Giants’ Daniel Bellinger trying to earn trust of coaches, teammates

New York Giants rookie TE Daniel Bellinger says his early camp focus is earning the trust of his coaches and teammates.

The New York Giants released the first draft of their 2022 depth chart on Monday and to no one’s surprise rookie Daniel Bellinger was listed as the starting tight end.

Bellinger, a fourth-round pick out of San Diego State, comes highly touted and has been running with the starters at training camp this month.

“It’s been exciting, I just do what my coach tells me to do,” Bellinger told reporters on Monday on his experience thus far. “I go out there and just try to do what he tells me to do and try and compete. Again, just earn trust from not just my position coach but, Daniel Jones, coach Dabs, and really just try to do what they tell me to do and earn trust from them.”

Bellinger is considered a full-service tight end, one who can block as well as make plays in the passing game. He played in a pro-style offense at SDSU under head coach Brady Hoke and is fitting in well here with the Giants.

“Just the speed, trying to read defenses. Just learning how different defenses work and of course just learning our system,” Bellinger said when asked about the adjustments he’s making. “Just a lot more motions and stuff like that, before I’d just have to know my job like the Y and F positions, but now it’s critical that I know everybody’s job, the route concept, and the whole play and not just my route.”

After a small injury hiccup at the start of camp, Bellinger is going full throttle and the Giants are relying on him to catch on quickly.  At SDSU, he was more of a blocker than a receiver. He hopes to change that.

“I’m pretty confident that I can show that and of course it’s whatever they want me to do. If they want me to go out there and catch a pass I will, if they want me to put my hand in the dirt to block, I’ll do that as well,” he said.

Giants release unofficial depth chart: 7 takeaways

The New York Giants have released their unofficial depth chart and here are seven notable takeaways.

The New York Giants released their unofficial depth chart ahead of Thursday’s preseason game against the New England Patriots.

It’s important to note that these early-preseason depth charts mean very little. They’re more about giving fans a structure and information so that they’re able to follow along throughout the course of the game.

Still, they do provide a slight indication into who is leading what training camp battle. And while they are obviously subject to change, they generate quite a bit of attention.

Here are seven quick takeaways from the Giants’ unofficial depth chart.

Fantasy football training camp roundup: July 24-28

A spin around all of the fantasy football buzz as training camps get underway.

Now that all teams have reported to training camps across the NFL, here’s a spin around the league for a look at the most notable fantasy football news as of Thursday, July 28.

Giants training camp: 10 takeaways from Day 1

The first New York Giants training camp practice of 2022 is in the books, so here are 10 quick takeaways.

The New York Giants took the field for their first practice of training camp on Wednesday and did so in front of fans for the first time since 2019.

The sun was shining, the music was playing and the excitement of football was very much in the air. And that excitement grew throughout practice as the Giants seemed far more functional — especially offensively — than they were a year ago.

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll kicked things off with a combined press conference which shed the light on a number of topics.

Here are 10 things we learned from the pressers and practice.

Giants activate TE Daniel Bellinger from PUP list

New York Giants rookie TE Daniel Bellinger (calf) has passed his physical and been activated from the PUP list.

For the second day in a row, the New York Giants received some positive injury news.

Rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger, who was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list last week with a calf injury, has passed his physical. He has been subsequently removed from the PUP list.

Bellinger, who was selected in fourth round of April’s draft, had a strong spring and turned some heads during practice. He also attended George Kittle’s Tight End U and is the early favorite to start at tight end.

“This level is a lot more particular on the small details, whether it’s one-foot step, one kind of leverage on a route, compared to college,” Bellinger said on the Giants’ official podcast. “College wasn’t as particular on the small details because sometimes you’re just straight up better than the guy across from you. But at this level, everybody is good. More often than not, the guy across from you is going to be better. So, in order to beat him, you have to win with small details and the small technical things in that kind of aspect.”

