Jags depth chart prediction: Wide receiver

The Jags receiving corps got stronger after the draft and there is a lot that needs to be sorted out behind star D.J. Chark.

Earlier in the week, we started our depth chart projections for the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the quarterbacks, running backs, and tight ends all covered, here are our projections for the wide receivers position:

Projections to make the final 53-man roster

WR1: D.J. Chark Jr.

D.J. Chark was the most improved player on the Jags’ roster without a doubt. He also proved to be their top receiver, becoming the first receiver since Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns (2015) to garner 1,000 receiving yards.

It didn’t matter who the quarterback was, Chark shined and received a Pro Bowl nod after making highlights after highlights. The crazy part is that he’s just scratching the surface and is only 23 years old.

WR2: Chris Conley

Chris Conley was one of the Jags’ veteran additions during the 2019 free-agency period and will enter 2020 as the Jags’ most experienced receiver as a sixth-year player. He had some issues with drops in 2019 but still managed to register 47 catches for 775 yards and five touchdowns.

As a new offensive coordinator to the Jags’ organization, Conley is a player I think Jay Gruden will be more than comfortable with as the No. 2 alongside Chark. However, it wouldn’t shock me if Laviska Shenalt received a lot of looks as the No. 2, too, but health is a concern with him and he’s also extremely raw.

WR3 (slot starter): Dede Westbrook

The Jags will roll out a lot of multiple receiver sets under Gruden and one can understand why when looking at the potential they have. Gruden has also been known to get a lot of production from the slot and that became clear when looking at the success of Jamison Crowder, who registered 221 passes for 2,628 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns throughout four seasons with Gruden and the Washington Redskins.

Westbrook is just as talented as Crowder and could serve the same role for Gruden’s offense in Jacksonville. After all, it’s where he’s flourished and his 2018 season is proof of that as all five of his touchdowns came from the slot.

WR4: Laviska Shenault Jr.

He was the Jags’ second-round addition of April’s draft and they have big-time plans for him. Shenault was extremely versatile while with Colorado playing as an exterior receiver, a slot receiver, running back, H-back, and as a wildcat quarterback.

Jags coach Doug Marrone says he’s already asked Shenault what kind of load he’s willing to take as a versatile weapon and the rookie is up for the challenge. That said, look for the Jags to be creative with Shenault while working him in slowly as an exterior receiver.

WR5: Keelan Cole

Having Keelan Cole as a No. 4 to No. 5 receiver on this roster is proof that the Jags at least have depth at receiver though the results may not be completely what fans want. He’ll enter the season with 1,600 career receiving yards, a 15.4 yard per catch average, and seven touchdowns.

With the depth chart now crowded Cole may have to see a lot of time on the field through special teams. It might be even wise to consider him in a returners role to protect the receivers further up the depth chart from injuries.

WR6: Collin Johnson

Collin Johnson was the second receiver drafted by the Jags in April’s draft as the team took him in the fifth round. At 6-foot-6, 222-pounds, there is a lot to be excited about with Johnson as he gives the Jags a massive jump-ball target to help Gardner Minshew II out.

There are questions as to if Johnson will be able to separate on the next level and he’ll also need to improve with breaking/sinking into his routes. However, if there is any receivers coach who could turn him into a solid pro it’s the Jags’ own Keenan McCardell.

Watch: Chris Conley 2019 highlights

Chris Conley had a solid year for the Jags in 2019 and he should only improve after building a strong rapport with Gardner Minshew II.

One part of the Jacksonville Jaguars offense fans could witness take another step is the receiver position. One reason for that is that most of the notables will be returning with an exemption of Marqise Lee, who is now with the New England Patriots.

Filling his role as the most experienced veteran will be Chris Conley, who signed with the team via a two-year deal last season. While there were some issues with drops (seven, per Pro Football Reference), he still managed to have a pretty productive first year in black and teal, registering 47 catches for 775 yards and five touchdowns. That’s a receiving and touchdown total that was good for second on the team with only D.J. Chark Jr. beating him out on both categories with 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns.

All of that said, Conley’s blazing speed provided fans with plenty of highlights throughout the season and here are some of his biggest moments of 2019:

Look: Here’s what Collin Johnson looks like in a Jags uniform

Ever wondered what Collin Johnson would look like in black and teal?

