Colts worked out WR Jarvis Landry among several players

Here are the eight players the Indianapolis Colts worked out Tuesday, including WR Jarvis Landry.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for several players Tuesday, including five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

The Colts wound up signing one player from the group of workouts, and it’s clear they had an eye to find a potential return specialist, which is likely why they signed Jaydon Mickens to the practice squad.

The Colts still have one more spot open on the active roster after suspending Isaiah McKenzie and Tony Brown for conduct detrimental to the team so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they added another player from this group.

Here’s a look at the eight players the Colts worked out Tuesday:

Former Clemson wide receiver released by the Houston Texans

NFL veteran Adam Humphries will look for opportunities elsewhere.

Former Clemson wide receiver and NFL veteran Adam Humphries got another shot in the league but was released by the Houston Texans as they made their cuts to complete their 53-man roster.

Though he was released, The Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans will likely sign him to their practice squad if he clears today. He still has good football in the tank, coming off appearing in 17 games for Washington last year, where he recorded 41 catches for 383 yards.

During his career with the Tigers, Humphries recorded 127 receptions for 1,097 yards and three touchdowns, 24 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries and 69 punt returns for 476 yards and one touchdown in 1,910 snaps over 53 games (27 starts).

Texans sign former Titans WR Adam Humphries

Former Titans WR Adam Humphries has signed with the Texans.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Adam Humphries had a rather tumultuous tenure in Nashville.

Humphries was signed to a $36 million contract in 2019 with the intention of him being an integral piece of an offense that was on the verge of a massive breakout.

Instead, his time in Tennessee was filled with unfortunate injuries that largely made him more of an afterthought within the offense as opposed to the featured weapon he was expected to be.

The Clemson product was eventually let go just two years into his four-year deal.

Since then, Humphries played for the Washington Commanders in 2021 but didn’t play a snap during the 2022 season despite workouts with the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants.

However, on Sunday afternoon, it was announced that Humphries was finally getting another chance to be on an NFL roster, signing with the Houston Texans.

Should Humphries find a way to make Houston’s 53-man roster, he’ll have the opportunity to face his former team on two separate occasions when the Titans and Texans meet in Week 15 and Week 17 of the 2023 campaign.

Giants work out James Washington, Adam Humphries

The New York Giants worked out a trio of players on Tuesday, including wide receivers James Washington and Adam Humphries.

The New York Giants held tryouts for a trio of players on Tuesday, including a pair of wide receivers: James Washington and Adam Humphries.

The 5-foot-11, 216-pound Washington was originally a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2018 NFL draft. He spent his first four seasons with the team before joining the Dallas Cowboys this past offseason.

Washington suffered a broken foot in training camp and was on IR for most of the season. Dallas activated him in early December before waiving him last week.

In 62 career games (25 starts), Washington has hauled in 114 receptions for 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Humphries signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted rookie free agent back in 2015. After four seasons with the Bucs, he spent two years with the Tennessee Titans and played for the Washington Commanders in 2021.

Tuesday marked the second time this season the Giants worked out Humphries.

In 96 career games (36 starts), Humphries has hauled in 320 receptions for 3,314 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Finally, the Giants also hosted quarterback Nathan Rourke for a tryout. It’s the second time they have hosted Rourke, who tried out as a wide receiver last year.

Giants work out Adam Humphries, several others

The New York Giants worked out WR Adam Humphries and a couple others in East Rutherford on Monday afternoon.

The New York Giants remain scheduled to meet with free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. this Thursday and Friday, but that didn’t stop them from working out several other players on Monday.

Three free agents worked out in East Rutherford, including veteran wide receiver Adam Humphries.

The 29-year-old Humphries was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted rookie out of Clemson in 2015. After four years with the Bucs, he joined the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and spent two seasons there. He last played for the Washington Commanders in 2021.

In 96 career games (36 starts), Humphries has hauled in 320 receptions for 3,314 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Along with Humphries, the Giants also worked out wide receiver Malik Taylor and quarterback Kaleb Eleby, a rookie who was recently selected by the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL draft.

None of the three were immediately signed to a contract.

Where does Washington’s wide receivers stand compared to the rest of the NFL?

How is Washington’s wide receiver position among the rest of the NFL? One thing is certain; Terry McLaurin needs help.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Washington Commanders felt they had taken a major step forward last offseason by signing wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries in free agency and drafting Dyami Brown in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Unfortunately for the Commanders, Samuel and Brown combined to catch 18 passes for 192 yards. Yes, you read that correctly. Samuel missed most of the season with a groin injury and when he did play, he was far from 100%. While Brown missed some time, he was slow to adjust to the NFL but showed promise late in the season with big catches against the Cowboys and Eagles.

The one constant for Washington at wide receiver was Terry McLaurin. No surprise there. Despite major quarterback issues, McLaurin went over 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season. The Commanders essentially had no downfield passing game for much of the season, unless McLaurin was making impossible catches.

Humphries was solid, catching 41 passes for 383 yards. The biggest surprise was free agent DeAndre Carter. Signed to be the team’s return man, Carter caught 24 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns. The coaching staff didn’t do a good job of manufacturing more touches for Carter late in the season. He has a future in Washington.

Cam Sims missed several games but had one of the best catches in the NFL against Dallas. He finished with 15 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

NFL.com recently reviewed every NFL team’s situation at wide receiver, breaking them down into four tiers. Washington came in the “need immediate help” tier.

