Cowboys sign 350-pound NT to practice squad in wake of Hankins injury

Anthony Rush has been with several NFL teams and is coming off his 3rd stint in Philadelphia; he’ll provide depth along the interior DL. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys were dealt a blow this week with the news that massive defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins would be lost for the rest of the regular season.

The team is attempting to fill that hole with someone even more massive.

The Cowboys added Anthony Rush to the practice squad on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5-inch 350-pound nose tackle went undrafted out of UAB in 2019 and has bounced around with seven teams since then. He was most recently on his third stint with the Eagles, having been released Dec. 6.

Rush has seen time in 30 NFL games and started ten contests for the Falcons over the past 13 months. He’s recorded 40 tackles, four TFLs, two quarterback hits, two passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a half sack in his brief career.

A 26-year-old and a North Carolina native, Rush worked out for the Cowboys on Tuesday; the team contacted him about a visit on Sunday, just after Hankins suffered a pectoral injury in a 27-23 win over Hosuton.

It’s thought Hankins could return during the postseason; Rush provides important depth in the interim.

Linebacker Malik Jefferson was released to make room on the practice squad for Rush.

Rush will now join a Cowboys defensive tackle group that also includes Quinton Bohanna, Osa Odighizuwa, and Neville Gallimore.

Giants add DT Aaron Crawford to practice squad, release DB Olaijah Griffin

The New York Giants have signed DT Aaron Crawford to the practice squad and released DB Olaijah Griffin.

Editor’s note: The Giants terminated the contract of Aaron Crawford on Wednesday morning, less than 48 hours after he was signed.

With a need at defensive tackle after Nick Williams (biceps) landed on injured reserve, the New York Giants shuffled their practice squad a bit on Tuesday.

The team announced that defensive tackle Aaron Crawford had been signed. And in an effort to clear additional room for some upcoming moves, the Giants also released defensive back Olaijah Griffin from the reserve unit.

Crawford originally signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2020 where he played under current Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. The 6-foot-1, 315-pounder remained with Baltimore until being released on September 1.

In one career game (2020), Crawford has recorded one tackle.

Griffin, the son of Warren G and nephew of Dr. Dre, was claimed off waivered from the Buffalo Bills in mid-August and released two weeks later. The Giants re-signed him to their practice squad on September 28.

The team also worked out defensive tackle Anthony Rush, but he was not immediately signed.

The Giants currently have one open spot on their practice squad and two open spots on their 53-man roster.

Falcons release starting defensive tackle Anthony Rush

ROSTER NEWS: The Falcons have released starting nose tackle Anthony Rush after four games.

In a surprise move Thursday, the Atlanta Falcons released defensive lineman Anthony Rush. The 26-year-old nose tackle had started all four games for the Falcons this season.

However, as ESPN’s Michael Rothstein points out below, Rush had only played 33 percent of the team’s defensive snaps this season.

Taking Rush’s place in the starting lineup will likely be Abdullah Anderson or Timmy Horne. At the moment, the team hasn’t filled Rush’s vacant roster spot.

The Falcons signed DL Jaleel Johnson to the practice squad on Wednesday, so he could be an option as well. In other news, tight end Kyle Pitts missed his second straight practice on Thursday.

Make sure to check out the team’s full Week 5 injury report, and our updated 53-man roster tracker.

Continuing with a year-long trend, the Falcons’ defense is making plays to set the offense up for success. Not long after Duron Harmon intercepted Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Falcons linebacker Anthony Rush forced a Jacksonville fumble which was eventually recovered by Marlon Davidson.

Shortly after, running back Cordarrele Patterson rushed for his second touchdown of the day to give Atlanta a 14-0 lead over Jacksonville. Thus far, Patterson has accounted for 84 yards on the ground in his first game back from an ankle injury.

Watch the fumble recovery and ensuing touchdown run by Patterson below, as shared by the Falcons’ Twitter account.

