Former Alabama DB Trevon Diggs voted as the 60th best player in the NFL

Trevon Diggs voted as the 60th-best player in the NFL by players and personnel

What a week it has been for former Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs! On Tuesday, Diggs signed a five-year contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys worth $97 million and on Friday he was voted as the 60th best player in the entire NFL.

Diggs was a second-round pick for the Cowboys in the 2020 NFL draft and has gone on to be one of the best value picks in franchise history. Through three years in the league, Diggs has started 44 of 45 games he has played in and posted 169 total tackles, 17 interceptions, and 49 passes defended. In 2021, Diggs earned a First-team All-Pro selection after he led the NFL with 11 interceptions, a feat which hadn’t been done since Everson Walls in 1981.

Last season, Diggs earned a second consecutive Pro Bowl appearance and set a career-high in tackles with 59. Quarterbacks have begun to pick up on Diggs’s ball-hawking tendencies, and as a result, he tends to get much less action to his side of the field. Diggs is easily one of the five or ten best cornerbacks in the NFL and is on pace for a historic career.

His peers recognize this as well as Diggs was voted as the 60th-best player in the NFL heading into the 2023 season. Any list that is voted on by your opponents and rivals carries a little more weight, so to be viewed as one of the 100 best football players on earth must feel very rewarding.

Jets CB Sauce Gardner not happy with Pete Carroll’s joke on Twitter

It appears there is a bit of a cross country rivalry brewing between the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets… or perhaps just Sauce Gardner.

Jets star cornerback Sauce Gardner recently made headlines with comments regarding his draft process, and he wasn’t exactly thrilled with the Seahawks. According to Gardner, he says he was uncomfortable during his interview with the Seahawks because Pete Carroll was too close to him.

Well, Gardner’s comments certainly made their way to Carroll’s attention, and Seattle’s 71 year old coach responded to the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year on Twitter.

It does not take long when browsing through Carroll’s Twitter account to see he is not the most active user. Tweets from him are infrequent, and understandably mostly Seahawks related content. Clearly, Gardner’s comments struck a nerve with Carroll enough for him to poke a little fun online.

However, Gardner did not seem to appreciate the joke and fired back on his Twitter. He also continued to talk about it on his live Twitch stream, accusing Seattle’s PR team of merely being jealous of his Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

It appears there is a bit of a cross country rivalry brewing between the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets… or perhaps just Sauce Gardner. However, both sides will have to wait at least a year to duke it out on the field, as the Seahawks and Jets are not scheduled to play each other in 2023.

Unless of course, they meet in the Super Bowl. If that’s the case, bring a jacket because Hell obviously froze over.

Alabama CB Eli Ricks not starting against Utah State

Eli RIcks coming off the bench against Utah State

Former LSU cornerback, [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag], was maybe the biggest grab out of the transfer portal for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide this offseason. However, it might take a few more weeks for Ricks to see starting time as he will be second string today against Utah State.

Saban elected to go with McKinstry and Arnold to start, but Ricks will get a chance to showcase his abilities throughout the night. Tyler Harrell, another huge portal addition, will also be out this evening against the Aggies.

REPORT: Former Alabama DB Saivion Smith signs with Cowboys

Former Alabama cornerback Saivion Smith has signed with the Dallas Cowboys, as reported by Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Details of the contract are not yet available.

Smith will be joining other former Tide products in Dallas, such as star wide receiver Amari Cooper and newly-signed safety HaHa Clinton-Dix.

Smith only played one season in Tuscaloosa as a junior, but chose to forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the 2019 NFL Draft.

In that one year with Alabama, the cornerback accumulated 60 total tackles, five pass deflections, three interceptions and a defensive touchdown.

There was plenty of criticism thrown at Smith after he decide to forgo his senior season. He later went undrafted and spent his rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith will likely serve in a rotational role with the Cowboys, but it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that he could eventually work his way up to a lead role in the secondary.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on Alabama alum in the NFL!