McLaurin needs help. It felt like the dynamic receiver was on a solo plane ride for most of the 2021 season. McLaurin netted 77 catches for 1,053 yards and five TDs. The next closest wide receiver in Washington was Humphries, who had 41 catches for 383 yards. Yeesh. Samuel was signed to be that do-it-all threat who could capitalize on coverage rolling towards McLaurin, but he played in just five games due to injury. With money to spend, the Commanders should look to add another playmaker on the outside. If Samuel can stay healthy, McLaurin continues to dominate and Washington bolsters the wideout room, it could help buoy whoever is under center in 2022.

Yes, McLaurin needs help. He’s needed help for three seasons now. Samuel was supposed to provide that help. Can Washington be confident that Samuel will be the player it expected when signing him to a three-year deal last March?

The Commanders can’t spend big on a receiver in free agency because a contract for McLaurin is the top priority behind finding a new quarterback. But Washington should scour the secondary market for wide receiver help and also consider drafting one on day two.

Humphries, Carter and Sims are all free agents in 2022. Washington likes all three players, but don’t be surprised if Carter is the only one who returns.

Did Washington offer to trade for Aaron Rodgers?

Did Washington make a trade proposal for Aaron Rodgers? It was another day full of Rodgers’ drama.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is amazing at extending plays, finding the open receiver downfield, game after game, year after year.

No. 12 has passed for over 4,000 yards in 10 different seasons and each of the last four. While Taylor Heinicke threw 15 interceptions during the 2021 season, Rodgers played each game in 2018-2020, and 16 of 17 in 2021 to throw 15 interceptions. Oh, this while, passing for 136 touchdowns.

A 136:15 touchdown/interception ratio?

You bet, I would love to see Rodgers in Burgundy and Gold! And so would Terry McLaurin, Logan Thomas, Curtis Samuel, Cam Sims, Adam Humphries and J.D. McKissic.

Yet, isn’t there another side to Rodgers? Last year during the offseason, we heard and read ad nauseam how Rodgers was feeling like the victim, not respected, not loved by the Packers front office.  Am I the only one that doesn’t want to hear again this offseason how he is leaning to retirement one day, wants to be traded another day, is unhappy the next?

Two days ago Rodgers felt the need to inform Pat McAfee that he had just completed a 12-day cleanse.  12 days of cleansing the body, eliminating unwanted waste, removing toxins from your body? Not exactly the 12 Days of Christmas, huh? Sounds somewhat private to me, but Rodgers then continued, “I was going through some pictures from the last year and felt an intense amount of gratitude for the life that I have and the lessons I’ve learned.”

Would that gratitude include Mark Murphy and the Green Bay Packers management who signed Rodgers to that $134 million deal? Or that this upcoming 2022 season (according to Spotrac.com) Rodgers is set to count $46.1 million against the Packers salary cap?

That puts the Packers over the cap; so, how will the Packers respond? Rework a few contracts, release a few players, threaten a few with pay cuts or they will simply be released?

If ESPN’s Dianna Russini is accurate, she reported today that Rodgers wants to be the highest-paid player in the NFL. Not only does he want to be the highest-paid player, but she added, “by a wide margin.”  Yet, Russini said teams have already offered the Packers trades for Rodgers.

I wonder if the most endearing factor attracting these teams to Rodgers is his “intense amount of gratitude?”

John Keim doesn’t expect Brandon Scherff to return

ESPN’s John Keim discusses free agency and quarterbacks.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

ESPN’s Washington Commanders insider John Keim appeared on Kevin Sheehan’s The Team 980 show Tuesday, stating he is not yet accustomed to writing Washington Commanders. But Keim did say (as I did last night) he saw the survey as actually a positive for the Commanders that 41% already like the name.

Bobby McCain, J.D. McKissic, DeAndre Carter and Joey Slye are free agents Washington would like to retain. Due to his injury history, don’t expect Brandon Scherff to come back at a high price tag. Keim feels there will be a market for McKissic, however, because he is very good out of the backfield. Ricky Seals-Jones and Cam Sims are also good depth guys they would like back. Adam Humphries is wanted; however, he is good enough he could sign elsewhere, being more selective of the quarterback.

Keim is certain Washington coaches will want to play Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis outside, so they will pursue an inside linebacker in free agency or the draft. A good inside linebacker would really make an impact in this defense. Keim genuinely feels Davis can play on the outside better than he did inside.

Who might the Commanders cut this offseason? Landon Collins is simply not feasible unless they lower that cap hit. “I don’t think Landon Collins is going to get that (his current salary) on the open market,” expressed Keim. He played well enough at a hybrid, if he does go to another team, they will likely use him in a similar role.

Keim laughingly said of course they are going hard after a quarterback. Head coach Ron Rivera has stated so multiple times. Deshaun Watson certainly would draw interest from Washington but there are too many questions and his court cases could also go into May.

Understandably Keim insisted it doesn’t make sense why the Raiders’ new coach Josh McDaniel or Seattle would get rid of their starters Derek Carr and Russell Wilson, respectively. There is no clear path to the next quarterback in either case.

Would they be interested in Carson Wentz? Keim thinks so but was quick to add that Wentz is someone they would probably add with a QB draft choice as well.