The Jacksonville Jaguars addition of Texas receiver Collin Johnson was arguably their biggest of Day 3. The young receiver was quite popular while with the Longhorns as he put together a solid collegiate career, totaling 188 catches for 2,624 career receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.

Just like Jags fans and NFL fans in general, his alma mater was pretty pumped about him being selected with the No. 165th selection. In fact, they were so excited they shared his new look as he’ll be turning in his burnt orange and white uniform for a black, teal, and white uniform in the pros.

Looks like it was meant to be if you ask me.

Johnson will come into a pretty solid receiving corps that includes Pro Bowler D.J. Chark, Dede Westbrook, Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, and second-round selection Laviska Shenault Jr. The hope for fans is that Shenault and Johnson can join Chark on the outside, which should allow the Jags to kick Westbrook back into the slot where he’s the most dangerous.

Jags players doing their part to help communities as nation battles COVID-19

The Jags have continued to support their communities through the nation’s battle with COVID-19, including RB Leonard Fournette.

As the nation’s battle with COVID-19 continues, the NFL’s support for their millions of fans affected has also continued. Earlier in the month, we posted the stories on how owner Shad Khan and cornerback Tre Herndon have helped the Jacksonville area. Since, many more have joined the battle to fight COVID-19 including Leonard Fournette, DJ Chark Jr., Josh Lambo, Tyler Shatley, Carl Davis, and Chris Conley.

Fournette, who has been a huge part of his community in New Orleans and Jacksonville, will be donating 7,000 meals up until June to Second Harvest of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana. The gesture is one that will certainly go a long way for a community that has been deemed a hot spot and area of concern for America.

Chark has done his part by using social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to spread the messages of local businesses. His friend from the receivers room, Conley, raised $9,300 for the World Health Organization after placing second in a Fortnite tournament.

Lambo, a big-time pet lover, has offered to cover a portion of adoption fees and a six months supply of dog food for any dog adopted from Fur Sisters of Jacksonville Beach. Lambo is familiar with the shelter as that’s where he adopted his dog, Indie, from.

Davis, who recently signed with the Jags, spent time with people residing at Five Star Veteran Center, which is a local non-profit that helps with supporting veteran mental health and re-integration into civilian life. Last, Shatley gave over $10,000 towards several outreach efforts to senior citizens.

The donation will be matched by the Jags Foundation. That funding will support a joint partnership between Florida Blue and Feeding Northeast Florida, who will prepare 1,500 meals for senior citizens in the Jacksonville area. Funding will also go towards feeding first responders and workers in the healthcare field.

As a big part of the community, the Jags have posted a page for fans to go to and donate to charities in the Jacksonville area. For those wanting to help the community, feel free to check that out here.

Jaguars make decision on former Georgia football WR

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made their decision on former Georgia football wide receiver.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have exercised their team options for fifth-year wide receiver Chris Conley, the club recently announced.

Conley, a former Georgia standout who was drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, is now under contract with the Jaguars through the 2020 season.

Conley, who came to Athens as a 4-star wide receiver out of North Paulding High School, signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2019 season. This year, his first with the Jags, he set a career-high for receptions (47), receiving yards (775) and receiving average (16.5). He made 14 starts and appeared in all 16 games, catching five touchdowns passes, which includes a 70-yarder in a victory against the Jets, the Jaguars’ longest TD of the 2019 season.

From 2011 to 2014, during his time at Georgia, he had 1,938 yards and 20 touchdowns.

He turned heads when he produced some of the most impressive NFL Combine numbers we have ever seen, running the 40 in 4.35 seconds and then following that up with a 45 inch vertical jump.

Jags pick up team options for WR Chris Conley, safety Jarrod Wilson

The Jags will be bringing back two key contributors as they picked up the contract options of WR Chris Conley and safety Jarrod Wilson.

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up the contract options of two key contributors in receiver Chris Conley and safety Jarrod Wilson Friday. The move to keep both now puts Conley under contract for one more year and Wilson under contract through 2021.

Conley, 27, joined the Jags last season as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs. While participating in 16 games and starting in 14, he was able to garner career-highs in receptions (47), receiving yards (775), and receiving average (16.5). His total in receiving yards put him only under DJ Chark Jr. for the season, so many expected him to remain with the team.

