Upcoming NFL offseason dates Saints fans should know in 2023

There’s a lot of ground to cover between the 2023 NFL draft, free agency, and more events for the offseason calendar. Upcoming dates Saints fans should know:

Super Bowl LVII is in the books, so all our attention is focusing on the New Orleans Saints offseason. And there’s a lot of ground to cover between the 2023 NFL draft, a busy free agency signing period, and more events for the offseason calendar. Saints fans will have their hands full keeping up with all the goings-on with their team as it searches for a new quarterback and a return to the playoffs amid a two-year postseason drought.

Here’s a quick reference for all of the dates to circle on your calendar as New Orleans gears up for another exciting season of football:

Payton Turner says he’s medically cleared for Saints training camp

Saints defensive end Payton Turner, the team’s 2021 first round pick, says he’s been medically cleared to participate in training camp:

This is big: Payton Turner announced Wednesday that he’s been medically cleared to participate in New Orleans Saints training camp, formally adding the team’s 2021 first round pick to the mix of players we’ll be rooting for later this summer. Saints rookies will report for work on July 19, with veteran players following them on July 26. Turner was one of several players recovering from surgery and receiving treatment at the team facility during minicamp practices in June.

Turner, 24, dealt with a lot of frustration as a rookie with a training camp elbow injury sidelining him to start the season and an unrelated shoulder issue ending his year in November. That required surgery and seven months of rehab, but now he’s back. Look for Turner to get a lot of snaps rushing off the right side behind Marcus Davenport in the rotation, but the Saints showed us they’re open to moving him around — 30% of his pass rush snaps came off the left side, where Cameron Jordan and Tanoh Kpassagnon typically line up.

With those four players and fourth-year pro Carl Granderson in the mix (plus former first round pick Taco Charlton signed for training camp), it’s looking like the Saints again run deep at defensive end. They just need enough players to stay healthy, and that’s what they hired Alabama sports science director Matt Rhea to accomplish.

And we’ve seen before that Turner is worth waiting on. He was a big bright spot in his rookie debut, making multiple big tackles for loss and bagging a sack right out of the gate. He struggled to keep up that momentum as time wore on and experienced NFL left tackles began to get the better of him, but he’s had plenty of time to heal up and study the tape. Let’s see if he can level up when the team regroups in just a few weeks.

NFL announces report dates for 2022 Saints training camp

Saints rookies will report for training camp on July 19, with veterans joining them on July 26. Dates to know for camp, preseason games, and roster cuts:

The NFL announced report dates for every team’s 2022 training camp on Thursday, with New Orleans Saints rookies scheduled to arrive on July 19 and veteran players to report on July 26. It isn’t immediately clear when practices will open to fans at the Saints’ training facility in Metairie, so stay tuned.

Let’s recap the offseason so far. Things are shaping up for an exciting summer under first-year head coach Dennis Allen. New Orleans made some splashy additions this offseason in free agency, signing hometown heroes Tyrann Mathieu and Jarvis Landry, before taking an aggressive approach to the 2022 NFL draft to land first-rounders Chris Olave and Trevor Penning. An ill-advised run at troubled $230 million man Deshaun Watson went nowhere, and now the team has put its efforts towards supporting Jameis Winston as its starting quarterback.

So now we know when we’ll be getting a good look at Winston, Olave, Penning, Landry, and Mathieu and all their teammates when the Saints regroup in late July. It’s the next step in a long march towards the start of the regular season — with the daily grind of training camp practices on the horizon, and a series of preseason games and tough roster cuts to follow. Week 1’s kickoff with the Atlanta Falcons will be here before we know it. Here’s some dates to mark on your calendar:

  • July 19: Saints rookies report for training camp
  • July 26: Saints veterans report for training camp
  • Aug. 13: Saints preseason game at Houston Texans
  • Aug. 16: Saints joint practice with Packers in Green Bay
  • Aug. 16: Deadline to reduce rosters from 90 to 85 players
  • Aug. 17: Saints joint practice with Packers in Green Bay
  • Aug. 19: Saints preseason game at Packers
  • Aug. 23: Deadline to reduce rosters from 85 to 80 players
  • Aug. 26: Saints preseason game vs. Los Angeles Chargers
  • Aug. 30: Deadline to reduce rosters from 80 to 53 players
  • Sep. 11: Saints season opener at Atlanta Falcons

LOOK: The New Orleans Saints’ 2022 schedule is here

Finally: the New Orleans Saints have announced their schedule for the 2022 season, including three prime-time kickoffs and an international game in London. Expectations are high for New Orleans despite a tumultuous offseason that saw Sean Payton step down as the team’s longtime head coach, replaced by Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen; now, the team is looking to improve on their 9-8 record from last year and get back to the postseason.

