LSU baseball’s recruiting class ranks 5th in the nation, per Collegiate Baseball

The Tigers are looking to defend their title after adding one of the nation’s top recruiting classes.

LSU baseball coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] is looking to repeat as national champion in 2024, and despite losing a number of key players like [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], Johnson is reloading the roster with a talented group.

The Tigers added a 20-man recruiting class this fall, including 13 high school signees, six Division I transfers and a junior college transfer. That group ranks fifth in the nation, according to Collegiate Baseball.

LSU’s class is headlined by [autotag]Cam Johnson[/autotag], who becomes the highest-ranked Tigers recruit to reach campus. The No. 11 overall prospect and No. 2 left-handed pitcher in his high school class, Johnson was a 20th-round pick but opted to enroll at LSU instead.

This is the 16th time in the last 17 years LSU has had its class rank in the top 10. The Tigers’ 2022 class ranked No. 1 according to Collegiate Baseball.

Arkansas, UCLA, Tennessee and Florida were the only schools that finished with a higher recruiting ranking.

Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes earn national Player of the Week honors

LSU boasts two of the top talents in college baseball.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] have been named National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after they had an incredible week.

Crews was 10-for-16 (.625 batting average) with four homers, nine RBI, and nine runs scored as the Tigers went 3-1 with a series win over Arkansas and a midweek win against Central Arkansas.

Skenes went seven innings against Arkansas as he gave up one run and racked up 12 strikeouts with 2 hits and three walks. The loss did not count towards his record as he remains 5-0 with a 0.59 ERA. He will be back in action Friday night against Tennessee at Alex Box Stadium.

LSU will face Grambling in their mid-week matchup tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. Then, LSU will welcome the Tennessee Volunteers to Baton Rouge for a heated weekend series.

The Vols are coming off of a weekend sweep of Texas A&M and ranked No. 11 in the country.

Tennessee top-five in Collegiate Baseball 2023 preseason poll

Tennessee baseball is ranked top-five in the Collegiate Baseball 2023 preseason poll.

Opening day for Tennessee baseball is slated for Feb. 17.

The Vols will play in the 2023 MLB4 Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona Feb. 17-19. The MLB4 Tournament field will consist of Tennessee, Arizona, Fresno State, Michigan and San Diego.

Tennessee’s 2023 baseball schedule

Tennessee won the Southeastern Conference East division for the second consecutive season, the league regular-season and tournament championships in 2022.

The Vols were a No. 1 overall national seed in the NCAA Tournament, winning the Knoxville regional and advancing to the Knoxville super regional.

Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll for 10 consecutive weeks (March 28-May 30) during the 2022 season.

Collegiate Baseball released its 2023 preseason poll presented by Big League Chew on Tuesday. Collegiate Baseball’s top-10 teams in the 2023 preseason poll are listed below.

Top-Ten’s All Around For Razorback Baseball

Following the sweep of Kentucky, Arkansas has caught the attention of all major polls. Click to see where the Hogs are ranked this week.

Following a weekend sweep of Kentucky where they outscored the Wildcats, 18-6, the Arkansas Razorbacks are starting to gain respect across all national polls.

The Razorbacks stand alone in the SEC Western Division at 3-0 and have won an impressive 11 games in a row while sitting at 16-3 overall. Offensive production is at a season-high with three batters hitting over .300, and seven batters with at least 10 RBI. Pitching has played a dominant role in recent wins, as all three weekend starters have at least 25 strikeouts in over 25 innings of work.

Here’s a look at what the national polls are saying about the Razorbacks:

Here’s where Gators are ranked in Collegiate Baseball’s preseason poll

It’s not the No. 1 start the Gators had last year, but still a solid preseason ranking.

There are still nearly two months before the college baseball season gets underway, but it is never too soon for preseason rankings. As such, Collegiate Baseball released its preseason poll for the 2022 campaign on Monday, with the Florida Gators earning a top-10 spot at No. 6 in the nation.

This year’s ranking is a bit more modest than last season’s start perched atop the poll at No. 1, which was largely based on Florida’s 16-1 record over the COVID-shortened 2020 season — with the one loss coming in the final game against FSU. However, the 2021 team fell apart early on and never completely found its footing after a frustrating season for Kevin O’Sullivan’s squad, resulting in an early exit from the NCAA tournament.

The Southeastern Conference packs a punch in this poll, with the Vanderbilt Commodores and LSU Tigers sitting at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, ahead of the Gators. The Mississippi State Bulldogs are not too far behind at No. 9,  while the Ole Miss Rebels and Arkansas Razorbacks are further down the line at No. 19 and No. 20, respectively, to give the SEC six of the top 25 teams.

Dillon Dingler named third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball

Ohio State baseball’s Dillon Dingler was named a 3rd team All-American by Collegiate Baseball this past week.

The 2020 NCAA baseball season may not have lasted that long, but that didn’t stop some awards and recognition from being handed out. Collegiate Baseball recognized its All-American teams Tuesday, and Ohio State catcher Dillon Dingler was named to the third team according to a release from the university.

Dingler becomes the 54th All-American in OSU baseball history. joining Andrew Mango and Dominic Canzone from last season.

In the short season before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, Dingler was tied with Indiana’s Grant Richardson for the lead in the Big Ten with five home runs. His slugging percentage of .760 was good for second in the conference and 23rd nationally.

For the year, Dingler led Buckeye regulars with a .340 (17-for-50) batting average to go along with a team-high four doubles, a triple, five home runs, 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored. In the Buckeyes’ win at North Florida March 10, Dingler became the first Buckeye in three years to hit three long balls in one game.

It’s too bad we were robbed of watching him play even further in 2020.

Bryce Elder named second team All-American

SP Bryce Elder was named to the Collegiate Baseball 2020 All-American second-team. Elder had four starts, going 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA for UT.

Before Texas’ baseball season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Longhorns were 14-3 and in the midst of a four-game winning streak. Big 12 play was just a week away and Texas was one of the favorites to win the conference.

Starting pitcher Bryce Elder was one of the stars for the Longhorns, being named to the Collegiate Baseball 2020 All-American second-team. Elder had four starts, going 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA.

His best game of the season came in the first game of the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic against No. 11 LSU. Playing at Minute Maid Park, Elder went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits. Adding 10 strikeouts, it was his second double-digit strikeout effort, also having 11 against Boise State.

While no Big 12 player made the first team, three others made the second team along with Elder. Relief pitchers Haylen Green of TCU and Micah Dallas of Texas Tech made it, while second baseman Brian Klien from Texas Tech was the only positional player in the team.
