Jets release Rodger Saffold from practice squad

The Jets released offensive lineman Rodger Saffold from the practice squad, per Field Yates of ESPN.

The Jets originally signed Saffold to the practice squad on October 31 as potential depth given the injuries the Jets had been dealing with throughout the season. He was never elevated for a game.

The 35-yard-old Saffold was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate last season with the Bills. 2023 was Saffold’s 13th NFL season. He was selected by the Rams at No. 33 overall in the 2010 draft.

Updated 16-man practice squad for Jets after Craig James signing

The Jets added three players and released three players from the practice squad this week. Cornerback Craig James is back with the Jets while the team also added cornerbacks Tae Hayes and Kalon Barnes.

To make room for those three, the Jets released a pair of offensive linemen, Cedric Ogbuehi and Chris Glaser, as well as cornerback Nehemiah Shelton.

With these moves, here is a look at who now makes up the 16-man practice squad for the Jets.

Jets bring back Cedric Ogbuehi, sign veteran tackle to practice squad

Cedric Ogbuehi is back with the Jets.

The Jets brought back a familiar face Thursday by signing veteran offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to their practice squad. To make room, the Jets released offensive lineman Ryan Swoboda.

Ogbuehi returns to the Jets after appearing in seven games last season for the team including five starts. He had also re-signed with the team in April but was released in May.

Ogbuehi, a 2015 first-round pick of the Bengals, gives the Jets another veteran option along the offensive line, particularly with some question marks occurring. Duane Brown missed two days of practice this week and rookie Carter Warren remains on injured reserve. If Brown can’t go, Billy Turner and Mekhi Becton would likely be the two starters with Max Mitchell as the backup. Ogbuehi at least now gives the Jets a potential veteran practice-squad elevation candidate in case they need it.

Swoboda joined the Jets’ practice squad on August 31 when the Jets were first building the group for 2023 following their cutdown to 53 players. He was an undrafted rookie out of Central Florida who spent training camp with the Detroit Lions.

Here’s your 16-man practice squad for the Jets

The Jets filled out their 16-man practice squad Thursday with the addition of six players on top of the 10 they announced on Wednesday.

Practice squad players can be elevated up to three times during the season. If a team wants to bring up a player after those three call-ups, they have to sign that player to the active roster.

Teams may also select four players to be protected each week from being signed to another team’s active roster. Teams can pluck players from another team’s practice squad but would then count against the 53 for three weeks, even if he is released before then.

With that in mind, here are the 16 players currently on the Jets practice squad.

  • QB Tim Boyle
  • CB Craig James
  • LB Sam Eguavoen
  • S Tyreque Jones
  • RB Xazavian Valladay
  • TE Zack Kuntz
  • OL Adam Pankey
  • DL Tanzel Smart
  • DL Marquiss Spencer
  • LB Caleb Johnson
  • S Trey Dean

Former Lion Nick Bawden signed to Gang Green’s squad following a workout on Wednesday. The addition of the fullback could spell trouble for Trevon Wesco.

The New York Jets have a full 16-man practice squad after their latest roster moves.

The Jets announced that they have signed LB Alec Ogletree and WR Jaleel Scott to the practice squad. They also placed WR Donte Moncrief on practice squad injured reserve. The Jets still have one roster spot left on their 53-man active roster.

Ogletree has some familiarity with Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. The two spent three seasons together with the Rams with Williams as the defensive coordinator and Ogletree as a starting linebacker. After spending five seasons with the Rams, Ogletree was traded to the Giants, where he stayed for two years. A former first-round pick, Ogletree is a player the Jets could plug in as a starting linebacker in case of injuries down the road.

As for Scott, he was drafted in the fourth round out of New Mexico State by the Ravens in 2018. Scott missed all of the 2018 season due to injury. He returned in 2019 only to make one catch for six yards in three games. The Ravens cut Scott on Saturday.
