Browns host Joe Flacco, Daylen Baldwin, 9 others for workout on Friday

The Browns hosted 11 for a workout today

The news out of Berea today as the Cleveland Browns hunt for another quarterback to stick on their roster was that veteran gunslinger Joe Flacco was in town for a workout. According to Aaron Wilson, however, Flacco was not the only player to work out today in Berea. Former Cleveland wide receiver Daylen Baldwin returned to try out for the Browns, but he and Flacco were just two among 11 the team hosted as they prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

With Deshaun Watson sidelined for the rest of the season, the Browns now have just fifth round rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker as the two quarterbacks on their roster. They are expected to add another to their roster soon.

Here are all 11 players that found their way into the facility as the team looks to potentially shake up their practice squad and give Flacco some targets to throw to during his workout.

Madden 24: Launch ratings for Colts WRs, safeties

Check out the Madden NFL 24 launch ratings for Colts WRs and safeties.

With training camp right around the corner for the majority of teams, EA Sports has started unveiling “Madden NFL 24” launch ratings ahead of the release date for the game.

The first group to be revealed in these launch ratings were the wide receivers and safeties. Only one member of the Colts at these positions was given a rating above 80, which was wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Here’s a look at the launch ratings for the wide receivers and safeties on the Colts in “Madden NFL 24:”

Colts sign WR Malik Turner

The Colts signed free-agent WR Malik Turner on Thursday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent wide receiver Malik Turner, the team announced Thursday.

A five-year NFL veteran, Turner entered the league in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois. He initially signed with the Seattle Seahawks where he played for two seasons.

He spent the 2020 preseason with the Green Bay Packers but was waived before the start of the regular season. Turner then was claimed by the Dallas Cowboys where he spent the next two seasons before becoming a free agent.

Turner also spent time on the practice squads/offseason rosters of the San Francisco 49ers (2022), Las Vegas Raiders (2022) and Houston Texans (2022).

Turner, 27, has appeared in 44 career games (three starts). He’s recorded 29 receptions for 414 yards and four touchdowns.

Texans place WR Nico Collins on injured reserve; make 2 other roster moves

The Houston Texans have placed WR Nico Collins on injured reserve along with two other roster moves.

Nico Collins’ season is over.

The Houston Texans placed Collins on injured reserve ahead of their Week 16 encounter with the Tennessee Titans Dec. 24 at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from Nissan Stadium. With a four-game minimum a player must remain on injured reserve before being placed back on the active roster, and Houston having three games to go, Collins’ season is over.

The former 2021 third-rounder from Michigan caught 37 passes for 481 yards and two touchdowns through 10 games, seven of which he started. The production is an improvement over his 33 catches for 446 yards and a score through 14 games in 2021, eight of which he started.

The Texans used Collins’ empty roster spot to activate safety Grayland Arnold from the injured reserve.

Houston also signed former Dallas Cowboys wideout Malik Turner to the practice squad. The former 2018 undrafted free agent from Illinois had a prolific 2021 with Dallas wherein he caught 12 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns.

49ers roster moves: 2 WRs, RB elevated for game vs. Rams

Tevin Coleman, Malik Turner and Willie Snead IV were all brought up off the #49ers practice squad for Monday’s game vs. the Rams.

With injuries hitting their roster hard, the 49ers made a handful of additions via their practice squad ahead of Monday night’s game against the Rams. They also placed linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair on injured reserve with a knee injury.

San Francisco announced wide receivers Willie Snead IV and Malik Turner, along with running back Tevin Coleman were all elevated from the practice squad. It’ll be standard elevations for Coleman and Turner, they’ll revert back to the practice squad after the game.

Snead was officially added to the roster to replace the spot vacated by Al-Shaair going to IR. The LB is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, so Snead will give the 49ers some WR depth in the meantime. He could play a role Monday with rookie Danny Gray sidelined by a hip injury.

Turner will provide special teams assistance thanks to a slew of injuries thinning out their special teams contributors.

Coleman could actually see some real action on offense depending on how head coach Kyle Shanahan feels about the readiness of veteran RB Marlon Mack and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason. Jeff Wilson Jr. shouldered a brunt of the running back load in Week 3 with Mason earning one carry. Mack didn’t make an appearance. WR Deebo Samuel will also contribute in the run game.

Why 49ers 3rd-round picks were inactive vs. Bears

Why were third-round rookies Tyrion Davis-Price and Danny Gray inactive vs. the Bears? Kyle Shanahan explained after Sunday’s game:

The 49ers took a pair of skill position players in the third round of this year’s draft. Both running back Tyrion Davis-Price and wide receiver Danny Gray inactive when San Francisco opened their season Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan after the game told reporters special teams was the factor that left Davis-Price and Gray in street clothes for their first NFL action.

“When it comes down to our third back it’s about who went in on special teams more, and Mason did a better job throughout the week” Shanahan told reporters.

