2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: TE Darnell Washington, Georgia

Freakish size and movement skills make Washington an intriguing prospect.

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Darnell Washington sports an intimidating frame and comes with three years of experience in an elite program. Following his junior season, he declared for the 2023 NFL Draft as one of the more intriguing prospects, regardless of position.

Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 264 pounds
40 time: 4.64 seconds

Washington’s was a top-25 prep recruit and started seven games as a true freshman for the 2020 Bulldogs. He missed the opening four games of the next season but started all but one game in 2022 for the back-to-back FBS champs. Washington recorded personal bests for receptions, yards and touchdowns as a junior, earning second-team All-SEC recognition while splitting time with move tight end Brock Bowers.

Table: Darnell Washington stats (2020-22)

Year School Class G Receiving Rushing
Rec Yds Avg TD Att Yds Avg TD
*2020 Georgia Fr 4 7 166 23.7 0 0.0 0 0
*2021 Georgia So 8 10 154 15.4 1 0.0 0 0
*2022 Georgia Jr 15 28 454 16.2 2 0.0 0 0

*includes postseason/bowl games (stats from Sports Reference)

Pros

  • Rare size and adequate speed — his 4.64-second 40 time ranks in the 80th percentile for all tight ends at the combine, regardless of physical stature
  • Quite athletic for his size — multiple examples on tape of him hurdling defenders, contorting his body for the tough catch, and outrunning linebackers
  • Strong blocker both in-line and down the field — tremendous power at the point of attack to set the edge or rag-doll smaller defenders
  • Difficult to bring down and knock off-balance with an attempted body tackle
  • Excellent mismatch for 50/50 balls, especially in the red zone
  • Huge catch radius (83 3/4 inches) and naturally soft hands — which happen to be massive at 11 inches
  • Impressive focus and concentration when looking in passes in tight quarters
  • Unrealized potential in the passing game
  • Three-down player

[lawrence-related id=475916]

Cons

  • While fairly fast for his build, cornerbacks will run him down in the open field
  • Lacks technique in his footwork both as a blocker and while running patterns — nearly all of the criticisms are fixable and nuanced
  • Wasn’t particularly productive in college, though he was often overshadowed by Bowers the last two years
  • System-based personnel grouping dependency could limit his availability

Fantasy football outlook

Washington profiles as a Round 2 selection but could climb into the opening stanza if a team is enamored with his potential. In the right system, he could be a three-down tight end and a starter early in his career, primarily due to his blocking skills. He’ll fit either a zone- or power-blocking scheme, though Washington would be served well in a TE-heavy design that tends to utilize the position as an extension of the offensive line.

Based on that train of thought, Detroit is an interesting landing spot with Dan Campbell having been a similar player whose team has a need. Denver, Cincinnati, Green Bay and the Los Angeles Chargers are strong contenders for his services.

While Washington could have a lengthy and respectable career, there’s a reasonable chance we’ll never enjoy his offerings as a weekly fantasy starter. Washington will require a steady dose of red-zone targets to off-set what projects to be a lack of considerable volume from week to week. Marcedes Lewis is an easy comp, and there’s some Benjamin Watson in his game, even though Washington has four inches on the retired pro. Both had quality careers in their own right but lacked a consistent fantasy punch.

It didn’t take long for No. 2 Georgia to find the endzone at Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs now lead 7-0 early in the first quarter thanks to this touchdown rush from freshman tight end Brock Bowers.

UGA’s stout defense forced a three-and-out and quarterback J.T. Daniels led a strategic drive for a score on the first possession.

There’s plenty of football left to be played in Nashville. The game is live now on SEC Network.

What Vanderbilt media is saying about Georgia

It’s No. 2 Georgia versus Vanderbilt this Saturday. Here’s what Vandy’s media is saying about the Bulldogs.

No. 2 Georgia (3-0) travels to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt (1-2) this Saturday at noon.

The Bulldogs are coming off of a 40-13 win over South Carolina in the SEC opener and the Commodores return home after a 41-23 loss to Stanford.

Vanderbilt, under first-year head coach Clark Lea, has a tall task ahead in trying to contain Georgia’s high-powered offense and score against UGA’s top-ranked defense.

Here’s what Vanderbilt media is saying about Georgia ahead of kickoff:

Georgia HC Kirby Smart gives injury updates for Darnell Washington and Tykee Smith

When will TE Darnell Washington and DB Tykee Smith be back for Georgia? Kirby Smart gives an update here…

Georgia football has been without two of its most talented players since fall camp. Both tight end Darnell Washington and transfer defensive back Tykee Smith have been recovering from ankle surgeries the last five weeks.

“We haven’t ruled out this weekend,” Smart told reporters. “They were back running last week, weight-bearing, like running on their own. So we’ve thought all along that this would be the target, this week or next. But can’t say they’re going to be cleared for this game. I’ll find out a lot more today because they’re going to be able to run, do some exercises. Not necessarily be in their groups but they’re going to be running and accelerating on their own…They’re on 100 percent of their weight as of Thursday/Friday. We’re moving them forward and we’ll see where they are today.”

Smart added that both Bulldogs targeted this week’s matchup with Vanderbilt as the return date.

The fact that Washington and Smith are progressing to the point where they are running and cutting is great news for the Bulldogs, who have been riddled with injuries early on.

Star receiver George Pickens is still working back from an ACL tear in the spring, but the media caught a glimpse of the junior straight-line running and catching passes in practice on Monday. Smart said wideout Dominick Blaylock was almost back to 100% from an ACL tear until he tweaked his hamstring, signaling it will be sometime before he’s ready for gameplay.

