Fifth-year Gators WR enters college football transfer portal

This legacy defensive back will seek greener pastures for his final two years of eligibility.

Florida Gators defensive back [autotag]Ethan Pouncey[/autotag] announced on Thursday his entrance into the NCAA transfer portal after spending four years in Gainesville.

The 6-foot, 169-pound pass-catcher arrived in the Swamp alongside his brother Jordan — who transferred from the Texas Longhorns — in 2020. The two are notably second cousins with former standouts Maurkice and Mike Pouncey.

A four-star recruit out of Winter Park (Florida), Pouncey was ranked No. 195 overall nationally and No. 14 at his position coming out of high school. However, was unable to rise on the Gators’ depth chart during his UF tenure, sitting out the entire season in both 2020 and 2023, while playing in 11 games in 2021 and just three in 2022.

Pouncey earned a redshirt for the 2022 season, which leaves him with two years of collegiate eligibility remaining wherever he lands. He also made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2022 and 2023.

Throughout his career, Pouncey has recorded six total tackles — four solo, two assisted — over 14 appearances with the Orange and Blue.

2022 Florida Football Season Preview: Cornerbacks

Kaiir Elam is off to the NFL, but the Gators still have plenty of talent at cornerback. Here’s who Florida will be using in the secondary for 2022.

The penultimate group in Gators Wire’s preseason position-by-position breakdown of the 2022 Florida football roster is none other than the cornerbacks.

Gone is [autotag]Kaiir Elam[/autotag], the team’s lockdown and lead corner last season. The man who backed Elam up in 2021, sophomore [autotag]Jason Marshall Jr[/autotag]., will replace him as the team’s No. 1 in the position room after proving himself worthy as a true freshman.

Behind him, things are less clear, but there’s a group of serviceable defensive backs that could use some playing time to reach their full potential. There’s also [autotag]Jaydon Hill[/autotag], who missed all of last year with a torn ACL. He’s out to start the season but should work his way back into the rotation over the course of the year. Before the injury, he was projected to compete for starting time opposite of Elam.

Here is a look at all seven cornerbacks on the 2022 Florida football fall roster.

Florida updates depth chart after dismissing Elijah Blades from the program

Elijah Blades is gone, but who is replacing him on Florida’s depth chart against LSU?

Dan Mullen has not made many adjustments to his depth chart this season, but the loss of Elijah Blades has a new cornerback listed on the depth chart ahead of a Week 7 matchup with Lousiana State.

Blades was dismissed from the team after missing a few games with injury and not dressing for the Vanderbilt game. Replacing him is Ethan Pouncey, who has four tackles across four games this year. Kaiir Elam, Avery Helm and Jason Marshall Jr. are all still solidly ahead of Pouncey, so he’ll have time to ease into the new role.

Speaking of Elam, it appears he’ll be returning after missing three weeks with a knee injury. Starting running back Malik Davis is also set to return after sitting last week against Vanderbilt. Dameon Pierce and Nay’Quan Wright held up fine in Davis’ absence, but it was still a down week on the ground for the Gators.

Florida will be on the road again this weekend, and the offensive line struggled with penalties the last time they visited another SEC school. Richard Gouraige should be back at left tackle for Florida, giving the Gators their best available guys upfront.

Mullen mentioned that the team had been working on tweaking the snap count in preparation for Death Valley, but wouldn’t divulge any secrets ahead of the game. If the line can stay healthy, the preparation should help them perform much better on the road this time around.

Overview:

The Pouncey name means something at Florida and Ethan Pouncey is ready to add on to the family legacy. The former four-star cornerback and his brother Jordan, a receiver for the Gators, are the cousins of legendary Florida linemen Mike and Maurkice Pouncey.

Pouncey didn’t play a game in his first year due to season-ending hip surgery. With Jaydon Hill going down for the year with an ACL tear, Pouncey has a chance to fight for snaps. Coach Dan Mullen has mentioned Pouncey in a group of young players that could receive playing time as a result of the spot opening up. Even if he doesn’t play much, he has tons of eligibility left.

The concern with Pouncey as a recruit was that he didn’t have the size necessary to compete at the FBS level, but Florida’s strength and conditioning team has helped him bulk up over the summer. After bulking up, Pouncy could see some real development this year.

During spring camp, Pouncey showed flashes of speed and began tracking the ball well. If he can keep his skills consistent with the added weight, he could be the next Pouncey to go down in Gators history.

Former Texas WR Jordan Pouncey announces his transfer

Former Texas wide receiver Jordan Pouncey has announced he will be playing football Florida next season. Pouncey had two career catches.

Former Texas wide receiver Jordan Pouncey and his younger brother Ethan Pouncey have announced they will be playing football at the University of Florida next season. Ethan tweeted out a YouTube video where they said playing together “feels like their dreams have been manifested.”

Jordan is a 6’2, 205-pound wide receiver that committed to playing for the Longhorns in February 2017. He announced he would be leaving Texas in October 2019 so he could get more playing time.

Ethan is a 2020 4* corner that had offers from 21 different schools, including Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, and Texas. His commitment to Florida moved them into the top 10 in the 247 2020 rankings.

You can watch their commitment video here:

Jordan Pouncey had a career two catches for Texas, with both coming this season. One was for against Louisiana Tech for 11 yards, the other against Rice for eight yards.

Four-star CB Ethan Pouncey stays close to home, commits to Florida

Texas graduate transfer Jordan Pouncey will be joined by his brother, 4-star cornerback prospect Ethan, at Florida after the pair committed to the Gators over the holiday weekend.

One of Florida’s top uncommitted prospects, four-star cornerback Ethan Pouncey, picked the Florida Gators on Sunday, shortly after Florida’s victory against in-state rival Florida State.

Pouncey — who was previously committed to Texas — chose the Gators alongside his brother, Jordan Pouncey, who is currently a Texas wide receiver. The younger Pouncey took multiple visits to Gainesville even as a Texas recruit, and the two brothers visited campus together last week before both deciding Florida was their future home, per 247Sports.

One of the key factors to landing the younger Pouncey? The presence of Assistant Director of Player Personnel Keiwan Ratliff, who was Ethan Pouncey’s 7-on-7 coach:

“My 7on7 coach, Coach Rat [Keiwan Ratiff], he’s been like a family friend for a while so I know he will look out for me there,” Pouncey told 247Sports. “It helps a lot having him there. For me, it’s all about being comfortable and the people there. Coach Rat will be there for me so it’s easier to relax.”

The two brothers will be able to play again from Day 1, thanks to Jordan Pouncey’s impending graduation. A graduate transfer, one Pouncey brother could face off against the other in practices next year in Gainesville … something that once seemed possible in Austin.
