The 49ers on Tuesday announced a small change to their 90-man roster. They signed veteran defensive lineman Darryl Johnson and released undrafted rookie wide receiver Shae Wyatt.

Johnson, a seventh-round pick of the Bills in 2019, has played in 38 games across his four-year career. He spent two years with the Bills, one with the Panthers, and one with Seattle. He has 21 tackles and 2.0 sacks in his four seasons. Last year he played in four games with his lone career start for the Seahawks and posted three tackles.

Wyatt spent the final two seasons of his college career at Tulane. In those two years he hauled in 68 balls for 1,068 yards and 10 touchdowns. His release leaves the 49ers with 11 receivers on their offseason roster. Isaiah Winstead is the only remaining undrafted rookie among the WRs.

Giants host five veterans on tryout basis at rookie minicamp

The New York Giants invited five veterans to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, including the brother of ex-Giant Paul Parkins.

The New York Giants are conducting rookie minicamp this weekend at their practice facility in East Rutherford. There are five veterans in the mix of draftees, UDFAs, invitees, and walk-ons.

Quarterback Bryce Perkins, a former Virginia star who spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent the first two seasons on the bench and did not take a snap until last year when he played in five games, making one start. He is the brother of former Giants running back Paul Perkins.

Cornerbacks Nigel Warrior and Iman Marshall are also in camp. They both have ties to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

Warrior is the son of former All-Pro cornerback Dale Carter. He did not play in 2022 but has spent time with Baltimore and Seattle over the two previous seasons.

Marshall was a fourth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2019. He most recently played with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL in 2022.

Outside linebackers Jonathan Kongbo and Darryl Johnson have been brought in for a tryout as well. Kongbo has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

Seahawks elevate two players from practice squad, place one on IR

Here is a quick run-down of their Week 5 moves before we get into today’s game.

The Seattle Seahawks announced a couple of roster moves on Saturday in preparation for today’s matchup with the Saints. They also placed one of their starting defenders on the injured reserve list earlier this week.

Here is a quick run-down of their Week 5 moves before we get into today’s game.

Seahawks place linebacker Darryl Johnson on injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks announced one roster move Friday, linebacker Darryl Johnson has been placed on the injured reserve with a foot injury.

The Seattle Seahawks announced one roster move on Friday afternoon before heading off to New Orleans to face the Saints, linebacker Darryl Johnson has been placed on the injured reserve.

Johnson left the Seahawks’ Week-4 matchup in Detroit with a foot injury that coach Pete Carroll had worried was somewhat significant. The hope is Johnson can return to the lineup at some point this season, but he’ll have to miss the mandatory four games before he can be activated back to the 53-man roster.

Seattle originally claimed Johnson off waivers via the Panthers ahead of the season and he was able to play himself into a starting role against the Lions.

No corresponding roster move was announced, leaving an open spot on the Seahawks’ 53-man squad.

Seahawks LB Darryl Johnson suffered ‘significant’ foot injury in Detroit

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Darryl Johnson suffered a “somewhat significant” foot injury in Detroit Week 4 and could be out for some time.

The Seattle Seahawks were fortunate in the injury department Sunday in Detroit, with only one player leaving the matchup unable to return – linebacker Darryl Johnson.

“Yeah, he hurt his foot and he has an injury that is going to take a while,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters during his Monday press conference. “I don’t know specifically. I do think it’s a stress fracture kind of thing that he is dealing with. That’s somewhat of a significant injury.”

The Seahawks claimed Johnson off waivers last month with Shelby Harris out and he earned himself a starting nod against the Lions.

“Unfortunately, I was really fired up about him in part of our plans,” Carroll continued. “He’s big, strong, versatile, active, smart. You know really one of our guys, so I’m really disappointed that he got banged up.

“He was the one guy that really got hurt in this game.”

Carroll is hopeful Johnson will be able to return at some point this season.

Seahawks awarded two players off waivers after cut-down day

The Seahawks have been awarded two players off waivers, according to a report by Brady Henderson at ESPN.

