Instant Analysis: Cowboys’ browned out as electric offense grounded in middle of game

24-fourth quarter points saved them, but this game got ugly fast.

The Dallas Cowboys were embarrassed in Week 4, getting drubbed at home 49-38 by the Cleveland Browns. 24-fourth quarter points saved them, but this game got ugly fast, as Dallas at one point trailed 41-14.

It was over when . . .

. . . noted Cowboy killer Odell Beckham Jr. took a reverse handoff 50-yards to score his third touchdown of the game. The score and subsequent two-point conversion was the deflating endpoint to the Cowboys comeback hopes, as Dak Prescott was intercepted near the Cleveland end zone on the next drive.

Game balls:

Game Ball No. 1: WR CeeDee Lamb

The rookie WR scored the first two touchdowns of his career, on a five-catch, 79-yard day. He also took one handoff (his third of the season), and returned three punts for 26-yards, continuing to cement himself as an integral part of the offense.

Game Ball No. 2: QB Dak Prescott

These types of performances ring hollow but still count nonetheless. One week after setting a career-high in pass attempts with 57, Prescott broke it again, completing 41 of 58 passes for a career-high 502 passing yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. He took three sacks and one lost fumble, playing behind a leaky offensive line that was shuffled mid-game for the second week in a row. Again forced to play catch-up, Prescott still completed several throws into tight spaces, and seemingly gave the Cowboys a chance they had no business having, coming within three points late.

Game Ball No. 3: DB Donovan Wilson

Wilson played his first defensive snaps of the season, recording 10 total tackles (one sack). He was inserted midway through the game after Dallas again received uninspired play from the backend of their secondary. He flashed with some big hits, but the Cowboys defense needs more playmakers to have any hope of being a complete team.

Key Stat: 135.42

After completing a 37-yard bomb to Beckham Jr. to get Cleveland’s scoring started, Jarvis Landry now has a career 135.42 career passer rating (109 yards on three completions, one touchdown). The Browns gashed the Dallas defense all game with misdirection and play-action, with this trick play being a sign of things to come.

Quick Hits:

  • Four weeks into the season and the Cowboys defense is trending in the wrong direction. Dallas entered the game with the ninth-most total yards allowed and then gave up 508 to the Cleveland freaking Browns. 307 yards were rushing, by far the most Dallas has given up in any game this season. Someone named D’Ernest Johnson led the Browns with 95 rushing yards on 13 attempts, and Kareem Hunt chipped in two touchdowns and 71 yards on 11 carries after taking over for an injured Nick Chubb.
  • The collective tackling from the Dallas defense was abysmal. The secondary continually allowed key completions to Beckham, Austin Hooper, and Landry, and couldn’t come up with a stop when the team needed it most.
  • DE DeMarcus Lawrence is still looking for this first sack of the season but was one of the few bright spots along the Cowboys defensive front. He recorded one of the four tackles for loss on the day for Dallas. The others were made by Wilson, Joe Thomas, and Trysten Hill.
  • Joe Looney was injured on the first play of the game and did not return. He was replaced by rookie Tyler Biadasz, who committed a false start later in the game. Terence Steele, who got the start at RT, was replaced mid-game for the second week in a row. Despite getting back Tyron Smith, the Cowboys offensive line is still figuring things out. Cleveland DE Myles Garrett had a big, game-changing effect this week.
  • After going ahead 14-7 with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Cowboys were outscored 34-0 over the next 34:44, not scoring again until early in the fourth quarter. Dallas has found themselves playing from behind in each game so far this season, which is obviously not a great situation to continually be in. They are one on-side kick recovery away from being 0-4 on the season.
  • The Cowboys play their first divisional game of the year in Week 5, taking on Jason Garrett and the New York Giants.

Buckeyes in the NFL: Browns’ Denzel Ward seals game against Cowboys with INT

With the Dallas Cowboys making a furious rally in the 4th quarter, Browns’ DB Denzel Ward intercepted a Dak Prescott pass to seal the win.

The Cleveland Browns got a huge victory against “America’s Team” on Sunday. They seem to be getting things together and now stand at 3-1 on the young season.

The offense was popping and the Browns got out to a big lead, but then Dallas began to reel things back in as the 4th quarter moved on. It looked like things were going to be a nip and tuck affair, one that Cleveland has found a way to lose in the past, but former Ohio State defensive back Denzel Ward wasn’t having it.

The Cowboys still would have needed another score, but they were on the doorstep at the 8-yard line about to score when Ward stepped in front of a Dak Prescott pass for a game-clinching interception with just 1:36 left in the game and the Browns up by 11. It sealed what could be a season-turning 49-38 victory in Big D.

Cleveland Browns are 3-1 for first time since 2001

The Cleveland Browns survived a Dallas Cowboys charge to advance to 3-1.

The Cleveland Browns are 3-1 for the first time since 2001. It should have been easier as they led Dallas 41-14 in the fourth quarter before allowing 24 straight points and making all of Ohio sweat.

Odell Beckham Jr. to the rescue with a 50-yard TD run and the final was 49-38.

How much has changed since the last time Cleveland had that mark after four games?

How about their quarterback in 2001 was one Tim Couch, who led the team to victories over the Lions, Jaguars, and Chargers after a season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The quarterbacks the 2001 Browns defeated to get to 3-1 were Ty Detmer, Jonathan Quinn, and Doug Flutie.

George W. Bush was the U.S. President.

The Baltimore Ravens thrashed the New York Giants in the Super Bowl earlier that year.

On Oct. 5, Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants broke the single-season home run record, with his 71st and 72nd home runs of the year.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield leads Browns to victory over the Dallas Cowboys

Former Oklahoma star Baker Mayfield led the Cleveland Browns to a 49-38 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4 of NFL action.

