Doug Farrar’s top-50 big board flush with talent at Vikings’ positions of need

Doug Farrar of Touchdown wire his rankings of the top 50 players headed into the NFL Combine. See how they match up with the Vikings’ needs

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of pressing needs on their roster as they head into free agency and the NFL Draft. They’ll get their first opportunity to dive deeper into that process when the NFL Combine kicks off. The event is slated to start on February 28th, and it’s a chance for teams across the league to come and get to know the prospects who are expected to be drafted in April.

On Friday, Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire put together an article ranking the top 50 prospects who are going to participate at the event next week. Let’s see how those players fall in conjunction with our managing editor Tyler Forness’ piece, where he ranked the Vikings’ biggest needs by position.

VIDEO — 2023 NFL Draft either/or: Devon Witherspoon or any other cornerback?

Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling were given the choice of Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon, or any other CB draft prospect. The decision was easy for both of them.

Now that the scouting combine is right around the corner, it’s time for Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling to put on their imaginary general manager hats and make some personnel decisions with draft prospects. It’s Either/Or time! In this case, we’re giving Doug and Luke an interesting choice: You can have Illinois cornerback Devin Witherspoon, or every other cornerback in this draft class. Turns out, the decision was pretty easy.

Doug: This seems like a tough one, but it isn’t for me. In the first Top 50 of the 2023 draft season I released last week, I had Witherspoon at CB1 and the fifth-best prospect in this class. I then had Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez at ninth overall, Penn State’s Joey Porter Jr. at 11, South Carolina’s Cam Smith at 23, Alabama’s Brian Branch at 24, Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes at 27, and on and on. There are cornerbacks I need to watch more who could vault up that board by the time 2.0 comes out after the combine, like Maryland’s Deonte Banks, who I have right below the first round at 35th overall.

But here’s one thing I don’t think will change for me between now and the draft: Witherspoon is the best cornerback in this class, and his combination of size, speed, short-area quickness, and smart aggression set him apart. Most taller, lankier cornerbacks don’t have Witherspoon’s ability to adjust to routes in short spaces, and most smaller cornerbacks can’t just erase a receiver like Witherspoon can. In the 2022 season, per Pro Football Focus, he allowed 22 receptions on 63 targets for 206 yards, 71 yards after the catch, no touchdowns, three interceptions, 14 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 25.0. Which means that a quarterback facing Witherspoon was much better off chucking the ball out of the stadium than targeting him.

It’s a loaded cornerback class with all kinds of skills on display, but yes, I’d take Witherspoon over the field. Without a second thought. He’s my guy if I’m a general manager, because I can build my whole secondary around talent like that.

Luke: When I first dove into Witherspoon’s tape, I really didn’t expect to like him that much more than every other corner in this class, but I did. There just aren’t any flaws, man. He’s big enough, fast enough, twitchy enough, smart enough. He’s got the technique, the instincts, the timing, the toughness. He does everything at such a high level, you’re almost waiting for the catch at some point, but it never comes. My most recent big board had Witherspoon at No. 4 overall, trailing only Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, and Bijan Robinson. I LOVE the top of this corner class, too…I just think Witherspoon is still just that good, though.

Top 2023 NFL Draft prospects at the Eagles’ biggest positions of need

We’re looking at the top 2023 NFL Draft prospects at the Philadelphia Eagles’ most significant positions of need

The rich are getting richer, and even with a 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, things are looking promising for the Eagles as the 2023 NFL offseason gets underway.

Thanks to some draft night wizardry from Howie Roseman, the Eagles traded the No. 16 overall pick, No. 19 overall pick, and a 2022 sixth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the No. 18 overall pick, a 2022 third-round pick, a 2022 seventh-round pick, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick.

With 18 Eagles set to hit free agency and some roster retooling set to begin, here are the best 2023 NFL draft prospects at the Birds’ biggest positions of need.

Christian Gonzalez goes top 10 in Locked on NFL’s first round mock draft

Oregon Ducks defensive back Christian Gonzalez goes inside the top ten in the latest 2023 NFL mock draft from former scout Matt Williamson.

The 2022 NFL season is over after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, in Super Bowl LVII.

That means the 2023 NFL draft is the next big thing coming up for NFL fans, officially marking the beginning of mock draft season.

Former NFL scout Matt Williamson, now a host of the Peacock and Williamson NFL show, revealed his first round mock draft on Wednesday and showed a lot of love to Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

While most mocks have Gonzalez in the 15-20 range at this point, Williamson had Gonzalez going No. 6 overall to the Detroit Lions.

The Lions offense took huge strides last year, so this pick is likely to be on the defensive side of the ball. Gonzalez has great talent as well as impressive tape.

Gonzalez thrived in his first and only year with the Ducks, totaling four interceptions, seven passes defended, and 51 total tackles for Dan Lanning’s team.

He’s the only Oregon alumni projected to go in the first round on April 27, but if Williamson is right it may not be long before he’s off the board.

2023 NFL draft: All 59 defensive backs invited to the Scouting Combine

Here are all of the defensive backs who have been invited to this year’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The Seahawks have drafted and cultivated defensive backs about as well as any NFL team since Pete Carroll was hired as head coach back in 2010. In last year’s draft they landed a superstar cornerback in the fifth round – the second time they’ve done so in the Carroll era. This year their need for DBs is not urgent, but we still expect them to add one or two in the draft.