The Seahawks have been awarded two players off waivers, according to a report by Brady Henderson at ESPN.

Defensive back Isaiah Dunn (six-foot, 193 pounds) was claimed from the Jets. He played his college ball at Oregon State and went undrafted. He played 12 games with the Jets last season, totaling eight tackles and two pass breakups.

Seattle also claimed defenive end Darryl Johnson (6-foot-6, 250 pounds) from the Panthers. He was picked in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Bills and played 31 games in Buffalo, but earning no starts. Last season he appeared in three games with Carolina, playing a total of 50 snaps.

Update:

To make room for these two new faces on the 53-man roster, the Seahawks have waived outside linebacker Joshua Onujiogu and placed cornerback John Reid on the injured reserve list. Reid will have to miss at least the first four weeks of the regular season.

2 Panthers cuts find new homes with Seahawks, Dolphins

Darryl Johnson and Kalon Barnes are now officially former Panthers, as the two have stuck on elsewhere.

The Carolina Panthers won’t be getting their choice of practice squad players from the pool of the 25 men they cut yesterday.

Per the league’s transaction wire, 33 players were claimed off waivers by teams on Wednesday. And just one of those players came from Carolina—defensive end Darryl Johnson.

Johnson is now headed over to the Seattle Seahawks, the old home of current Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer. Apparently, the Seahawks were just about in line with Fitterer—who traded for Johnson exactly one year and one day ago.

The 6-foot-6, 262-pounder played in three games for the team in 2021. He registered a single tackle over those appearances.

Also on the way out is cornerback Kalon Barnes, who will—per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network—be signing on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. He, like Johnson, was waived on Tuesday.

Barnes was a seventh-round pick by the Panthers this past spring. He recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time at the 2022 combine, clocking in at 4.23 seconds.

Panthers waive DE Darryl Johnson

Exactly a year to the day the Panthers traded for him, DE Darryl Johnson was waived by the team.

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer once famously said that he’d be “in on every deal.” And while that’s a beautiful sentiment, it doesn’t mean that every deal is necessarily going to be a great one.

Take defensive end Darryl Johnson, for instance, who the team waived on Tuesday morning. Exactly one year ago, the Panthers acquired the 6-foot-6, 262-pounder from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round selection.

And now, he might be gone.

Johnson appeared in three games for Carolina in 2021. He recorded one tackle.

The Panthers had scooped up Johnson last summer, presumably, with the hopes of using him as a versatile piece on both defense and special teams. Fitterer and his staff viewed Johnson as a potential core special teamer and a defender who could come off the edge and provide the unit with some linebacker depth.

Being that he was waived, however, Johnson can return to the team’s practice squad if he’s not claimed.

Panthers Week 1 inactives: New acquisitions out vs. Jets

We knew WR Shi Smith would be out for the opener against the Jets. What other Panthers will be joining him on the sideline today?

The Carolina Panthers released their list of inactive players an hour and a half ahead of kickoff against the New York Jets on Sunday. Here’s the group:

WR Shi Smith (shoulder injury)
G Michael Jordan (healthy)
DE Darryl Johnson (healthy)
DT Phil Hoskins (healthy)
G Deonte Brown (healthy)
LB Clay Johnston (healthy)

Smith’s status, of course, should come as no shock. The rookie receiver was already deemed out for this one as he nurses a shoulder injury.

Taking his spot, unofficially, will be wideout Alex Erickson. Erickson was just signed to and elevated from the practice squad to undertake punt return duties for the opener.

Jordan and Johnson, who were both acquired over the last two weeks, are also down.

Perhaps the most surprising inactive is the rookie Brown. With starting right guard John Miller out after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, some extra offensive line depth could’ve been useful, especially for a less-than-stellar unit. Nonetheless, Dennis Daley takes the starting nod for Miller.

Here’s who the Jets have out for the contest:

RB Josh Adams
RB La’Mical Perine
LB Quincy Williams
CB Jason Pinnock
DL Jonathan Marshall
WR Keelan Cole
