Denver Broncos waive former Michigan State wide receiver Cody White

According to a reporter from the Denver Post, the Broncos are waiving former Spartan Cody White.

Man, I know we have all had challenges this year, but Cody White has had a rough six months from a professional standpoint. The former Spartan left Michigan State early to join the NFL Draft, but due to the pandemic, wasn’t exactly able to show off his skills in workouts as much as I’m sure he would’ve liked.

White went undrafted and has since bounced from team to team, trying to find a landing spot. His latest tryout was with the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, according to Broncos beat writer Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post, White’s tenure with the Broncos has come to an end after two weeks and he did not make their 53-man roster.

White will now continue to find a landing spot during an unconventional offseason.

Former Michigan State Football WR Cody White signs with the Denver Broncos

Former Michigan State wideout Cody White has signed a deal with the Denver Broncos.

Michigan State Football lost a great player when wide receiver Cody White decided to bet on himself and head to the NFL after his junior season. While that decision didn’t pay off on draft day, it looks like the former Spartan has found a new home as the Denver Broncos announced on Sunday that they have signed Cody White.

White took the leap to the NFL after a very productive junior season where he caught 66 passes for 922 yards and 6 touchdowns and was one of the standouts in a struggling offense.

Cody White isn’t the first undrafted Michigan State wide receiver to end up on the Broncos in recent memory. Bennie Fowler was also signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent and managed to parlay that signing into a long career.

Report: Broncos sign WR Cody White

The Broncos have signed rookie wide receiver Cody White.

The Denver Broncos have signed wide receiver Cody White, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

White (6-3, 215 pounds) played college football at Michigan State and opted to forego his senior season to enter the 2020 NFL Draft. After going unselected in April’s draft, White signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a college free agent.

White didn’t survive early cuts in Kansas City when the Chiefs trimmed their roster from 90 players down to 80 players last month. White then landed with the New York Giants. New York waived White on Aug. 16.

In three seasons with the Spartans, White caught 143 passes for 1,967 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 63 yards and another score. White posted college career-highs in catches (66) receiving yards (922) and receiving touchdowns (six) as a junior last fall.

Denver likely wanted to add more depth at wide receiver with KJ Hamler (hamstring) and Juwann Winfree (groin) battling injuries. White will join a room of receivers that already includes Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick, DaeSean Hamilton and Diontae Spencer, among others.

Giants waive wide receiver Cody White

The New York Giants have waived wide receiver Cody White and claimed wide receiver C.J. Board off of waivers.

[jwplayer LyAjrlcU-ThvAeFxT]

The New York Giants claimed wide receiver C.J. Board off of waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars over the weekend, which means they needed to clear room on their roster.

In order to do that, the team officially waived wide receiver Cody White on Sunday, which came slightly more than a week after they signed him.

White went undrafted out of Michigan State back in April, but signed with the Kansas City Chiefs shortly after the draft. He was waived in late July as the team trimmed their roster to 80.

The 6-foot-3 White gambled by leaving college a year early and it obviously didn’t pay off, but he’s been getting looks across the league and is likely to land on his feet — perhaps even back with the Giants down the line.

Giants waive TE Kyle Markway, LB Mark McLaurin

The New York Giants have waived TE Kyle Markway and LB Mark McLaurin to make room for WR Cody White and OT Jackson Dennis.

The New York Giants may not have been able to get veteran cornerback Ross Cockrell under contract on Tuesday, but they were able to sign rookie wide receiver Cody White and rookie offensive tackle Jackson Dennis, each of whom visited over the weekend.

While the additions of White and Dennis were expected, it remained unclear who the Giants would part with in order to clear up the necessary roster space.

That question has now been answered.

The Giants announced on Tuesday that tight end Kyle Markway and linebacker Mark McLaurin have been waived.

The Giants signed Markway shortly after he went undrafted out of South Carolina in April. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end was a long-shot to make the team due to the crowded nature at his position, and he wasn’t helped by an extremely limited college career. Markway had missed two seasons due to injury and had just six receptions prior to his senior season.

Like Markway, the Giants signed McLaurin as an undrafted free agent, but did so in 2019 with the intend of making him a “moneybacker” in James Bettcher’s then-defense. The Mississippi State product was injured early in training camp last year and spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve.

Former Chiefs WR Cody White, OG Jovahn Fair sign with new teams

Two recently released Chiefs have found new teams.

A pair of players who were previously on the Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason roster have signed with new teams.

The New York Giants have added WR Cody White, while OG Jovahn Fair has signed with the Cleveland Browns. Both White and Fair were among the 18 undrafted free agents that Kansas City signed after the 2020 NFL Draft. Fair was waived by the Chiefs in late July, along with five other players in an effort to trim the roster down to 80 players, which is the new offseason limit agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA. White was waived with a non-football injury designation along with Javaris Davis, who briefly caught on with the Dolphins but was waived with the same designation.

