Chiefs awarded a compensatory pick for the 2024 NFL draft

The Kansas City #Chiefs were awarded one compensatory pick for the 2024 NFL draft.

The league has officially announced compensatory draft picks for the 2024 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs are again gaining a compensatory pick for the upcoming NFL Draft. The NFL has named the Chiefs one of the 14 franchises to receive a selection this year after rewarding three in the 2023 NFL Draft. Kansas City’s listed pick is in the fifth round, 172nd overall, and it has been the 31st compensatory pick in the team’s history since 1994.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, the NFL states that a team losing more or better compensatory free agents (“CFA”) than it acquired in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The compensatory picks are positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

The Chiefs lost free agents from the 2023 season that affected this year’s compensation were offensive tackle Orlando Brown, wide receiver Mecole Hardman, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, safety Juan Thornhill, and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie.

The additions of safety Mike Edwards, defensive end Charles Omenihu, offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor, linebacker Drue Tranquill, and the reacquisition of Hardman were compensable free agents gained by the Chiefs.

Kansas City now has a total of seven draft picks for Brett Veach and his team to work with in the 2024 NFL draft.

Free agency is just days away, and speculation abounds regarding what the Kansas City Chiefs might do to improve their already stellar roster in the coming months. With enough salary cap space to make things interesting and draft capital to make key moves well into April, it seems that the defending Super Bowl champions are destined to make this offseason particularly special.

Here is a look at the latest Chiefs news that should have the entire kingdom abuzz on March 10th:

Free agents the Chiefs can sign who don’t count against compensatory pick formula

There are already a number of free agents that the #Chiefs can sign who won’t count against the compensatory pick formula for 2024.

The Kansas City Chiefs could find themselves playing a game within the game of free agency this year.

Orlando Brown Jr., Mecole Hardman and Juan Thornhill are all expected to have robust markets when free agency opens next week. It’s very possible that all three of the players sign lucrative contracts that qualify toward the compensatory pick formula in 2024. If that’s the case, Chiefs GM Brett Veach will likely look to avoid signing compensable free agents who cancel out any compensatory picks earned.

In order to avoid sitting on their hands too long, the Chiefs could prioritize adding from the pool of players who have been released as salary cap casualties. Right now, that list includes 20 players and it could grow even larger by Wednesday, March 15.

Below is an up-to-date list of the players who’ve been released:

Mark Glowinski could net Colts a 2023 compensatory pick

The Colts may receive a 2023 compensatory pick with Mark Glowinski going to the Giants.

The Indianapolis Colts may be entitled to a compensatory pick in the 2023 NFL draft after right guard Mark Glowinski agreed to a three-year deal with the New York Giants on Monday.

Since we’re just getting started in the legal tampering period with free agency officially starting on Wednesday, this is subject to change. For now, though, the Colts may be getting a sixth-round compensatory pick in 2023, according to Nick Korte of Over The Cap.

If the Colts wind up being more aggressive with their signings, it could cancel out this projected compensatory pick. The Colts are still expected to see many of their pending free agents hit the market so how this all shakes out this remains to be seen.

But the loss of Glowinski will be notable. This may give Danny Pinter the chance to earn the starting role at right guard while Chris Reed and Matt Pryor still have the chance to be re-signed.

In a 2023 draft class where the Colts already have an extra pick on Day 2 thanks to the Carson Wentz trade, Indy may be in line to add another selection thanks to the compensatory formula.

Chiefs projected to receive 1 compensatory pick in 2022 NFL draft so far

The Kansas City Chiefs have done a good job navigating this offseason as it relates to compensatory picks.

The Kansas City Chiefs have done a good job navigating the 2021 free agency period as it relates to compensatory draft picks. So far, the team is projected to receive a seventh-round compensatory pick in the 2022 NFL draft despite signing five free agents from other teams and losing just two of their own.

According to OverTheCap’s Nick Korte, the Chiefs have lost two qualifying free agents in Sammy Watkins ($5 million) and Tanoh Kpassagnon ($2.3 million). Meanwhile, the team only gained a single qualifying free agent in Joe Thuney. Right now, Kpassagnon’s contract is the one projected to net Kansas City a seventh-round pick in 2022.

The Chiefs signed other players like Blake Bell, Kyle Long and Austin Blythe, but their contracts weren’t large enough to qualify for a compensatory pick. Recently signed DT Jarran Reed doesn’t count toward the compensatory pick formula because he was released by the Seahawks.

Kansas City could be due for more compensatory picks in 2022 as they still have several free agents available who could sign with other teams. LB Damien Wilson, for instance, took a visit with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday. Players like Austin Reiter, Bashaud Breeland, Mike Pennel and Le’Veon Bell have had pretty quiet markets so far, but they too could fetch contracts that would qualify toward the compensatory pick formula. At the same time, there are players like Alex Okafor, who wouldn’t count toward the compensatory pick formula even if he signed a deal that would otherwise qualify him for it.

Now, obviously, a seventh-round draft pick isn’t all that valuable. If the right player becomes available for the Chiefs in free agency, I fully expect them to sign that player without hesitating about canceling out that projected compensatory draft pick. At the same time, the front office seems to be making moves cognizant of the fact that they could still earn a few more compensatory picks in the late wave of the 2021 free agency period.

Broncos might not be able to get a high comp pick for Chris Harris in 2021

The Broncos aren’t expected to get an early-round compensatory draft pick for losing Chris Harris.

Chris Harris has agreed to sign with the Chargers, which is bad news for the Broncos in more ways than one.