That’s easier said than done, especially considering the hurdles in front of the Saints. They’re scheduled for nine games with teams returning from the playoffs last season, and they won’t get a chance to rest during their bye week until Week 14. Plus, the year starts out with three NFC South rivalry matchups before a long road trip overseas. A rough start to Allen’s tenure could sink their season before it has a chance to get off the ground. Still, the Saints have built an experienced team that should compete each week. Here are the games on their 2022 schedule:

College pro day schedule for 2022 NFL offseason

#Chiefs scouts will hit the road today as the college pro day circuit begins. Here’s a look at the complete schedule so far:

Even with the return of the NFL Scouting Combine, there will be plenty for scouts to learn during the college pro day circuit ahead of the 2022 NFL draft.

Kansas City Chiefs scouts will travel to college campuses to watch the best athletes work out. They’ll give preference to schools that didn’t have key players in all-star games or at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. While the athletic testing doesn’t quite carry the same rigor of the combine, meaningful information that is used to assemble the final draft board is still gathered.

Pro days will take place throughout the month of March and continue into early April. All dates and times are subject to change at a given school’s discretion. Some schools haven’t yet decided on a time and date for their pro day, but we’ll keep this list up to date as that information is released.

Here’s a look at the schedule for the 2022 pro day circuit so far:

It’s starting to feel like summer. The New Orleans Saints announced this week that they will kick off their 2021 training camp on July 25 for rookies and players recovering from injuries, with veterans arriving by July 27. The first non-padded practice will be held on July 29, and fans can begin attending July 30.

There will be seven practice sessions open to the public, but free tickets must be reserved in advance (which you can register for online starting July 23, though season ticket holders and waiting list members get first priority on July 21 and 22, respectively). All practices will be held at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center in Metairie, La., beginning each day at 9:30 a.m. CT. Here are the dates when fans can attend:

  • Friday, July 30
  • Saturday, July 31
  • Thursday, Aug. 5
  • Friday, Aug. 6
  • Saturday, Aug. 7
  • Friday, Aug. 20
  • Saturday, Aug. 21

As All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan recently observed, it’s going to be a “fun and interesting” experience this year with the first real quarterback competition we’ve seen in the Sean Payton era dominating training camp storylines. But there will be dozens of players competing for jobs beyond Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston, so we’ll be sure to keep you in the know here at Saints Wire. If you’re interesting in going yourself, be sure to check the official attendance and parking policies at NewOrleansSaints.com.

NFL announces Seahawks offseason program and minicamp dates

The NFL has announced dates for the offseason programs and minicamps. The Seahawks opted not to appear in person for voluntary activities.

The National Football League has now announced the dates for the offseason activities following the 2021 NFL draft. The program is broken down into three phases per Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Phase One will take place from April 19-May 14, four weeks this year instead of two. Any activities must be limited to strength and conditioning, virtual meetings, and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two starts on May 17 and lasts just one week this offseason. The following is allowed per the NFL this year:

On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills, “perfect play” drills, drills and plays conducted with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, with each group permitted to align eleven or fewer players across from eleven or fewer players. Players on one side of the ball may execute a play, but players on the opposite side of the ball may not initiate contact with, or attempt to impede the progress of, players who are running the play. All such drills must be conducted at an acceptable walkthrough pace (i.e. Pro Bowl practice).

Phase Three will be conducted over four weeks, from May 24-June 18. The following activities are allowed in the final phase.

Beginning in Phase Three, clubs may conduct in-person meetings and classroom instruction subject to COVID-19 testing cadence, tracking, facility access and other protocols.  During Phase Three, teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Finally, each club is allowed to hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players – which must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program – and one rookie minicamp, held over either the first or second weekend following the draft.

Here are the offseason program dates for the Seahawks:

Rookie Minicamp: May 14-16

OTA Workouts: May 24, May 26-27, June 1, June 3-4, June 7-10

Mandatory Minicamp: June 15-17

In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Seattle’s players have already announced they won’t be participating in in-person, voluntary activities.

What happens if a CFB Playoff game is cancelled? A plan is announced

The COVID pandemic has hindered a lot of original plans, but a backup should always be in order. The College Football PLayoff announced p…

A year like 2020 has taught us many things, one of the most important being: always have a backup plan.

The ongoing COVID pandemic has impacted nearly every sport, conference, program or individual. Many games throughout the 2020 college football season had either been cancelled or postponed and rescheduled.

For example, Ohio State only managed to play five regular season games due to constant issues with in-program outbreaks or an opponent dealing with the virus.

With bowl season upon the college football community, all eyes turn toward the final four teams and their bowl games, AKA Semi-Finals for the 2020-2021 National Championship.

Though it may seem unnecessary with there only being two games to play, the College Football Playoff organization has come up with a plan in case any games are cancelled.

The plan consists of three dates, ideal for any COVID-related issues teams may face prior to the originally scheduled game, allowing enough time for testing and any arrangements that need to be made.
