NFL Week 16 playoff, division-clinching scenarios

Check out what teams can clinch playoff berths and division titles in Week 16 and how it can happen.

The Arizona Cardinals are out of playoff contention but Cardinals fans can pay attention to what is happening in the rest of the league.

Let’s look at the different Week 16 scenarios there are for teams to clinch postseason berths or to win their divisions.

NFL postseason scenarios: Every possible permutation for Week 18

There’s a lot on the line as the NFL’s regular season comes to a close. Here is every possible playoff permutation for Week 18.

The final week of any NFL regular season leaves us with all kinds of postseason possibilities to be decided, and never more so than in the 2022 regular season. Due to the cancellation of last Monday’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals because of Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest on the field, the NFL had to create multiple stipulations in order to try and maintain competitive balance in a league that had two teams with one fewer game in the books.

We’ll get into all that in the scenarios below. Suffice to say, there are a bunch of teams with everything on the line in Week 18. Week 18 started Saturday, with the Kansas City Chiefs clinching the AFC’s one-seed, and the Jacksonville Jaguars clinching the AFC South, and the AFC’s four-seed.

Things are less complicated in the NFC. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have clinched the four-seed, and they’ll do so even if they go into the playoffs with a losing record. The New York Giants have already clinched the six-seed no matter what happens in their game with the Philadelphia Eagles… but as you’ll see, the Eagles can move anywhere from the one-seed to the five-seed based on what they, and several other NFC teams, do on Sunday. By the time we get to who can win the NFC’s two-seed, your head may be ready to explode.

In order to provide as much clarity as possible, here is every possible playoff scenario in both conferences for all non-eliminated teams.

2022 NFL playoffs: Who can qualify and how in Week 17?

Check out all of the NFL playoff scenarios that exist or Week 17.

The playoff picture is becoming clearer, but there still remains much to be sorted out for the 2022 NFL playoffs.

The Buffalo Bills clinched the AFC East and will host a home playoff game, as will the Kansas City Chiefs. Who is the number one seed has yet to be determined.

As for the rest of the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Los Angeles Chargers are assured a ticket to the postseason.

On the NFC side, the only division winners are the Minnesota Vikings (NFC North) and San Francisco 49ers (NFC West).

The Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles are the only playoff qualifiers outside of clinching a division in the NFC. Both are still vying for the NFC East, which has the added benefit of gaining the No. 1 seed.

Here are the playoff scenarios for Week 17.

Win-and-in: Chargers will clinch playoff berth with victory over Colts

The Chargers have not made the playoffs since 2018.

There are still three weeks remaining in the regular season, but the Chargers can punch their ticket to the playoffs in Week 16.

Los Angeles must defeat the Colts on Monday night for that to happen.

The Bolts found themselves in this win-and-in situation after the Jets, Patriots and Raiders all lost their perspective games this past week.

L.A. is currently sitting with a 92% chance of making the playoffs. If they lose to Indianapolis, their chances drop to 86%.

The Chargers have not made the playoffs since 2018.

Should Los Angeles win and get into the playoffs, it would then play to determine seeding. As of now, the Bolts are the sixth seed, but they have a chance to get the fifth seed.

The Philadelphia Eagles similarly have a playoff berth, but can secure the division and No. 1 seed in the NFC this week.

The Minnesota Vikings won the NFC North and will get a home playoff game. The same can be said for the San Francisco 49ers and their winning the NFC West.

The Dallas Cowboys are also in the postseason.

Here is a look at the scenarios for playoff qualification and more in Week 16.

The middle of December means the unleashing of the playoff-clinching multiverse.

The Philadelphia Eagles already clinched a playoff berth with a victory over the New York Giants in Week 14. The NFC East and the No. 1 overall seed in the conference can’t be decided just yet.
