Which Ohio State football players earned their Buckeye leaves against Purdue

Which Buckeyes impressed you in their win over Purdue? #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] got some semblance of revenge against [autotag]Purdue[/autotag], as they went into Ross-Ade Stadium and throughly defeated the Boilermakers, 41-7.

The Buckeyes were on the game from the start, jumping out to a 20-0 halftime lead before taking the gas off the pedal midway through the third quarter. The starters did their job and paved the way for the backups to get valuable game experience.

It was a good game for Ohio State in multiple phases and like OSU does every week, more Buckeye leaves will be added to their helmets before they face Penn State next week. Find out which players earned their new decals according to our opinions below.

On3 ranks Ohio State as having one of best running back units in college football for 2023

Ohio State gets recognized as one of the best running back rooms in college football entering next season. #GoBucks

On3’s Jesse Simonton has started releasing position group rankings for next season this week. The rankings are meant to reflect not just the ten best players at the position, but also factor in the depth of the unit.

On Tuesday, Simonton ranked the Buckeyes as the fourth-best running back unit trailing only Michigan, Alabama, and Penn State.

After an injury-riddled season at running back last season, the Buckeyes come into next season with a lot of depth and options. If both are fully healthy, Treveyon Henderson and Miyan Williams will enter the season as first and second on the depth chart.

Henderson arrived at Ohio State with a lot of hype surrounding him as the top-ranked back in the 2021 class. He quickly showed he was worth the hype rushing for 1,248 yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman.

Unfortunately, last season he lacked explosiveness for much of the season as he was dealing with a foot injury throughout the season that kept him sidelined for five games.  If he’s able to stay at 100 percent throughout this season, he’ll get the most touches in this offense.

Williams also dealt with injuries last season including a lower leg injury that heavily hindered him in the Michigan and Georgia games.

He showed last season, however, that regardless of whether Henderson is healthy or not he’ll still get his fair share of carries. He was very efficient as a runner, breaking tackles at a high rate and leading the team with 14 rushing touchdowns.

Henderson and Williams will likely be 1-2 on the depth chart if healthy.  However, there are at least two more intriguing options that will compete for consistent touches in this offense and more solid depth pieces beyond that.

Evan Pryor is a former top 100 player and sixth-ranked running back in the 2021 class. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in fall camp last season and missed the whole year.  Pryor is an electrifying back and has the talent to get touches in this offense.

Dallan Hayden is another very good option at running back, stepping up numerous times last season when Henderson and Williams were dealing with injuries.

As a true freshman, Hayden ran for a total of 553 yards and five touchdowns on 111 carries. This included three games of over 100 rushing yards, with a 146-yard three-touchdown performance against Maryland.

Chip Trayanum is a transfer from Arizona State who originally intended to switch positions to linebacker. However, after some injuries at running back last season, he switched back.  He ended up getting some action as he had 14 carries for 83 yards in the Michigan game.  He presents a good depth option as a power back.

The remaining four running backs are Cayden Saunders, TC Caffey, Will Hartson, and Chase Brecht. They aren’t likely to get significant playing time but are solid depth options to have on the roster.

Ohio State running back Dallan Hayden responds to transfer rumors

Dallan Hayden says transfer rumors were “just crazy”. #GoBucks

Dallan Hayden was thrust into the spotlight quite a bit earlier than anyone expected. The Ohio State running back room had some unfortunate circumstances that moved the true freshman running back up the depth chart quickly. Evan Pryor tore an ACL, causing him to miss the entire season, and TryVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams battled injuries all season.

Hayden racked up more than 550 yards and five touchdowns on the season and had a breakout game against Maryland with 146 yards and three scores. Most felt good about Hayden’s chances to carry that momentum into the Michigan game as the OSU backfield was ailing. However, Hayden had only two carries in the loss to the Wolverines.

Rumors started to swirl that the talented back from Memphis, Tennessee, was getting courted by the home-state Volunteers. However, it seems the rumors were just that. Hayden was asked if transferring ever crossed his mind. Here’s what he told Patrick Murphy of Bucknuts.

“That was honestly a rumor. I’m not sure how that got out because it definitely didn’t come from anybody close to me or from me. So that was just crazy. That was definitely just a rumor.” – Dallan Hayden

The running back room should be loaded this year barring any more unforeseen setbacks. With a healthy Henderson and Williams, it’s hard to tell where Hayden will fall in the pecking order.

Either way, it sounds like the second-year back is willing to wait his turn and continue to compete in scarlet and gray.

Ranking Ohio State running backs by 247Sports composite recruiting ranking

Ranking Ohio State running backs by 247Sports composite recruiting ranking #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program has five running backs on scholarship and has the appearance of being super deep. Still, as any Buckeye fan knows, this unit struggled mightily with injuries last season, resulting in both a linebacker and wide receiver taking snaps at the position.

That linebacker we speak of was Chip Trayanum, who was a running back at Arizona State before coming to Columbus. He is named on the list below, but taking snaps in 2022 was not part of the plan. This unit received a significant boost when Miyan Williams announced he was returning to Ohio State, but hopes are high that some of these highly rated guys reach their potential in 2023.

In the following slides, we rank the scholarship running backs on the roster based on their 247Sports recruiting ranking.