When asked if the same was true for Gray Shanahan said the situation was “the exact same.”

Both players are down a bit on the depth chart, so the likelihood they were going to make an impact on offense was relatively low. That’s why the club turns to special teams where undrafted rookie RB Jordan Mason and practice squad WR Malik Turner are able to contribute. Both Mason and Turner were active Sunday.

This will be something to keep an eye on moving forward, especially with RB Elijah Mitchell nursing a knee injury that forced him out of the game in the second quarter. Davis-Price would presumably dress in any game Mitchell is sidelined.

For Gray it could be a matter of game plan. A sloppy, wet game in Chicago didn’t look like a good time to unleash the speedy WR and his downfield ability.

Last season RB Trey Sermon was a third-round pick and a healthy Week 1 scratch who eventually saw some action due to injury while working his way into a special teams role. That could be the path both Davis-Price and Gray have to take to be active with any regularity. Until then San Francisco will prioritize players who can give them special teams snaps when they’re not getting time on offense.

49ers elevate WR, S from practice squad for Week 1

The 49ers made a couple roster moves to bolster their safety group and wide receiver corps for the season opener:

The 49ers on Saturday announced a couple roster moves before Sunday’s season opener in Chicago. They elevated wide receiver Malik Turner and safety Tashaun Gipson from the practice squad to the active roster, so both will be available for San Francisco.

Turner was a player some pegged to make the final roster. He was cut, but signed with the 49ers’ practice squad and will now get an opportunity to play the role he’d have filled had he made the 53-man roster. Don’t expect Turner to be involved a ton on offense, but he should be a big-time contributor on special teams.

Gipson will provide some depth at safety for the 49ers as they face his former team. With free safety Jimmie Ward sidelined by a hamstring injury, the 49ers have just three safeties on the active roster: Talanoa Hufanga, George Odum and Tarvarius Moore. Gipson gives them a little bit of wiggle room in the back end of their defense in the event of an injury.

Both players were brought up with standard elevations, so they will revert back to the practice squad after Sunday’s game, and the 49ers weren’t required to make any moves to clear a spot for them on the 53-man roster.

49ers WR Malik Turner fined after big hit in preseason finale

The play that likely earned 49ers WR Malik Turner a $5,750 fine was mostly the exact type of play the 49ers want to see him make.

49ers wide receiver Malik Turner made a loud entrance into Thursday’s preseason finale in Houston when he thumped the Texans’ punt returner on San Francisco’s first punt of the game. The collision didn’t draw a flag, but it was likely the impetus for a $5,750 fine levied against him by the NFL.

NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Saturday reported Turner was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Given that the hit was a helmet-to-helmet blow where the 49ers’ gunner led with the crown of his helmet, it’s hard to imagine the hefty fine was related to anything else he might’ve done.

While that hit earned him a fine, the play is ultimately the reason Turner will likely wind up on San Francisco’s roster. He’s a good special teams player for a club that badly needs to improve that unit. He had a nice preseason as a pass catcher, but kick coverage is where he’s going to make the biggest impact this season, and that play was dynamite coverage where he arrived just as the ball nestled into the punt returner’s hands.

The hit would likely draw a flag and another fine if he flies in head first again, so that’ll be something he has to avoid. Everything else before that was a win for the veteran receiver.

Watch 49ers WR Malik Turner haul in incredible 1-handed catch

This catch by #49ers WR Malik Turner is fun.

49ers wide receiver Malik Turner made an incredible catch during a one-on-one drill in Tuesday’s practice. While one catch doesn’t make a player’s entire camp, it’s at least some indicator of the quality on San Francisco’s depth chart.

The quality at the top of the 49ers receiving corps has never been a question mark. Deebo Samuel is a First-Team All-Pro and former first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk looks primed to break out in a big way. Even Jauan Jennings came on strong as an elite run blocker and chain mover. Throw in offseason signee Ray-Ray McCloud and third-round rookie Danny Gray and the club could have five legitimately reliable NFL receivers. Then there’s Turner who pulled down this amazing grab:

That’s rookie cornerback Samuel Womack in coverage. The ball was really well-thrown by quarterback Trey Lance, and the expectation in one-on-ones is for the receiver to get the better of the DB. Especially when it’s a veteran receiver against a rookie corner.

The catch is out of control though regardless of situation. To haul in a high-arcing deep ball like that with a defender grabbing at one arm is extremely impressive and will surely stick out to coaches. One catch won’t punch Turner’s ticket to a roster spot, but he could be the frontrunner for a sixth WR job if the team carries that many. Thanks to his ability to play special teams he made the cut in our last roster projection.

Turner signed with the 49ers this offseason after spending his first two seasons in Seattle and the last two seasons in Dallas. During his four-year career he has 29 catches for 414 yards and four touchdowns in 41 games. He’s also played 500 special teams snaps in the last three seasons.

He’s on the roster bubble for now, but more catches like this one will make it hard to leave him off the team come September.