Because he signed a deal averaging just $8.5 million per year, Harris is not projected to fetch an early-round compensatory draft pick in 2021, according to Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com.

The league awards compensatory picks to teams who lost more in free agency than they gained the previous offseason.

Last year, Denver offered Harris a three-year deal that averaged $12 million per season. Harris turned that offer down and, as Korte noted, it ended up hurting both parties.

Harris had to settle for an average of $3.5 million less per season and the Broncos won’t be eligible for a high-round comp pick for losing him. Instead, Harris’ contract is projected to be worth a fifth-round comp pick, according to OTC. Denver might not even get that, either.

As it stands now, the addition of offensive lineman Graham Glasgow is projected to cancel out the loss of Harris, according to OTC’s cancellation chart. Depending on who else the Broncos lose in free agency, the team might not get a comp pick for Harris at all.

We are tracking all of Denver’s free agency moves here.

Chargers’ updated draft order following compensatory picks

The Los Angeles Chargers were not awarded a compensatory pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Los Angeles Chargers weren’t awarded any compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s not going to affect the order of their selections.

As 15 teams were awarded additional picks in the draft, the Bolts’ draft order on Day 3 will change from what it was earlier this offseason.

Here’s an updated draft order for the Chargers in the 2020 NFL Draft:

  • Round 1, No. 6
  • Round 2, No. 37
  • Round 3, No. 71
  • Round 4, No. 112 (Previous: No. 102)
  • Round 5, No. 151 (Previous: No. 133)
  • Round 6, No. 186 (Previous: No. 166)
  • Round 7, No. 220 (Previous: No. 197)

It was speculated that Los Angeles was going to receive a compensatory draft pick for the loss of wide receiver Tyrell Williams, who signed with the Raiders last offseason. But the signings of linebacker Thomas Davis and quarterback Tyrod Taylor cancelled it out.

Seahawks awarded 3 compensatory picks in NFL draft

The Seattle Seahawks now have 11 picks in the 2020 NFL draft after adding third, fourth and sixth round compensatory picks.

The Seattle Seahawks have been awarded three compensatory picks in the 2020 NFL draft after the final list was announced by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks now have a new third, fourth and sixth round pick in 2020, giving them 11 overall picks and a chance to add significant depth to their roster.

The picks are No. 101, No. 144 and No. 214 overall.

The Seahawks did not receive any comp picks in 2019, but still managed to trade their way into 11 draft picks. Now, with 11 already at their disposal, the team has more flexibility to either trade picks to move up in the draft (if they see someone they want) or to continue their tradition of trading for more picks, potentially collecting as many as 15 new players via the draft.

The last time Seattle had comp picks was 2017, when they used two third round selections on defensive tackle Nazair Jones and wide receiver Amara Darboh.

Joey Hunt, a sixth rounder in 2016, was also a compensatory pick selection.

The Seahawks have roughly six weeks until the NFL draft, and with 11 picks in tow they have plenty of work to do to put together the best possible roster before the start of the 2020 season.

NFL comp picks 2020: Redskins get 4th-round draft selection

The Redskins have been given a fourth-round pick as compensation for losing Jamison Crowder in free agency last season.

The NFL announced on Tuesday that the Washington Redskins will receive a 4th-round compensatory draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, helping to bolster their relatively thin stock of selections this April’s draft.

The pick is coming to Washington by way of Jamison Crowder, who the Redskins lost in free agency to the New York Jets in 2019.

Unsure of how the compensatory draft picks work, and why they are awarded? Check out this explainer from Over The Cap:

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire. The number of picks a team can receive equals the net loss of compensatory free agents, up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a secret formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed is covered by the formula.

So, in the Redskins case, the NFL is rewarding them with a fourth-round draft pick in order to help alleviate the loss of Crowder last season. In comparison, the New York Giants were awarded a third-round pick for the loss of Landon Collins, who signed with the Redskins.

The value of an additional mid-round pick can not be understated, as the Redskins are without a second-round pick due to the trade for Montez Sweat in 2019. Look for Washington to fill a major need with the addition os this compensatory pick.

CBS Mock Draft: Longhorns Receiver Heading To New England

In the latest CBS Sports mock draft, the New England Patriots select Texas Longhorns wide receiver Devin Duvernay in the third round.

CBS Sports writer R.J. White recently released his latest 2020 Mock Draft that including the first three rounds. In recent mock draft roundups, the Texas Longhorns typically didn’t find themselves on the list before round four until White penciled in a top Longhorns’ pass catcher to the New England Patriots.

Projected comp pick. The Patriots are well-positioned to take advantage of the depth in this receiver class in Round 3, where they’re expected to have multiple compensatory picks. Duvernay is a guy who can stretch the defense.

The New England Patriots are in desperate need for weapon on the outside, especially if they want veteran quarterback and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady to return in 2020. The Patriots’ top pass catcher Julia Edelman will be 34 going into next season. The team added N’Keal Harry out of Arizona State in last year’s draft but he contributed just 105 yards on 12 receptions.

Duvernay’s addition would give the Patriots a legit number two target as they try and develop Harry into the top wide receiver role. Behind Edelman, the Pats top receiver was running back James White. Duv helps take the pressure away from not having the tight end threat New England has had over the years in Rob Gronkowski.

The Patriots have two wide receivers that are scheduled to be free agents in Phillip Dorsett and Matthew Slater. Dorsett accounted for 397 yards and five touchdowns while Slater didn’t record a reception. Duvernay alleviates the loss of Dorsett with tremendous upside at the position.