Here are all of the defensive backs who have been invited to this year’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Oregon CB Christian Gonzalez holds steady in Todd McShay’s 2023 mock draft

Oregon CB Christian Gonzalez holds steady in Todd McShay’s 2023 mock draft

Mock Draft season has been underway for a while now, with everyone and their mother projecting where the top college football players are going to land in the 2023 NFL Draft ever since the end of the college season took place back in January.

However, now that the NFL season is behind us following the Super Bowl LVII victory by the Kansas City Chiefs, we are about to see mock draft season enter hyperdrive. No longer are there actual games to analyze and talk about. Now, one of the main storylines in the NFL is the upcoming draft in April.

So who will go where? That is a question for Oregon Duck fans that involves cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who at the moment is the only Duck to be projected to land in the first round of the draft.

ESPN’s Todd McShay put out his first mock draft of the season on Wednesday, and where he has Gonzalez going to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 17 overall pick — not wildly different from other mock drafts that we’ve seen.

If the Steelers can’t retain Cameron Sutton, then Gonzalez makes a lot of sense as a replacement. He has 6-foot-2 size, good length, some serious wheels and high-end ball skills, as evidenced by four interceptions in 2022. And if Pittsburgh does re-sign Sutton or add another cornerback via free agency, Gonzalez has versatility to move around the secondary and line up over the slot.

Alternatively, the Steelers could look at offensive line reinforcements, though the top three offensive tackles are off the board in this scenario.

Gonzalez has been projected to go as high as within the top 10 according to some mock drafts, but for the most part, expectations are that he will be taken off the board somewhere between No. 15 and No. 20.

The first round of the NFL Draft will take place on April 27, so we will have to wait until then to find out the fate for this newest Pro Duck.

2023 NFL Mock Draft: Vikings Mock Draft Roundup 6.0

The latest Vikings mock draft roundup has a few interesting selections

Mock draft season is upon us and that means our mock draft roundup is back!

What we do every week is track the mainstream outlets mock drafts and aggregate how many times a player gets selected. Last season, we tallied up 173 mock drafts and only 10 of them were on offense. This season could end up being much of the same.

We will track them and try to determine trends and patterns, along with giving my own analysis on how they could fit with the Minnesota Vikings.

2023 NFL Mock Draft: Matt Anderson’s mock draft 2.0

The 2022 NFL season is officially over and @MattAnderson_8 has the first mock draft after final snap

The Super Bowl has just concluded, which means that the NFL offseason is now in full swing for all 32 teams. We are finally going to get some sort of feel for the direction teams are going, which will directly influence how they approach the NFL draft.

Mock drafts are what make the NFL offseason not so mundane. In my latest mock draft, I’ll aim to give it my best shot as to where teams might go come April’s NFL Draft.

Vikings select top ranked corner in latest mock draft from The Sporting News

The Vikings go out west in their latest mock draft

There is still plenty of time for the Minnesota Vikings to fill the holes on their roster ahead of the NFL season. While free agency has yet to begin, many experts believe the Vikings will look to take a corner with their first-round selection in April’s NFL Draft.

Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News released a mock draft that had the Vikings selecting Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

“The Vikings need to give Cam Dantzler better help on the back end with Patrick Peterson and Chandon Sullivan heading into free agency. Gonzalez also offers good size and can get physical with his agile coverage.”

Gonzalez is currently one of the top-ranked cornerbacks in this draft class. He brings with him good size for a cornerback, but he can still move fluidly. He can play press coverage or zone coverage and could turn into a star under the tutelage of new defensive coordinator Brian Flores. This would be a solid pick for the Vikings in April’s draft.

Christian Gonzalez joins former Oregon Duck in latest College Sports Wire NFL Mock Draft 4.0

According to the latest mock draft from @PatrickConnCFB, Christian Gonzalez is going to be teaming up with a former Oregon great at the next level.

Mock Draft season has been in full swing for the past couple of months since the college football season came to a close, and at this point, we’ve got a pretty good idea where the top players are going to end up, for the most part.

While there are some differences here and there, depending on which mock draft you look at, players and fans can feel confident that they at least know which round, or where in the first round some of the top players will be drafted.

For fans of the Oregon Ducks, the past couple of months have been spent trying to figure out where cornerback Christian Gonzalez is going to end up landing. Some mock drafts have him going as high as the No. 7 or No. 8 pick in the draft, while others see him more as a middle-to-late rounder on day one of the draft in April.

According to USA TODAY’s Patrick Conn, who recently put out his latest 4.0 version of the College Sports Wire Mock Draft, it will be a little bit of a wait until Gonzalez hears his name on draft night. Conn has Gonzo being taken by the Detroit Lions with the No. 18 pick.

“The Lions could use an upgrade at tight end, but the opportunity to snag Gonzalez is one they might not want to pass up,” Conn writes. “The Ducks cornerback can be a physical tackler and he hauled in four interceptions in 2022.”

While it may not mean much to Gonzalez, since he never played with the Oregon legend, Duck fans would be happy to see Lions’ offensive tackle Penei Sewell be able to welcome in a fellow Man of Oregon in Detroit and help get him settled into the NFL. We will see on draft night if Gonzalez ends up having to wait this long to hear his name, but at this point, it’s pretty clear that, regardless of when it is, Gonzalez should come off the board sometime on day one.
