The Philadelphia Eagles are banged up at cornerback and suffered another injury when Avonte Maddox went down with an injury and Trevor Williams was forced into action. Maddox is expected to miss time and with Trevor Williams on the active roster, NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro is reporting that the Birds will sign cornerback Michael Jacquet to the practice squad.

Jacquet, 23, spent the reduced offseason and training camp with the Eagles and made an impression before being one of the final cuts.

Jacquet (6-1, 203) is a former wide receiver who flipped to the defensive side of the ball for his last two collegiate seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette in 2018 and 2019.

An undrafted free agent, the Eagles signed Jacquet to one of their bigger deals. The Eagles already had Craig James on IR before Maddox went down on Sunday.

With Craig James out and on short term injured reserve, the Philadelphia Eagles have elevated cornerback Trevor Williams up from the practice squad and onto the active roster.

Williams was signed by the Eagles to a reserve/future contract during the 2020 offseason after spending the first four years of his career with the Chargers (2016-19) and Cardinals (2019).

Williams originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers in 2016, after playing collegiately at Penn State, where he earned All-Big Ten honors following his junior and senior seasons.

The Philadelphia Eagles could be short at cornerback after Craig James suffered a significant injury on Sunday, and if they do seek out help for the secondary, a familiar name can no longer come back to the fold.

Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Jacksonville Jaguars have promoted cornerback Sidney Jones from the practice squad to the active roster.

Jones, the team’s 2017 second-round draft pick, has dealt with injuries and inconsistent play after tearing his Achilles prior to the draft.

Jones missed most of his rookie season recovering from the injury and never developed into the player the Eagles assumed they drafted. In Jacksonville, Jones will get the opportunity to play early and often, thus improving his confidence.

Philadelphia Eagles announce 8 captains for the 2020 NFL season

Carson Wentz, Fletcher Cox among 8 Eagles named a team captain

The 2020 NFL season is upon us and on Wednesday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced the eight players named team captains, providing leadership and an ear to Doug Pederson and the Eagles staff.

The Eagles had five captains last year, but after some growth and improved play this offseason, a few new names landed among the group.

The players were informed by head coach Doug Pederson during a team meeting on Wednesday morning.

“It’s a little bit of a different approach this year,” Pederson said on Wednesday morning shortly after informing the players at the daily team meeting. “It is important to me to select players who are great leaders, who are going to be captains all year. I felt like these gentlemen represented what we’re looking for in the way they’ve worked so hard and led the way for the team on and off the field. It’s a group I’m proud to call our captains for the season.”

The offensive captains for 2020 are – quarterback Carson Wentz, center Jason Kelce, and left tackle, Jason Peters. The defensive captains are defensive linemen Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham, along with safety Rodney McLeod. The special teams’ captains are Duke Riley and Craig James, two players who’ve only been with the Eagles since last year.

James has impressed so much, that he was rewarded with a contract extension.

4 takeaways from the Philadelphia Eagles releasing CB Sidney Jones

4 takeaways from the Philadelphia Eagles releasing CB Sidney Jones

When the Philadelphia Eagles used a second-round pick on Sidney Jones, they envisioned a player with a unique skill set whose game could translate to the NFL in a similar fashion to that of Stephon Gilmore.

Things never materialized for Jones here in Philadelphia and on Saturday, he was released along with Rasul Douglas.

Here are four takeaways from the huge move:

***

1. Howie Roseman’s 2017 draft class never materialized

Roseman entered the 2017 NFL Draft in Philadelphia with hopes of adding integral parts to what would become a Super Bowl roster. The Lombardi Trophy was delivered, but Roseman’s 2017 draft class will go down in history for all the wrong reasons after Jones was released on Saturday.

The only players remaining from that ten-man class are Derek Barnett and Nate Gerry. If not for Gerry becoming a starter at linebacker, this class would be even more dismal.

Barnett had his fifth-year option picked up, but if he doesn’t have a strong 2020 season, the Eagles could look to move on.

The Philadelphia Eagles waived 12 players on Thursday and placed Andre Dillard on injured reserve, officially ending his season. With the roster now sitting at 67 players, here are six players in danger of not making the 53 man roster.

1. Sidney Jones

Jones should make the roster by default but he’s been outplayed by Craig James and he lost his position battle with Avonte Maddox. Cornerbacks are hard to find, but Jones could be the odd man out over the next few days.