Bellinger’s ability to block should make him a candidate to play all three downs. The Giants are seeking some stability at tight end after years of tumult and underperformance, and he could be the player who changes the narrative.

Giants place TE Daniel Bellinger on PUP list

The New York Giants have placed rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger (quad) on the physically unable to perform list.

New York Giants rookies reported for training camp this past Tuesday and already the team is now one short.

Rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger, who was taken in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft, has been placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with a quad injury.

Bellinger had been working out with quarterback Daniel Jones and several of his new teammates prior to reporting to camp. However, it’s unclear exactly when this injury occurred or how much time the rookie is expected to miss.

The Giants can activate Bellinger from PUP at any point between now and the start of the regular season. If he remains on PUP once Week 1 rolls around, Bellinger will be forced to sit out a minimum of four weeks.

Bellinger had an impressive spring, displaying good hands and an ability to block at a high level. He was projected to start over Ricky Seals-Jones, who now has a golden opportunity.

2022 Giants training camp preview: Tight ends

The New York Giants are thin at tight end which means there will be some key training camp battles and some tough cutdown day(s) decisions.

Last year, the New York Giants were stacked at tight end with Evan Engram, Kyle Rudolph and Kaden Smith. Things didn’t go so well for the trio as the Giants’ offense sputtered once again.

None of those players are on this year’s roster, a decision of the new front office. And a new offensive scheme will likely change the way Giant fans value the position going forward.

The Giants will have a new approach on offense under head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. The new tight ends coach is veteran offensive assistant Andy Bischoff.

Here is a quick preview of the unit heading into training camp.

Giants’ Daniel Bellinger heading toward ‘Kevin Boss-level’ development?

There’s a lot of hype surrounding New York Giants rookie TE Daniel Bellinger but is he headed for a Kevin Boss-like ceiling?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Back in June, New York Giants legend Eli Manning was asked to compile his “dream” team made up of former teammates. And while many of Manning’s picks were obvious, there was one major surprise.

Rather than picking Jeremy Shockey, Martellus Bennett or Evan Engram as his tight end, Manning went with the highly underrated Kevin Boss.

Manning’s praised Boss for his football IQ, understanding of the offense and his assignments, and his clutch ability — something that was on display during his time with the Giants.

We bring that up because during a recent roster breakdown, Dan Duggan of The Athletic attempted to temper some of the early expectations for Giants rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger. And in doing so, named Boss as a potential ceiling for Bellinger.

TE Daniel Bellinger: There was a surprising amount of hype surrounding Bellinger during the spring. It was notable to see the rookie fourth-round pick getting so many first-team reps, but expectations should be measured. Developing into a Kevin Boss-level tight end is a reasonable goal for Bellinger.

Statistically, a Boss-level ceiling would not be what the Giants want out of Bellinger. However, in terms of overall skill, game knowledge, willingness to be coached and sliding in as a role player, Boss is exactly what they’d want out of Bellinger.

Perhaps the early Bellinger hype is a bit too much, but his play throughout the spring deserves recognition. The rookie not only showcased his impressive blocking skills, he also proved there are other dimensions to his game. And short of an injury during training camp, Bellinger is likely to play an important offensive role for the Giants in 2022.

Giants sign TE Daniel Bellinger

Giants TE Daniel Bellinger signed his rookie contract.

The New York Giants have come to terms with tight end Daniel Bellinger, the No. 112 selection in the 2022 NFL draft out of San Diego State.

The signing leaves the Giants with just two of their 11 picks unsigned as training camp opens in a little over two weeks. Second round selection, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson from Kentucky and safety Dane Belton of Iowa, another fourth round selection, remain unsigned.

Bellinger, who stands 6-feet-5 and weighs 253 pounds, played in 43 games (starting 32) at SDSU. He had a total of 68 receptions for 771 yards -a 11.3-yard average – with five touchdowns. Bellinger impressed at the Giants’ minicamp in June and there ar hopes that he can be a key contributor as a rookie this season.

Terms of Bellinger’s deal were not disclosed.