It’s not like UGA doesn’t have guys who can step in and make plays, though, Adonai Mitchell was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his play against South Carolina, racking up four catches for 77 yards and his first career touchdown.

On defense, other than a few chunk plays versus the Gamecocks, UGA’s young secondary has played well without Smith, the top returning defensive back in college football, according to Pro Football Focus.

The addition of Washington and Smith – whenever it may be – can only be a boost to the No. 2 team in the land.

Georgia HC Kirby Smart talks fall camp injuries: ‘Every one of them are day-to-day’

Smart spoke on Georgia football’s mounting injuries after UGA’s scrimmage on Saturday.

Georgia football has had a recent string of bad luck when it comes to injuries. Multiple key players have gone down with different issues during fall camp. And with just 12 days until the top-5 clash with Clemson, the Bulldogs are hoping for speedy recoveries.

Here’s an updated look at UGA’s injury report:

  • TE Darnell Washington (foot)
  • DB Tykee Smith (foot/ankle)

Smith and Washington both underwent surgeries to repair foot injuries last week. The time table is reportedly three to four weeks, however, coach Smart says the guys are day-to-day.

  • C Warren Ericson (hand)

Ericson has returned to practice in a limited role and is expected to go versus Clemson.

  • ILB Quay Walker (unknown)

Walker has been a limited participant in both of Georgia’s fall scrimmages but is expected to be available in Charlotte.

  • CB Jalen Kimber (shoulder)
  • WR Arik Gilbert (personal)
  • TE John FitzPatrick (foot)

Fitzpatrick has missed both scrimmages but has been able to condition and is expected to be available versus the Tigers.

  • OL Owen Condon (Unknown)
  • WR Dominick Blaylock (ACL)

Blaylock has been participating in non-contact drills but has yet to be fully cleared for practice or gameplay.

  • WR George Pickens (ACL)

Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart spoke on the team’s injuries and the status of Blaylock, Gilbert and Fitzpatrick after Georgia’s scrimmage on Saturday.

“We don’t have an injury where there are guys out for a long amount of time,” Smart said. “We are hopeful to get all of those guys back. I mean every one of them is day-to-day. Each one is a different situation but I expect to be full tilt when Clemson comes. We had more guys healthy today than we had last scrimmage and we are in good position.”

Smart is optimistic about the team’s health in spite of a long list of banged-up Dawgs, which should give UGA fans a bit of relief. Still, Georgia will want every one of its contributors ready to go for one of the biggest games of the college football season.

Check back to UGA Wire next week to get the official injury report for week 1.

Watch the former 5-star recruit’s highlight tape here!

5-star Dessert Pines recruit Darnell Washington signed with Georgia as the No. 2 athlete, the No. 1 player in Nevada and the No. 23 overall recruit in the Bulldogs’ No. 1 class of 2020.

At 6-foot-7 260 pounds, Washington is already a miss match for opposing defenders.

The Under Armor All-American will wear No. 0 for the Bulldogs, which should make for a great target for Georgia quarterbacks when the Bulldogs kick off versus Arkansas on Sept 26.

Washington could be an absolute monster for Georgia, and with the departure of tight ends Eli Wolfe and Charlie Woerner, the Bulldogs will need to find production in the middle of the field.

5-star Georgia signee Darnell Washington recruits 2021 top TE Brock Bowers to UGA

5-star Georgia football TE Darnell Washington makes effort in recruiting top 2021 TE Brock Bowers to UGA.

The efforts of current Georgia players, signees and commits in recruiting some of the top players in the country have not gone unnoticed.

These current and future Bulldogs have been virtually recruiting the America’s top high school prospects to come join them at UGA. This all started with 5-star quarterback commit Brock Vandagriff Tweeting at recruits with their picture in a Dawgs jersey.

5-star UGA tight end commit Darnell Washington, who signed as a member of Georgia’s 2020 class, is joining in on the fun, replying to 4-star 2021 tight end and heavy Dawgs prospect Brock Bowers via Twitter.

Washington replied to Bowers’ tweet of an old practice video of him running through tackles to open grass.

“Looks like a UGA DAWG to me,” Washington said.

Bowers, the Napa, California native, is listed as the No. 3 tight end in the 2021 class, according to 247Sports.

Georgia looks to be the leader for Bowers, who has a top eight of Cal, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, UCLA and Washington.

New additions should open up the Georgia football passing game

With the addition of an elite tight end recruit and a grad transfer, UGA football improves on offense.

The University of Georgia Bulldogs have the top recruiting class in the whole nation as of noon on National Signing Day. In the Early Signing Period, head coach Kirby Smart and his subordinate recruiters were already able to sign 19 key incoming high school recruits, including a run on top talent from out of state. None looms larger than 5-star Darnell Washington, the 6-7 tight end out of Las Vegas, considered one of the elite athletes at any position.

Under outgoing one-year offensive coordinator James Coley, the Bulldogs struggled to pass the ball to the middle of the football field, and at times had trouble converting on third downs. Thusly, the defense had to keep UGA in low-scoring games. With Air Raid expert Todd Monken taking over the play calling duties, and a couple other very experienced coaching minds added to the offensive think tank, scoring should increase in 2020.

The spotlight shines brightest on Wake Forest grad transfer Jamie Newman, the presumed starter under center in Athens. But also keep an eye out for FSU grad transfer Tre’ McKitty (6-5), another tall tight end weapon.

Newman’s dual-threat arsenal includes his ability to run the football, which will draw defensive attention. The plan seems to be for Monken to open up the passing offense. Georgia loses stud runner D’Andre Swift to the NFL along with four offensive line starters, but the middle of the football field should be relatively open for tight ends to roam free and move the chains.