5 Stars: The best and worst of Ohio State’s crushing loss to Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

A tough pill to swallow #GoBucks

This is going to be a long eight months plus until [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] gets back on the football field to get rid the bitter taste in our mouths.

Georgia mounted the biggest comeback in College Football Playoff history, winning the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, 42-41, in dramatic fashion.

It was a crushing blow for an Ohio State team that was told for a month that it back-doored its way in and didn’t deserve to be there. The Buckeyes didn’t win the game, but I think they still proved a lot even with a loss.

There were some good things (five stars) and bad (one star) during Saturday’s tough loss for to Buckeyes. We break it down.

Watch: Ohio State takes early lead as Stroud find Harrison in the end zone

The Buckeyes strike first #GoBucks

The Buckeyes got the ball first but didn’t do much as they were forced to punt the ball back to Georgia after just four offensive plays. The Bulldogs would then move the ball a bit, but a missed 47-yard field goal by [autotag]Jack Podlesny[/autotag] gave the ball back to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag].

The quick strike Buckeye offense then went to work. Quarterback [autotag]C.J. Stroud[/autotag] found [autotag]Marvin Harrison Jr.[/autotag] for a 24-yard gain on the first play. Stroud then found [autotag]Emeka Egbuka[/autotag] for a 13-yard gain followed by a 3-yard run by [autotag]Dallan Hayden[/autotag].

Stroud then found Harrison Jr. again, this time in the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown pass to give Ohio State an early 7-0 lead.

The Buckeyes captured some early momentum after not allowing Georgia to score and used it to score themselves. Expect more fireworks from both offenses during this contest.

Keys for Ohio State to defeat Georgia in the Peach Bowl

What are your keys for the Buckeyes? #GoBucks

The Buckeyes are underdogs and aren’t projected by many to have a chance against Georgia, last year’s [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] champion.

To say the Bulldogs are unbeatable, however, is false, even though they have not yet lost this season. They bring a 15-game winning streak and a 27-1 record over the last two seasons into this game.

It is not an easy task for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag], but that is why they play the game. For the Buckeyes to come away with a win and play for a national championship, they are going to have to play one of their most complete games of the year. There will be plenty of keys to getting a victory against Georgia and here are a few that stick out.

Continued thoughts about this Ohio State loss to Michigan

What has stayed in your minds Buckeye fans?

Games like these bother me, and they will continue to do so until the Buckeyes head to Ann Arbor the weekend of Thanksgiving next year. It’s an odd feeling, for the majority of my OSU fandom, we have dominated TTUN, with the exception of a few John Cooper years. Jim Tressell took over when I was a sophomore in Morrison Tower and it’s been smooth sailing against our rivals until the last two contests. At some point, these questions will be answered, but for now, these are the thoughts that haven’t left my mind since Saturday afternoon.

Dallan Hayden named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week

ICYMI – Congrats to freshman Dallan Hayden for this recognition from the Big Ten. He has to be a big part of the game plan for the Michigan game now, no? #GoBucks

We’ve got another sighting when it comes to an Ohio State football player being recognized by the Big Ten. Freshman running back Dallan Hayden was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday for his efforts against Maryland. He joined Penn State freshman running back Kaytron Allen with the honor.

Hayden didn’t start the game as option No. 1 in the backfield, but when TreVeyon Henderson appeared to be laboring with a nagging injury and not as effective, he was given a rest. And with Miyan Williams also unavailable for the game, the Buckeyes began to ride Hayden and it paid off.

The Memphis native carried the ball 27 times for 146 yards and three touchdowns, completely turning around Ohio State’s fortunes on the ground in the second half and acting as one of the key reasons why the Buckeyes were able to get out of Colleg Park with a 43-30 victory.

Hayden is starting to come into his own. Saturday makes the second-straight game he has gone over the century mark after rushing for 102 yards and a score against Indiana a week prior.

He now figures to be involved heavily in the game plan for the upcoming massive tilt with Michigan on Saturday.

Hayden is the ninth Buckeye to receive Big Ten honors so far in 2022.

Five things we think we learned from Ohio State’s close shave against Maryland

What did you take away from the Maryland game? Here are five things we think we learned after seeing all the action in College Park Saturday. #GoBucks

Are you still alive and kicking?

While we love to watch entertaining college football games, it’s not nearly as exhilarating when Ohio State is embattled in a closer-than-expected contest against a Big Ten team it probably should have handled in less dramatic fashion.

At the end of the day though, almost every top team in the country struggled in the penultimate week of the college football regular season in games that seemed to be bridges to bigger and better things. After all, Ohio State will host Michigan in the next installment of The Game this Saturday and there’s some trophy and confetti on the line. From there it could be a College Football Playoff appearance.

But back to the game against Maryland. The Buckeyes made the adjustments at halftime and started shoveling the ball to running back Dallan Hayden on the way to a come-from-behind gut-check type of victory needed to put some more scarlet and gray hair on the chest.

After every game, we try to pull out five things that we observed to take away, and luckily this one is on the smiling side of the scoreboard for us to reflect on. It’s not all rosy though because there are some things that have to be much better next week.

Here are five things we learned from Ohio State’s hand-wringing win over Maryland Saturday.
