2020 Four Star Defensive End Announces Top Three

2020 4* DE Alfred Collins will be making his college decision on Feb 5 at 3:50 p.m. CST. Collins will decide between Alabama, OU, and Texas.

2020 four-star defensive end Alfred Collins out of Bastrop, TX has announced he will be making his college decision on Feb 5 at 3:50 p.m. CST. Narrowing it down to three schools, Collins said he will decide between Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Taking place at Cedar Creek High School, Collins’ commitment would be a big one for the Longhorns. Currently without any defensive ends in the 2020 class, he would add to a Texas defensive line that is expected to improve throughout the next couple of years.

Having a monster senior season, Collins recorded 86 tackles in 2019. 35 of them were for a loss and he added on eight sacks. Not only did he get to the quarterback, but he created turnovers, forcing four fumbles.

According to 247Sports’ Crystal ball, he is 100% Texas. He would join fellow defensive lineman Vernon Boughton and Sawyer Goram-Welch in the 2020 class, but those two are listed as defensive tackles.

Jalen Hurts won’t wear split Oklahoma-Alabama helmet in game

Former Oklahoma and Alabama quarterback, Jalen Hurts will not wear the split helmet given to him by Ridell and the Special Spectators…

A helmet has not gotten this much attention since Antonio Brown this past NFL preseason.

Former Oklahoma and Alabama quarterback, Jalen Hurts will not wear the split helmet given to him by Ridell and the Special Spectators foundation at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

“He’s not going to wear it,” Blake Rockwell, director of Special Spectators, told me when he joined “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5. “I don’t know how that got out there, but he’s not going to wear it.”

The helmet was made to commemorate Hurts’ success at both schools and features both shades of crimson. The Alabama side features the number two, Hurts’ number while he was the quarterback for the Crimson Tide.

Another helmet, identical to the one Hurts received will be auctioned off with the proceeds going towards Special Spectators.

Hurts has been seen at practice wearing his most recent Oklahoma helmet during Reese’s Senior Bowl practices and is expected to represent the Sooners on Saturday.

The Senior Bowl can be seen on NFL Network on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT.

College softball season is right around the corner and the Alabama Crimson Tide will open up the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country.

Coach Patrick Murphy will look to take ‘Team 24’ back to to the Women’s College World Series and win it all this time.

His team is full of returning talent from the 2019 season, the only major loss for the team was catcher Reagan Dykes.

The team is set to be an all-around powerhouse on offense, defense and in the circle.

Three members of the 2020 team have received special recognition, however.

Senior power hitter and infield specialist, Bailey Hemphil; Senior speedster and outfielder, Elissa Brown and the Sophormore ace in the circle, Montana Fouts, were all selected to the preseason All-SEC softball team.

Having three players on the team makes Alabama the most represented team in the SEC. Arkansas, LSU and Tennessee each have two players each on the team.

After an impressive season in 2019, they’ll look to build off of what they started.

Their season begins on Feb. 7 as the Crimson Tide will take on UNC and Florida State in a double-header.

Jalen Hurts’ helmet for Reese’s Senior Bowl split with Oklahoma, Alabama on each side

Oklahoma or Alabama? That was a question some were curious about when Jalen Hurts was announced as a member of the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Oklahoma or Alabama?

That was a question some were curious about when Jalen Hurts was announced as a member of the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

The question was answered Tuesday night: both.

Oklahoma’s crimson color and interlocking ‘OU’ logo on one side, his Alabama No. 2 and Alabama’s crimson on the other. Riddell got even more detailed—the Oklahoma side has a white facemask and the Alabama side has a gray facemask.

Reese’s Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy said helmet company Riddell made two—one for the game on Saturday, another that Hurts signed and will be auctioned for charity*.

Oklahoma’s 2019 signal-caller threw for 3,841 passing yards and 32 touchdowns, rushed for 1,298 more yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground on the way to the Heisman Trophy presentation in New York City. Hurts helped the Sooners win a fifth-straight Big 12 Championship and a College Football Playoff berth.

At Alabama, Hurts led the Crimson Tide to two national championship games and a 26-2 record in two seasons as a starter. He totaled 6,670 yards of offense and 61 touchdowns as a starter.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl will kickoff at 1:30 p.m. CT Saturday on NFL Network. Practices for the event begin on Tuesday.

The gap between Oklahoma, top teams is not because of recruiting

There was a talent gap between Oklahoma and LSU. But just how wide is that gap? The gap, though, is not because of a lack of recruiting.

We all saw it.

LSU walked out on the field against Oklahoma in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and looked bigger. Looked faster. Looked stronger.

The Tigers romped the Sooners by epic proportions. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow pitched a no-hitter against the Oklahoma defense. The Sooners made the LSU defense look like world beaters.

There was a talent gap between the two. But just how wide is that gap?

Here is what Lincoln Riley said about it the day after the game to a group of selected reporters.

