Colts’ player of the game vs. Jaguars: RB Jonathan Taylor

RB Jonathan Taylor is the Colts’ player of the game in the Week 10 win over the Jaguars.

Another week, another solid performance by the stud second-year running back. The Indianapolis Colts picked up a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a game where Jonathan Taylor went over 100 rushing yards for the fifth time this season and the eighth time of his young and promising career.

He finished the day with 116 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding six receptions for 10 yards. It was clear early on that Taylor was going to have a huge game, especially after a big 34-yard gain on the first play of the game.

However, the Jaguars were able to make adjustments and really shut down Taylor and the Colts offense for much of the second half. That can’t happen against tougher competition that will capitalize off those wasted drives.

The formula for the Colts is simple. Give the ball to Taylor, dominate the line of scrimmage, and good things will come. Having an impactful run game helps in the passing game as well, which we saw today against the Jags.

The Colts will have a much tougher test next week when they travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills. If Indy wants to come away with a win, it’s safe to say Taylor will have to be the centerpiece of the game plan.

The Jaguars are coming off a surprising win over the Bills last weekend as their defense came to play behind Josh Allen. Trevor Lawrence will need to put points on the board if they want to hang around with the Colts. Meanwhile, Indianapolis is coming off a double-digit win over the Jets last week as Carson Wentz has performed well as of late.

4 Jaguars the Colts must game plan for in Week 1

Keep an eye on these Jaguars in Week 1.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a busy offseason after trading away or releasing a large portion of their team. Only a small percentage of players still remain from their improbable 2017 AFC Championship berth.

While their talent is limited, they still have a lot of players who can have success in the NFL. This team is young and is building something for the future. Regardless, they should not be overlooked.

>>>MORE: Thursday’s injury report<<<

As the Colts head south to TIAA Bank Field this weekend, here are four Jaguars they must game plan for in Week 1:

QB Gardner Minshew II

Minshew is a guy that is tough to root against even for a Colts fan. The second-year quarterback out of Washington State has quickly become a popular young talent in the NFL. His future in Jacksonville is up in the air, which gives him all the motivation to have a big 2020 season.

After finishing with 3,271 passing yards and 21 touchdowns in just 14 games played, Minshew has the ability to put up points. With a young and talented receiving corps around him, the Colts will have to make him uncomfortable in the pocket to have success on Sunday.

The hope is that new defensive tackle DeForest Buckner can apply some pressure from the interior, but they will have to move Minshew off his spot early.

>>>MORE: Colts vs. Jags: Who has the edge?<<<

Colts’ player of the game vs. Jaguars: RB Marlon Mack

Marlon Mack had another strong game.

In a disappointing finale to a disappointing season, the Indianapolis Colts offense shut down once again in the second half against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Turnovers and missed opportunities really cost them a win against a struggling Jacksonville team.

Marlon Mack had an impressive game on the ground, his first in what seems like half the season. He totaled 77 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. This was Mack’s third career game with multiple rushing touchdowns and his first two-score game of the season.

Mack and the Colts gashed the Jaguars for 264 yards in their previous matchup this year but did not find the same success today. Though they were efficient when given the chances.

With this game, Mack had 1,091 yards on the season which was a career-high and the most rushing yards by a Colts running back since Edgerrin James in 2005.

Mack makes a case for team MVP of 2019 by developing a run game that seemed to be the focal point of this offense. If Mack can stay healthy for a full 16 games, this offense can be very dangerous heading into 2020.

Prediction

Colts 23, Jaguars 17

Moneyline (?)

I am not crazy about the value, but COLTS -189 is a relatively safe bet. Aside from a random second-half comeback against the Raiders in Week 15, the Jaguars have been essentially a no-show for the past seven weeks. They are 1-6 straight up and against the spread, while just scoring an average 12.7 points per game with an average margin of loss of -17.8 PPG in those seven games.

Don’t you get the feeling that the Colts would like to end the season at .500 after being left for dead by a lot of people in the media when former star QB Andrew Luck abruptly retired just a week or so before the season started? Expect the Colts to end 2019 on a high note.

Against the Spread (?)

The COLTS -3.5 (-115) is too low of a number to pass on. The strengths and weaknesses of the two squads align perfectly for the Colts to have their way with the Jaguars. The Colts rank fourth in the NFL in rushing yards per game (133.2) while the Jaguars defense ranks 28th in rushing yards allowed per game (139.8). Also, don’t expect the Jaguars to capitalize on red-zone appearances: Jaguars rank 31st in offensive red zone scoring percentage (38.1) and the Colts rank eight in defensive red zone scoring % (51.1). TAKE THE COLTS -3.5 (-115).

Over/Under (?)

PASS on the 43.5 TOTAL. Unders are trending in Jaguars home games (9-3 in their last 12 home games). And the best version of the Colts are when they can grind games out by feeding their ball carriers RB Marlon Mack and RB Jordan Wilkins. Since we are on the Colts -3.5 and -189, we are hoping the best version of Indianapolis shows up in Week 17 (though Wilkins will not play). Given the spotty nature of rookie quarterbacks, especially Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew, and a 22nd-ranked Colts pass defense, the over/under is a stay away.
