Lions waive veteran cornerback with injury status

Lions waive veteran cornerback Craig James with injury status as OTAs near their end

The Lions made a roster move in advance of Tuesday’s OTA session in Allen Park. Detroit waived veteran cornerback Craig James with an injury designation.

James, 28, signed to the Lions practice squad last December after being released by the New York Jets. He played in two games for New York in 2023 but didn’t see a lot of action with the Jets. The Lions signed James to a future/reserve contract this offseason. He had been wearing No. 25.

James has been in the NFL since 2018, bouncing around several teams. His exact injury is not known, though James was not present for last week’s minicamp session that was open to the media.

Tom Kennedy among 11 players signed to reserve/future deals by the Lions

The Detroit Lions signed 11 players to reserve/future contracts, including WR Tom Kennedy and OT Connor Galvin

One of the first orders of business for all teams in the offseason is to sign players to reserve/future contracts. With the Lions season not ending until after the NFC Championship game, it took longer than other years.

The Lions added 11 players to reserve/future deals on Tuesday. A reserve/future contract is a commitment by the team to bring the players back with a chance to compete for spots in the coming season. Typically, they are players coming off the practice squad or unsigned street free agents who had some connection to the team.

The biggest name is wide receiver Tom Kennedy, who has been on and off the Lions roster since the 2019 season.

The full list:

  • LB Mitchell Agude
  • WR Maurice Alexander
  • OL Matt Farniok
  • RB Jake Funk
  • OT Connor Galvin
  • CB Craig James
  • S Brandon Joseph
  • WR Tom Kennedy

Lions add CB Craig James to the practice squad

James is in his fifth NFL season and was last with the New York Jets

The practice squad deck got shuffled once again for the Detroit Lions. On Thursday, the Lions signed cornerback Craig James to the practice squad and released offensive lineman Michael Schofield to make room for James.

James, 27, had been on and off the New York Jets’ practice squad several times over the last two NFL seasons. He played in two games for New York in 2023, seeing action on 32 defensive snaps. The 5-foot-10 James is primarily a slot corner and does have over 300 special teams reps across five NFL seasons.

He’s also played for the Vikings and Eagles since joining Minnesota as an undrafted rookie from Southern Illinois in the 2018 season. James is not any relation to the former NFL running back of the same name.

Schofield had been on the Lions practice squad since mid-November. The 33-year-old did not get elevated for any games.

Colts worked out WR Jarvis Landry among several players

Here are the eight players the Indianapolis Colts worked out Tuesday, including WR Jarvis Landry.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for several players Tuesday, including five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

The Colts wound up signing one player from the group of workouts, and it’s clear they had an eye to find a potential return specialist, which is likely why they signed Jaydon Mickens to the practice squad.

The Colts still have one more spot open on the active roster after suspending Isaiah McKenzie and Tony Brown for conduct detrimental to the team so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they added another player from this group.

Here’s a look at the eight players the Colts worked out Tuesday:

Browns host Joe Flacco, Daylen Baldwin, 9 others for workout on Friday

The Browns hosted 11 for a workout today

The news out of Berea today as the Cleveland Browns hunt for another quarterback to stick on their roster was that veteran gunslinger Joe Flacco was in town for a workout. According to Aaron Wilson, however, Flacco was not the only player to work out today in Berea. Former Cleveland wide receiver Daylen Baldwin returned to try out for the Browns, but he and Flacco were just two among 11 the team hosted as they prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

With Deshaun Watson sidelined for the rest of the season, the Browns now have just fifth round rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker as the two quarterbacks on their roster. They are expected to add another to their roster soon.

Here are all 11 players that found their way into the facility as the team looks to potentially shake up their practice squad and give Flacco some targets to throw to during his workout.

Jets promote two cornerbacks, place Justin Hardee on IR in group of roster moves Saturday

The Jets called up a pair of cornerbacks Saturday and activated one from injured reserve while placing one on injured reserve.

The Jets called up cornerbacks Craig James and Ke’Montae Hayes from the practice squad. As it turned out, the Jets really needed the depth as they will now be without both of their starting cornerbacks in Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, both out with a concussion.

Also on Saturday, the Jets activated rookie offensive tackle Carter Warren from injured reserve while placing special teams ace Justin Hardee on injured reserve with a hamstring injury that will sideline him about 4-6 weeks.

Hardee sustained the injury last Sunday and then aggravated it during practice this week. He underwent surgery Friday.

With these moves, here is a look at who now makes up the 16-man practice squad for the Jets.

32 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 32 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 32 jersey number

The New England Patriots are officially 32 days away from their season opener against the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles. So we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 32 jersey.

It’s going to be hard envisioning anyone ever wearing that number again after Devin McCourty spent the last 13 years in it. The legendary safety retired from football back in March, officially bringing an end to his illustrious career in New England.

McCourty finished his NFL run with three Super Bowl titles, three All-Pro nods, two Pro Bowls and recognition as an All-Dynasty Team member for the Patriots. It’s also only a matter of time before he’s permanently enshrined in the New England Patriots’ Hall of Fame.

Let’s take a look at McCourty and all of the players that came before him that wore the No. 32 (via Pro Football Reference).

Jets sign recently released CB Craig James

Just a few days after being cut by the Eagles, Craig James has landed with the Jets

The New York Jets have signed cornerback Craig James to a one-year deal, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network. James was recently released by the Philadelphia Eagles this week, but it didn’t take him long to find a new team.

James came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020 with the Vikings. He spent the last three years with the Eagles, though he didn’t appear in a single game last season. In 2019 and 2020, he combined to play 18 games and make one start, breaking up one pass and recording 17 tackles.

He’s only played 83 defensive snaps in his career, but he can be a contributor on special teams; he played 342 special teams snaps from 2018-2020.

Eagles release cornerback Craig James

With the cornerback depth already stacked, the Philadelphia Eagles have released cornerback Craig James.

With training camp just eight days away, the Eagles have already started to trim the roster, releasing veteran cornerback Craig James according to Aaron Wilson.

James had spent the last three seasons in Philadelphia as a special teams standout but spent all of the 2021 season on the practice squad.

James will get a chance to sign with another team before the start of training camp, and the secondary is already loaded at several key positions.

Late in free agency, Philadelphia added James Bradberry to a cornerback group that already included Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Tay Gowan, Zech McPhearson, Kary Vincent Jr., Jimmy Moreland, Mac McCain, and Josiah Scott.