The win puts Cleveland at 3-1 on the season, and it’s the first time since 2001 the Browns have begun a season 3-1. It’s the third straight win for the Browns.

Mayfield completed 19 of 30 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns, Mayfield avoided mistakes and did not turn the ball over. It is the second straight game for Mayfield without an interception.

Once again, Cleveland was led by an outstanding running game. Starter Nick Chubb went down with a knee injury, but the Browns did not miss a beat, rushing for 307 yards and three touchdowns.

Cleveland averaged 7.7 yards per rushing attempt.

At 3-1, Cleveland is tied with Baltimore for second place in the AFC North, a half-game behind 3-0 Pittsburgh.

The Browns host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5.

Cowboys’ Lamb grabs second TD but Beckham bends score back to Browns

The Cowboys trail by 11 points with 3:25 to go in the game after back to back scores by Cowboys and Browns.

For those with high blood pressure, look away. The Dallas Cowboys  trailed 41-38 for a short period of time after another CeeDee Lamb touchdown catch from Dak Prescott. A successful two point conversion followed with an end around run by Amari Cooper.

Prescott has eclipsed 400 yards passing again. The Cowboys offense has not shown any shortage in points and yards but now leave it up to their defense to stand up one more time to give the Cowboys a chance to tie the game in a possible final series.

An unsuccessful squib onside kick set the Cleveland Browns up with field position at the 50 yard line.

The Cowboys immediately gave up a massive end around run by Odell Beckham Jr. to make it a two-score game again.

To make matters worse, Dallas blocked the extra point, but the ball was recovered by the Browns in the end zone to make it a two-point conversion and push the lead back to 11.

With just over 3:25 remaining, the Cowboys will try to add to their 24-point fourth quarter.

Watch: Odell Beckham Jr. runs 50 yards for TD

Odell Beckham Jr. burned the Cowboys in every way but throwing a pass.

The Cleveland Browns were flirting — more like courting — disaster.

A 41-14 lead had dwindled to three points in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys.

So, why not try some trickeration.

The play put the ball in the hands of Odell Beckham Jr., who scored his third TD of the game to make it 47-38. A two-point conversion made the gap 11. The final was 49-38.

Watch: Cowboys Tony Pollard, Dalton Schultz bring score close

The Dallas  Cowboys are somehow still alive in a game that they have been outworked and out played in every aspect. The score now 41-30 with just under seven minutes left in the game after a Dalton Schultz touchdown catch from Dak Prescott

Prior to Schultz’s touchdown catch was Tony Pollard who came in to cash in from the goal line for a touchdown.

The Cowboys trail by 11 and have to make another stop on defense in order to give Prescott and the Cowboys offense the ball back again. Not many possessions left in this one as the Dallas defense, who has been gashed all afternoon have to make a stop.

Cowboys trail Browns 31-17 at the half

The Cowboys trail the Browns 31-17 at the half in Week 4 of the very young NFL season.

For a few minutes of this Week 4 encounter, Cowboys fans thought they were in for yet another back and forth shoot out. It was, for a few series.

The Cowboys have found themselves with another two turnovers on offense in which leading to 14 points from the Cleveland offense. Baker Mayfield has had this way with the Cowboys secondary thus far. The Cowboys defense has given up over 300 yards of offense in one half of football.

The Cowboys also cant seem to get off the field either. The Browns rushing attack doesn’t even have and or need the likes of a Nick Chubb.

The Cowboys also find themselves on the wrong side of history. The Browns haven’t scored this many points in a first half since 1991 and have continued their offensive assault with 30 plus points in three straight games.

Both Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott have both put the ball on the AT&T Stadium turf and the Browns quickly took advantage of both momentum and field position.

The bright spots of the first half for the Cowboys is the aforementioned Prescott who has two touchdown passes. One, rookie CeeDee Lamb’s first career touchdown catch and a second, a laser to Amari Cooper over the middle.

The Cowboys trail 31-14 at half and if they want any shot at accomplishing yet another comeback, it starts with getting off the field on defense. The Browns will receive the second half kickoff.

Oh no…Former Georgia RB Nick Chubb leaves game with leg injury

Former Georgia football RB Nick Chubb left the Cleveland Browns game with a leg injury

It was a scary moment in the first quarter of the Cleveland Browns’ Week 4 game in Dallas.

Former Georgia running back Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns went down with a leg injury after getting rolled up on by a Cowboy.

From BrownsWire:

The Browns quickly reported that Chubb was questionable to return with a knee injury. No additional specifics were provided by FOX sideline reporter Pam Oliver in an on-air update.

Chubb immediately grabbed his knee and you can see by the expression on his face that he was in a lot of pain.

For now we will have to hope for the best. And unfortunately the best outcome here might be a high-ankle sprain.

Watch: Myles Garrett gets to Dak Prescott for the strip-sack

The Cleveland Browns pass rusher shows off many critical traits on a single play as he forces the Dak Prescott fumble.

Aaron Donald has a reputation as the “destroyer of worlds” along the defensive line, but Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett is making a case this season to earn a similar reputation. After sacking Dak Prescott earlier in this game, Garrett got to the Dallas Cowboys passer a second time, this time forcing a fumble:

Garrett blows past right tackle Tyron Smith on this play, getting to Prescott and forcing the loose football, which the Browns recover. When evaluating pass rushers, many people focus on the raw measurables, such as speed off the edge. But technique is also a critical component of putting pressure on opposing passers. When you see the replay angle of this sack, pay attention to Garrett’s hands. He is so quick with his hands, using a ferocious hand-over move the avoid the punch from Smith. From there, Garrett bends his angle towards the passer, getting to him to force the turnover.