“I don’t think the result of this game is going to change anything in recruiting. We know we’ve got to continue to get better personnel. Right now, we’ve got a lot of good personnel, but there’s still a handful of teams across the country, from top to bottom, that have better personnel than we do. That just is what it is. We’ve got good personnel. We’ve got a lot of good individual players, but we got to continue to build talent base across the whole team, and I think especially defensively.

“It’s kind of like the same process — I know you all are tired of me saying it — but the same process we went through offensively. We kind of got caught in a transitional year, certainly offensively, and scrounged it together and we were able to do some good things. We’re closing the gap. There’s no doubt we are. I think a lot of the things that need to happen are being done, it’s just there’s not always the immediate results we always want. That’s just part of building it.”

The gap he is referencing, isn’t really there for recruiting.

Oklahoma has been climbing in its recruited talent since Lincoln Riley got to Norman, Oklahoma in 2015. The Sooners have increased the amount of blue-chip recruits on its roster by 23.46 percent since the 2015 season. Oklahoma will be at 63.27 of its roster being four or five star recruits in the 2020 season as it stands today. The Sooners were at 39.81 percent in 2015.

Riley is right when it is in regard to three programs—Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia. Those three are across the 70 percent threshold of its roster being blue-chip recruits, with the Crimson Tide being at an unimaginable 88.78 of its roster being four or five-star recruits for the 2020 season.

Riley isn’t right when it comes to the tier underneath those three. Oklahoma has more recruited talent the last four years than LSU, Florida, Penn State, Texas and many others. The Sooners even have more recruited talent than Clemson, who was won two of the last three national championships and vying for a third in four years in a week and a half.

The conversation here lies within the comparison with Clemson. The Tigers, albeit their location in the southeast, are churning out NFL talent at every position across the board while recruiting at the same level the last four-to-six years as Oklahoma. Dabo Swinney’s ability to develop his talent is the reason the gap between them and the Sooners exists.

When it comes down to it, Oklahoma brought in 18 defensive backs since the 2016 recruiting class. Twelve of those defensive backs were four-star recruits. Only five of the defensive backs signed from 2016-18 made major contributions in multiple years thus far (Parnell Motley, Tre Brown, Tre Norwood, Patrick Fields and Bookie Radley-Hiles). Three of those from the 16-18 classes have transferred. Four of those four-star defensive backs came from the 2019 recruiting class, and the other, Ty DeArman, is already set to transfer.

For one final time—the Mike Stoops era at Oklahoma set the Sooners back. As did having Kerry Cooks oversee the Oklahoma secondary.

The notion that the gap is solely based on recruiting is true in a small instance. The reality that Oklahoma’s development of players, specifically on the defensive side of the ball, is what set the Sooners back.

That’s the burden that Alex Grinch had to live with in 2019, and what he’ll have to change in 2020 and the years to come.

Citrus Bowl: Alabama vs. Michigan odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Citrus Bowl betting odds and lines between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Michigan Wolverines with betting picks, tips and bets.

The Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2) look to end their season on a high note when they meet the Michigan Wolverines (9-3) in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando at 1 p.m. ET New Year’s Day (on ABC). We analyze the Alabama-Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Alabama vs. Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. Both teams have been solid on hitting the Over. Michigan is 9-3 O/U on the season, while Alabama is 7-5 despite some incredibly high O/U lines where the Crimson Tide had to supply most of the points.

2. Alabama is 6-1 both on the moneyline and against the spread in its last seven meetings with Big Ten schools.

3. When the Wolverines are expected to lose, they do so with alarming frequency. Michigan has lost its last 16 games against the moneyline when playing as an underdog.

Prediction

Alabama 42, Michigan 27

Moneyline (ML)

Alabama (-250) is a prohibitive favorite despite a slew of injuries on both sides of the ball. But, Michigan (+200) has a history of coming up short against elite opponents – HC Jim Harbaugh has yet to post a win against Ohio State in his tenure at Michigan. The 2:1 return is tempting, but the Wolverines are going to need too many things to go right for them and wrong for ‘Bama. If you must make a bet here, take insurance with Alabama, but I suggest PASSING and focusing on the spread and Over/Under.

Against the Spread (ATS)

This one has been over 7 points, but, currently BetMGM has Alabama a 6.5-point favorite (-125) over Michigan (+105). As would be expected, the payback is better for Michigan, but that’s because the sportsbooks want more action going the Wolverines’ way. I wouldn’t have been shocked to see the spread closer to 10 than less than seven, so this one screams, “TAKE ALABAMA!” because the game comes down to the wire close. Alabama could struggle and still hit the spread at the end.

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is high at 57.5 points (-115 Over, -106 Under), but history is on the side of the Over. In its last eight games against SEC schools, Michigan has hit the Over. ‘Bama has a penchant for getting in high-scoring games against good teams – its losses were 46-41 to LSU and 48-45 to Auburn. Michigan’s offense grew increasingly better from what it showed in September. All that needs to happen for the Over to hit is that one team gets up double digits in the first half, preferably the first quarter. Then it’s on. It could set a tone that should leave 57.5 points in the rear-view mirror midway through the fourth. Take the OVER.