White was atypical compared to the receivers that the Chiefs usually have on the team. He’s long and tall but doesn’t create much separation with his speed and route-running. That made him expendable in Kansas City when the changes to the offseason roster were first announced.

Fair also wasn’t the average offensive lineman that you see in Kansas City. While he started all four years at guard at Temple, at 6-2 and 310 pounds, he’s a bit undersized for what the Chiefs usually like at the position. That too made him expendable in the offseason altered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The players are both late additions for their respective teams, so that means they’ll have be fighting an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. It’s possible that both are in line to earn a practice squad spot for the 2020 season.

Report: Giants met with Jackson Dennis, Cody White

The New York Giants visited with three players on Saturday, including WR Cody White and OL Jackson Dennis.

New York Giants players were off on Saturday, so it provided the team an opportunity to check in on some free agents who could potentially be added to the roster.

Among those players was veteran cornerback Ross Cockrell, who is expected to be signed once he passes his physical and is tested for COVID-19.

However, Cockrell wasn’t the only player getting a look from the Giants on Saturday. Additionally, wide receiver Cody White and offensive tackle Jackson Dennis were listed as having made “visits” on the NFL’s transaction wire.

White, who went undrafted out of Michigan State back in April, signed with the Kansas City Chiefs shortly after the draft, but was waived in late July as the team trimmed their roster to 80.

The 6-foot-3 White gambled by leaving college a year early and it obviously didn’t pay off, but the 6-foot-3 receiver who was highly recruited out of High School will certainly get some additional looks this year. His size is enough to intrigue NFL teams, but his 4.66 40-yard dash time may scare some teams off.

Dennis, meanwhile, signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in April, but was waived in late July when the team made necessary roster cuts.

The 6-foot-6, 308-pound Dennis was a solid contributor at Holy Cross, appearing in 40 games with 24 starts over the course of his college career. In 2019, he made 12 starts at right tackle and was considered one of the team’s most consistent players.

Former Michigan State receiver Cody White waived by Kansas City

White is the second Spartan rookie to be waived this offseason.

Cody White’s stay in Kansas City didn’t last long.

Shortly after rookies reported for camp, the former MSU receiver was waived by the reigning Super Bowl champions with a non-football injury designation. White was signed by the Chiefs after going un-drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. He is the second former Spartan receiver cut by the Chiefs this offseason, with Felton Davis III being the other. Former MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke was waived by the New England Patriots Sunday night as well.

White left MSU after compiling 1,967 receiving yards and 12 TDs across three seasons.

Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Michigan State WR Cody White

How does Michigan State WR Cody White fit with the Kansas City Chiefs?

White was a star football player at Walled Lake Western High School in Walled Lake, Michigan. He played eight different positions in high school amassing over 3,000 all-purpose yards during his career. He played everything from receiver to placekicker. His standout performance saw him selected for a number of different All-Pro teams including USA TODAY’s All-USA Michigan team.

White was recruited by over a dozen different colleges out of high school as a receiver but chose to stick close to home and go with Michigan State. In three seasons with the Spartans, White racked up the stats to finish seventh in Michigan State history in receptions (143), twelfth in receiving yards (1,967) and he tied for sixteenth in receiving touchdowns (12).

Stats:

2017: 13 games played. 35 catches for 490 yards and four touchdowns. Four carries for 19 yards. Seven punt returns for 22 yards.

2018: 9 games played. 42 catches for 555 yards and two touchdowns. One carry for 22 yards and a touchdown. Five punt returns for 23 yards.

2019: 13 games played. 66 catches for 922 yards and six touchdowns. Six carries for 22 yards. Seven punt returns for 40 yards.

Fit with the Chiefs:

White is different from the prototypical Chiefs receiver prospect. He’s doesn’t run a blazing-fast 40-yard dash, like their starting receivers. He is really good off the line of scrimmage and does a good job running routes. He’s not going to create a ton of separation from the defender in coverage, but instead, he wins with strong hands and physicality at the catch point. He also boasts an impressive catch radius and tracking abilities.

Ultimately, White is a big target and he did a good job getting open in Michigan State offense that wasn’t that great. They didn’t have other premium weapons around him and the quarterback play was subpar for most of his career. Regardless, White still managed to produce and show some promising traits.

He’s versatile and can line up all over the field and has experience playing the X receiver spot and in the slot. While he played punt returner at Michigan State, but I’m not sure that White has a future there in the NFL. He’s likely going to need to play on coverage units early in his career for Kansas City.