Titans release S Bradley McDougald, DL Anthony Rush

The Titans parted ways with a pair of defenders on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans parted ways with a pair of players on Tuesday, releasing safety Bradley McDougald and defensive lineman Anthony Rush.

McDougald, who was originally a practice squad signing before being promoted to the active roster, started and played 40 snaps at safety in Week 2 after Amani Hooker was placed on Injured Reserve ahead of the contest.

The veteran struggled, giving way to fellow safety Dane Cruikshank, who ended up logging 36 snaps versus the Seattle Seahawks.

With McDougald gone, the Titans are down to just three safeties on their roster in Kevin Byard, Cruikshank, and Matthias Farley. Rookie Elijah Molden and Chris Jackson are also capable of playing the position.

It remains to be seen who will start next to Byard in Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, but chances are it’ll be Cruikshank and not Farley after the former saw significant time on Sunday.

Rush played 15 snaps in Week 1, but just one in Week 2. Tennessee is now down to just four defensive linemen on their roster in Jeffery Simmons, Denico Autry, Teair Tart and Larrell Murchison.

With the releases, the Titans have two open spots on their roster. It’s possible Tennessee will fill those holes with a pair of practice squad promotions in the coming days.

Titans activate DL Anthony Rush from COVID-19 list

Anthony Rush was the first Titans player to be placed on the COVID-19 list this week.

The Tennessee Titans have activated defensive lineman Anthony Rush off the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Rush was the first player to be added to the list this week.

And then there were six: quarterback Ryan Tannehill, tight end Geoff Swaim, outside linebacker Harold Landry, running back Jeremy McNichols, and linebackers Justin March-Lillard and Nick Dzubnar remain on the list.

Head coach Mike Vrabel and special teams coach Craig Aukerman are also in the COVID-19 protocol and are expected to be absent for the preseason finale on Saturday night.

Rush’s activation comes at the perfect time for him, as he’s competing for a depth spot along the defensive line. The preseason Week 3 contest will be his last chance to show he deserves a spot on the roster before final cuts occur on Aug. 31.

Tennessee will host the Chicago Bears at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Saturday night, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. CDT.

Packers release DL Anthony Rush to make room for new QB

The Packers released Rush to make room for QB Jake Dolegala, who was signed on Thursday.

The Green Bay Packers added a new quarterback to the roster on Thursday, necessitating a corresponding move.

The team released defensive lineman Anthony Rush to make room for quarterback Jake Dolegala on Thursday. Dolegala was at minicamp on a tryout basis but earned a roster spot after the three days.

With a full roster at 90 players, general manager Brian Gutekunst needed to make a move.

The Packers initially claimed Rush off of waivers from the Chicago Bears on Nov. 25 of last year. He was released in late December. The team signed him to a futures deal in January, providing him a spot on the initial offseason roster.

Rush played in one game with the Packers, seeing the field for one snap during a win over the Carolina Panthers in 2020.

The Packers were Rush’s fifth NFL team since going undrafted in 2019.

The Packers now have only seven defensive linemen on the roster, including rookies T.J. Slaton and Jack Heflin. Dolegala is the fifth quarterback, joining Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Blake Bortles and Kurt Benkert.

It’s possible the Packers saw Rush as a redundant player after drafting Slaton in the fifth round of the 2021 draft.

Report: Packers claim DL Anthony Rush off of waivers from Bears

The Packers claimed a 350-pound nose tackle off of waivers from the Bears.

The Green Bay Packers were awarded a massive nose tackle off of waivers from a division rival.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Packers claimed defensive lineman Anthony Rush, who was released by the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

Rush (6-5, 330) is a nose tackle option who could help provide depth for the Packers run defense, especially after placing Montravius Adams on injured reserve on Wednesday.

An undrafted free agent from UAB, Rush played in nine games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019 and four games with the Seattle Seahawks this season. He has 14 tackles, three tackles for losses, 0.5 sacks, two pass breakups and one quarterback hit over 215 career defensive snaps.

Rush must pass a physical before joining the Packers roster. He will be given a roster exemption until he completes the league’s testing and screening protocols.
