D.J. Reader, who drew interest from Broncos, agrees to sign with Bengals

Former Texans defensive lineman D.J. Reader has agreed to sign with the Bengals.

Former Houston Texans defensive lineman D.J. Reader has agreed to sign a four-year, $53 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

The Denver Broncos were interested in Reader but his $13.25 million-per-year average might have been too costly for general manager John Elway. Seattle Seahawks pending free agent defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson remains an option for Denver.

Reader (6-3, 347 pounds) was selected by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Clemson. He totaled 72 tackles — including nine tackles for losses — and four sacks during his four years with the Tigers.

In Houston, Reader served mostly as a rotational defensive lineman as a rookie, totaling 22 tackles and one sack. He emerged as a full-time starter in 2017 and recorded 47 tackles and one sack.

Last season, Reader had a career year with 52 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He’s a nose tackle who is tasked with clogging up the middle of the field.

Reader has totaled 154 tackles and 6.5 sacks over the last four seasons.

Broncos announce 2 roster moves

The Broncos parted ways with two defenders on Thursday.

The Denver Broncos confirmed on Thursday evening that defensive lineman Billy Winn was released and the team announced that cornerback Horace Richardson was waived.

Winn (6-4, 300 pounds) had two different stints in Denver and spent the entire 2017 and 2019 seasons on injured reserve after sitting out the 2018 season. With multiple season-ending injuries, he might have a hard time continuing his career.

Because he is a veteran, Winn is not subject to the NFL’s waiver wire. He is now a free agent.

Richardson (6-0, 190 pounds) spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit  Lions and Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Broncos in 2018. He was competing for a rotational spot in the secondary and a special teams role last summer before suffering a season-ending back injury.

After spending all of last season on injured reserve, Richardson will now enter the league’s waiver wire. If he goes unclaimed, Richardson will become an unrestricted free agent and will be able to sign with any team.

WATCH: Malcolm Roach bench press reps at NFL Combine

Former Texas defensive lineman Malcolm Roach is doing everything he can to improve his draft stock at the NFL Combine.

He isn’t being talked about enough.

Defensive lineman Malcolm Roach is an underrated draft prospect out of Texas. Much of the hype surrounds safety Brandon Jones and receivers Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson, but Roach continues to make his case to be put on the radar.

Although former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando’s scheme did not fit to Roach’s strengths, it’s clear he has high potential to make an impact in the National Football League.

Roach received an invite to the 2020 NFL Combine, where he completed 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Roach was a four-year defensive lineman at Texas who played in 42 career games with 18 starts. He spent time at both defensive end and linebacker and was one of six Longhorns elected by teammates as a team captain for the 2019 season.

To receive more exposure with NFL scouts and executives, Roach competed in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl this past January. He was voted to the All-Practice team and was a team captain.

Roach projects to be a defensive tackle at the next level.

Could Colts target DT Ross Blacklock on Day 2 of NFL Draft?

Colts have a few picks on Day 2.

Indianapolis Colts fans will hold their breath until the No. 13 pick in the NFL Draft this year. With a chance to put the franchise in a positive direction going forward, there are many routes Chris Ballard could choose to go. It should not be overshadowed, however, that Day 2 of the draft may be just as important a Day 1.

After a first round trade with Washington last year, the Colts are now in possession of the No. 34 pick to go along with their own No. 44 pick. This puts them in an interesting spot with two relatively early second-round picks and the chance to get some quality value picks. All of this will obviously depend on what the No. 13 pick looks like, but Ross Blacklock is a guy to keep your eye on in Day 2.

The defensive tackle out of TCU decided to forego his junior year in December and declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. Blacklock is 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 305 pounds, very impressive size for a defensive lineman. In fact, he lost almost 30 pounds heading into his junior year, which helped his speed and ability to get off the line. Not to mention, he might have one of the coolest names in the draft.

His redshirt freshman year in 2017, Blacklock racked up 27 total tackles and 2.0 sacks which earned him a Freshman All-American award as well as the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year. His 2018 season was lost due to an Achilles injury he suffered in training camp that offseason. Blacklock bounced back in 2019 though with 40 total tackles and 3.5 sacks which earned him First-Team All Big 12.

His tape is very impressive, but only starting one full season before declaring for the draft is somewhat of a red flag for many draft scouts. Teams look for experience from players coming out of college and that could be the reason why Blacklock is projected as a second round pick or even lower. This could be a concern for Ballard at 34 or 44.

If he were to continue to grow in Indy, Blacklock could be the missing piece in this Colts defensive line that struggled to provide pressure and stop the run many times last season. With no spots on the interior defensive line locked up heading into next season, Blacklock could have an immediate impact as well.

Blacklock is not a perfect prospect by any means, but he has the size and speed that scouts look for at the NFL level. His skill set projects to be better as a one-gap penetrator, which would fit well with the Colts.

He could be a great pick in the second round for Ballrd and company, but if they decide that defensive line is bigger need earlier in the draft, then there are certainly plenty of guys to choose from.
