely to play. DL Henry Anderson (shoulder), OT Kelvin Beachum (ankles), S Matthias Farley (ankle), DL Steve McLendon (knee/hip), RB Ty Montgomery (foot/hip) and DL Nathan Shepherd (ankle) are all questionable but will need to suit up because the Jets already likely have eight players who will not be able to play.

The Jets need to dress 46 of 53 players for Thursday’s contest. They can make seven players inactive, but eight will be out injured. It is likely that New York will have to elevate a player from its practice squad before Thursday night.

The Jets already placed rookie UDFA CB Kyron Brown (quad) on injured reserve this week and elevated UDFA WR Jeff Smith from the practice squad with Thomas ailing.

TE Daniel Brown, WR Vyncint Smith and Shepherd must step into bigger roles on Thursday, while Le’Veon Bell will have to return from his bout with the flu and make an immediate impact. With Powell out and Montgomery banged up, it will most likely be Bell with some Josh Adams sprinkled in.

As far as Baltimore, LB Chris Beard (concussion) is out, while OT Ronnie Stanley (concussion) is doubtful. In addition, QB Lamar Jackson (quad), Mark Andrews (knee), S Anthony Levine Sr. (ankle) and DE Jihad Ward (elbow) are all listed as questionable but expected to play.

Jets Injury Report: Kyron Brown to IR, many others banged up after Week 14

Jets injury report following New York’s Week 14 win over the Miami Dolphins.

To say Week 14 took a toll on the Jets would be a massive understatement.

Not only did New York lose rookie cornerback Kyron Brown for the season to a quad injury, but numerous other key contributors emerged from Gang Green’s triumph over the Dolphins banged up.

Sam Darnold had his throwing hand stepped on and sustained some bruises, but is fine and his status for New York’s Thursday night matchup with the Baltimore Ravens is not in jeopardy. Ryan Griffin, Bilal Powell, Demaryius Thomas and Quinnen Williams are also dealing with injuries that would’ve kept them out of practice on Monday if the Jets practiced according to Adam Gase. Powell is dealing with an ankle, while Thomas remained bothered by his hamstring and knee.

As for Jamal Adams and Le’Veon Bell, both remain uncertain to play on Thursday night. Bell is trending in the direction, as he is no longer contagious with the flu.

“[He’s] pretty close to 100%,” Gase said of New York’s starting running back.

With Powell banged up, Bell’s status for Week 15 becomes crucial to the Jets’ offensive gameplan. If both Bell and Powell cannot play on Thursday night, New York will be left with only Ty Montgomery in the backfield.

As for Adams, he remains questionable to suit up against the Ravens. Adams missed the first game of his NFL career against the Dolphins on Sunday with an ankle injury.

“I know where Jamal stands by it,” Gase said. “We have to do the right thing by him.”

Robby Anderson, Sam Darnold among Jets’ Studs & Duds in win over Dolphins

The Jets won their fifth game of the season in a battle of field goals to earn their first AFC East win of the season.

The Jets barely squeaked out a victory over the Dolphins Sunday, winning 22-21.

The Dolphins’ lackluster red zone offense kept the Jets in the game, despite New York giving Miami every opportunity to win. Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders went 7-8 on field goals, but it was Sam Ficken who won the game for the Jets with a 44-yard field goal as time expired.

The Jets’ fifth win of the season was also Adam Gase’s first against his former team.

Mistakes were made on the final drive, but a reviewed defensive pass interference call gave the Jets a gift from above. Here are the best and worst players from the Jets’ last-second win.

Stud: RB Bilal Powell

(Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports)

Bilal Powell was a workhorse out of the backfield Sunday.

Powell had 19 carries for 74 yards. That’s more in a single game than Le’Veon Bell had in any of his starts (70). A staggering statistic, this is the first time a Jets running back has run for over 70 yards this season.

Broncos vs. Texans series history: Denver holds slight edge

The Denver Broncos will face the Houston Texans in Week 14. Here’s a look back at the series history between the two teams.

