Why Jacksonville Jaguars Will Win

The Jaguars have the No. 1 pick. They have Trevor Lawrence, they might have Urban Meyer, or Dabo Swinney, or any one of a slew of coaches who might want to take over with a generational talent coming in at quarterback. They can turn it loose and try to screw up the Colts.

For all of the problems the Jaguars are having, they’re not as bad as Indianapolis is dealing with against anyone who can throw a forward pass. All of a sudden, the defense that was so nasty throughout the year is getting touched through the air, giving up over 300 yards in each of the last four games and in four of the last five.

Mike Glennon hasn’t been too bad when he’s had his chances, but …

Why Indianapolis Colts Will Win

The Jaguars are missing way too many parts with RB James Robinson out, DJ Chark and a few receivers not around, and the offense isn’t likely to do much after struggling to score over the last three games.

Indianapolis has to care. After choking away last week’s game to Pittsburgh, this will be a fully-focused Colt team that should be fine from the start and will be balanced against a Jaguar defense that’s getting bombed on.

Jonathan Taylor has running wild, the run defense has been a rock, and it shouldn’t take too many points to put this away.

What’s Going To Happen

Indianapolis has to win and then hope for Baltimore, Cleveland or Miami to lose. Part One won’t be a problem, and either Buffalo will take care of Miami and/or Pittsburgh will stop Cleveland.

Here’s the concern – the Colts will know where they stand. If Baltimore, Cleveland and Miami all win in the early games, will they show the fight needed once they play in the afternoon if they’re out of the playoffs?

There won’t be any issues. The Colts will take care of business fast and will get in after getting a little help.

Indianapolis (0-0) vs Jacksonville (0-0) Game Preview

Why Indianapolis Will Win

Does Jacksonville have any players left?

In a true Tank for Trevor (Lawrence) campaign, the Jaguars are dumping players left and right for future draft picks in a developmental season that appears to be destined to finish with the No. 1 overall selection. The focus might be on the Colt offense with Philip Rivers under center, but the improved defensive front should take over early on.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 1

Why Jacksonville Will Win

So what on this thing works? The defensive line should be a positive as the season goes on, with a few terrific young players to built the entire franchise around. Drafting K’Lavon Chaisson to go along with Josh Allen from last year’s class gives the Jaguars a dynamic pair to get excited about, and they’re going to be turned loose to get to Rivers.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis
This is going to be interesting. Marlon Mack is a proven fantasy talent, but Taylor is the special type of back to work the entire offense around. However, at Wisconsin, Taylor had issues with fumbling around the goal line. Will he get the short-yardage chances early on?

What’s Going To Happen

Jacksonville is still a professional football franchise with professional football players. On the plus side, this group can truly do the Nobody Believes In Us thing, and the next men up are going to be extra motivated. They’ll be plucky, but the Indianapolis offense will take over in the second half.

Neither team is headed to the playoffs and the only postseason implications are if the Titans lose, then a Colts loss could potentially help the Oakland Raiders or Pittsburgh Steelers earn a playoff berth.

Prediction

Colts 23, Jaguars 17

Moneyline (?)

I am not crazy about the value, but COLTS -189 is a relatively safe bet. Aside from a random second-half comeback against the Raiders in Week 15, the Jaguars have been essentially a no-show for the past seven weeks. They are 1-6 straight up and against the spread, while just scoring an average 12.7 points per game with an average margin of loss of -17.8 PPG in those seven games.

Don’t you get the feeling that the Colts would like to end the season at .500 after being left for dead by a lot of people in the media when former star QB Andrew Luck abruptly retired just a week or so before the season started? Expect the Colts to end 2019 on a high note.

Against the Spread (?)

The COLTS -3.5 (-115) is too low of a number to pass on. The strengths and weaknesses of the two squads align perfectly for the Colts to have their way with the Jaguars. The Colts rank fourth in the NFL in rushing yards per game (133.2) while the Jaguars defense ranks 28th in rushing yards allowed per game (139.8). Also, don’t expect the Jaguars to capitalize on red-zone appearances: Jaguars rank 31st in offensive red zone scoring percentage (38.1) and the Colts rank eight in defensive red zone scoring % (51.1). TAKE THE COLTS -3.5 (-115).

Over/Under (?)

PASS on the 43.5 TOTAL. Unders are trending in Jaguars home games (9-3 in their last 12 home games). And the best version of the Colts are when they can grind games out by feeding their ball carriers RB Marlon Mack and RB Jordan Wilkins. Since we are on the Colts -3.5 and -189, we are hoping the best version of Indianapolis shows up in Week 17 (though Wilkins will not play). Given the spotty nature of rookie quarterbacks, especially Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew, and a 22nd-ranked Colts pass defense, the over/under is a stay away.