WATCH: Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa weighing options

After a season-ending hip injury, Tua Tagovailoa isn’t sure what he’ll do next.

In an interview with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit on Tuesday, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said he’s “not too sure” about what’s next for his football career.

The junior, whose season ended with a hip dislocation against Mississippi State on Nov. 16, shared that he is thinking from a financial perspective, not an emotional one when weighing whether he should declare for the NFL draft or return to Alabama for his senior season.

“You think of risk-reward on coming back, you think of risk-reward on leaving,” Tagovailoa told Herbstreit. “Now is not the time to be making emotional decisions. Now, you have to change into thinking as a businessman. You have to make business decisions.”

Tagovailoa entered the 2019 season as a lock for the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, but injuries to his ankle and hip have dropped his stock.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 20.

With Alabama loss, it’s Oklahoma or Utah for the final College Football Playoff spot

Buckle up. With Alabama’s loss to Auburn, Final College Football Playoff spot is officially between Oklahoma and Utah.

Buckle up.

No. 5 Alabama’s 48-45 loss to No. 15 Auburn has opened the door to the College Football Playoff for No. 7 Oklahoma (10-1, 8-1 Big 12) to walk through.

The Sooners suffered a 48-41 upset at the hands of Kansas State on Oct. 16, but has since rattled off three-straight wins.

Oklahoma held off a late surge from No. 23 Iowa State the week after to win 42-41 on a two-point conversion late in the fourth-quarter. The Sooners rallied from a 28-3 deficit in the second-quarter and a 31-10 halftime deficit against now No. 9 Baylor to win 34-31, and then had a game-winning interception to win against TCU 28-24.

Utah will be contending with Oklahoma for the final spot. The No.6 ranked Utes play Colorado tonight and will need to win to advance to the Pac 12 Championship Game. There, they will face once College Football Playoff hopeful Oregon, who beat Oregon State 24-10.

Oklahoma is on the road at No. 21 Oklahoma State Saturday night. The Bedlam matchup is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.

The Sooners are already guaranteed to play No. 9 Baylor next Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on FOX in the Big 12 Championship Game.

The College Football Playoff selection Sunday will take place a day after the conference championships on Dec. 8.

Alabama at Auburn odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Alabama Crimson Tide at Auburn Tigers college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Alabama Crimson Tide (10-1, 6-1 SEC West) travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium to face the Auburn Tigers (8-3, 4-3) in their annual in-state Iron Bowl battle at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Alabama-Auburn odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Alabama is No. 5 and Auburn is No. 16 in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA Today Sports. Meanwhile, the Tide are also fifth in the College Football Playoff Rankings, while the Tigers are 15th.

Alabama at Auburn: Three things you need to know

1. Auburn sends its fans to the pay window often. Under coach Gus Malzahn, the Tigers are 7-2 against the spread as a home underdog and 8-2 ATS in its 10 games.

2. Neither team is starting the quarterback they intended to have under center at the start of the season. With Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa out for the season, sophomore Mac Jones gets his first “real” start. At Auburn, true freshman Bo Nix was pressed into action earlier than expected when starter Malik Willis was denied an eligibility waiver. This will be the first Iron Bowl for both starting QBs.

3. The eight wins Nick Saban has vs. Auburn in the Iron Bowl as ‘Bama’s head coach have come by an average of 24½ points.

Alabama at Auburn: Odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 1:50 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Alabama 27, Auburn 20

Moneyline (ML)

This is about as low a moneyline (-182) as you’ll ever see for Alabama. However, Auburn (+150) often plays Alabama tough, having won five of the last eight meetings between the two. This game doesn’t look to have blowout potential, so, if you’re think the Tigers will protect their home field, getting +150 is a pretty nice return. But we’re taking ALABAMA to win outright and investing to get a return.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The spread is Alabama -4.5 (+105 for Alabama, -125 for Auburn) and the better-than even money odds are also a rarity for ‘Bama. This one smells of a trap, which the boys in Vegas often do to entice bettors to take the side they want them to. That being said, the slim hopes Alabama has to make the championship playoff needs a decisive win. We don’t expect a blowout, but we can envision the Crimson Tide keeping their foot on the gas if they get an early lead. Take ALABAMA and lay the points.

Over/Under (O/U)

This is a tough one because Alabama is averaging 48½ points a game by itself. Saturday’s O/U is 50.5 (-106 on the Over, -115 on the Under). All the talk this week is about the offenses, but both defenses are allowing just 16 points a game and are capable of dominating. You have two unproven quarterbacks in Jones and Nix in the biggest game of their lives in this in-state rivalry, and we can see the potential for the defenses to dictate the pace of the game and both teams needing to run the ball and prevent turnovers. Take the UNDER.