The Denver Broncos (4-8) will meet the Houston Texans (8-4) in Week 14. It will be just the eighth time the teams have played in the regular season.

The Texans entered the league as an expansion team in 2002. As a result, it’s a team that the Broncos have only faced a handful of times. In fact, out of the 31 other teams in the league, the only team the Broncos have seen less is the Carolina Panthers.

The Broncos hold a slight 4-3 edge in the all-time series. Another interesting note between these two teams is that the Texans have never taken two in a row from the Broncos. However, with a win over the Broncos last November, the Texans will have a chance to change that on Sunday.

Last meeting: November 4, 2018: Texans 19, Broncos 17

There are a few memorable things from this game, but most of them surround three people — Brandon McManus, Demaryius Thomas and Vance Joseph.

This was the first game for Thomas after the Broncos traded him just prior to the league’s trade deadline. His first game came against his former team. He caught three passes for 61 yards on the day.

For McManus, he was made the scapegoat for the loss as he missed two field goals, including a 51-yard attempt as time expired. That kick would have won the game.

His first miss was blamed more on Joseph than on him. With 18 seconds left in the first half and facing a 4th-and-9 from the Houston 44-yard line, Joseph decided to send McManus out for a 62-yard field goal. He missed. That then gave the Texans great field position to work with and after two quick completions by Deshaun Watson, Ka’imi Fairbairn booted a 46-yard field goal to end the first half.

Instead of going into the half down three, the Broncos went in down six and that proved to be the difference in the game. It seemed that Joseph’s coaching seat became boiling hot following this loss.

It was a game that revolved around the kicking game. In addition to that series prior to halftime, Fairbairn made a 37-yard kick with less than a minute to play to put the Texans up by two points just prior to the miss by McManus.

Kickoff for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. MT and the contest will air on CBS. Kevin Harlan and Rich Gannon will call the action.

Lack of energy, missed opportunities among takeaways from Jets’ loss to Bengals

Jets Wire breaks down the Jets’ Week 13 loss to the Bengals with four takeaways from the action.

The same old Jets are back.

Granted an ideal opportunity to make it four wins in a row against the winless Bengals, New York looked like the team that started the season 1-7 and gave Cincinnatti its first win of the season by a final score of 22-6 thanks to what was essentially a no-show performance.

The Jets can now say goodbye to any hope for a miraculous postseason push. They can also say goodbye to the momentum that seemingly had them trending in the right direction. Before putting this ugly loss in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look back at the action with four takeaways.

Typical Jets

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Leave it to the Jets to lay an egg against the worst team in football after winning three games in a row.

New York had a prime opportunity to extend its winning streak to four against a winless Bengals squad, but fell flat on its face in Cincinnati. Maybe it was the dreary weather and nearly empty stadium that threw the Jets off. Maybe they simply got caught flat-footed by underestimating the Bengals and assuming they would lie down for them.

Either way, there’s no denying that Sunday’s performance was the latest example of the same old Jets coming out to play.

Jets vs. Raiders inactives: No surprises for New York in Week 12

Jets vs. Raiders inactives report for Week 12.

The Jets are relatively healthy heading into their Week 12 showdown with the Oakland Raiders.

No surprises popped up on New York’s inactives report on Sunday, as offensive linemen Chuma Edoga and Kelvin Beachum will suit up as expected despite being listed as questionable throughout the week. The same applies to Henry Anderson, Brandon Copeland, Neville Hewitt, Alex Lewis, Steve McLendon and Demaryius Thomas.

Darryl Roberts, Mathias Farley, Paul Worrilow and C.J. Mosley are all out as expected.

Sunday marks Roberts’ third consecutive missed game while, special teams ace Farley misses his first of the season and Worrilow remains on the sideline as he works his way back into shape.

As for the Raiders, they’ll be without starting cornerback/safety hybrid Lamarcus Joyner. Joyner made the trip to New York with the team, but will ultimately miss his second consecutive game due to a hamstring injury. Oakland is also without offensive lineman David Sharpe, who was ruled out early in the week with a calf injury.