Wilson, 26, has been with the Jags since 2016 when he joined the team as an undrafted free agent. He signed an extension last January, then proceeded to start in all 16 regular season games for the Jags. He accumulated 73 tackles — a career-high — and registered a Pro Football Focus grade of 72.7 on the season. While the Jags could add a safety to push him down the road, he looks to be penciled in as a starter for 2020 alongside Ronnie Harrison.

The Jacksonville Jaguars unfortunately acquired their seventh double-digit loss season under owner Shad Khan after falling to the Atlanta Falcons Sunday. It was a game in which the Jags got off to another slow start and had to play from behind, which clearly isn’t a strength of theirs. In the end, the Falcons ended up covering the spread of 7.5 with ease, winning the game by a score of 24-12.

All of that said, lets take a look at the good, bad, and ugly moments from Sunday’s game against the Dirty Birds:

The good: CB Tre Herndon

In a game where there wasn’t a lot of positives, cornerback Tre Herndon definitely brought his A-game. He was very active Sunday against the Falcons, accumulating three tackles, two pass deflections and a pick on the day.

In the play in which Herndon got the interception, quarterback Matt Ryan was trying to hit Julio Jones deep after a roll out, but Herndon came to help out veteran corner A.J. Bouye and high-pointed the ball. It marked his third of the year and he now leads the team in the category.

Herndon has been gaining confidence since becoming the Jags starter in Jalen Ramsey’s place. That said, he’s made a case to be a starter in 2020 at the cornerback position as there is still plenty of room for him to further develop.

Postgame analysis: Jags acquire another double-digit loss season after falling to Falcons

The Jags struggles on defense continued against the Falcons and it resulted in their tenth loss of the season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t able to feed off the momentum they had last week in Oakland and fell to the Atlanta Falcons Sunday by a score of 24-12. The game marked their fifth double-digit loss since the bye week as the Jags fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and could never recover. It also gave them their seventh double-digit loss season with Shad Khan as owner.

There were issues all over the place, but the defense probably was the biggest one as they allowed quarterback Matt Ryan and company to have success at will. The veteran had 384 passing yards on the day, 166 of which went to Julio Jones, and 82 of which went to Austin Hooper.

Coming into the game, we mentioned how strong the Falcons’ passing game was and they showed why they were the NFL’s fourth-ranked team through the air. Jones especially couldn’t be stopped even with the Jags’ best cornerback, A.J. Bouye, on him.

The Jags also didn’t fare well against the rush. The Falcons’ top rusher on the day, Brian Hill, had seven carries for 66 yards, which was good for a whopping average of 9.4. Their second-leading rusher, Devonta Freeman, had 13 carries for 53 yards (4.1-yard average) on the day and a touchdown.

The Jags also didn’t have a strong day on offense. They were only able to garner a total of 288 total rushing yards in comparison to the 518 the Falcons had. Gardner Minshew II finished the day with 181 passing yards and a touchdown, which went to receiver Chris Conley. The touchdown pass marked the third consecutive scoring connection between the two as they linked up for two touchdown passes last week against the Oakland Raiders. However, it ultimately proved not to be enough.

The Jags now have one game left on the season, which will end what has been a catastrophic year. That game will take place at TIAA Bank Field at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.

7 fantasy football waiver wire claims to make ahead of Week 16

Seven targets to target, claim and add on the fantasy football wavier wire ahead of Week 16.

It’s championship weekend in fantasy football. Maybe you’re out, but maybe you have a title to play for.

Injuries, suspensions and other circumstances don’t care about that, though. Week 16 might be the perfect time for one last ditch late season move to make ahead of the big weekend.

Here are seven wavier wire claims to make in fantasy football ahead of Week 16:

 QB Ryan Fitzpatrick

The Dolphins and Bengals faceoff in a meeting of bottom-feeders in this one. While it’s tough to bet on the Dolphins to win games this year, it’s easy to bet on Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing the ball a lot. In nine games since returning as his team’s starter, he’s averaging 37.6 pass attempts per game and gets a few yards here and there on the ground. Beating the Bengals usually requires running the ball, but the Dolphins don’t really have a run game, either.

Winners and Losers from Jaguars vs. Raiders

The Jaguars finally seemed to have found themselves against the Raiders, ending a five game drought. Here are some winners and losers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars finally seemed to have found themselves against the Oakland Raiders, ending a five-game drought. The team played with energy and had a fire in their eye that fans had not seen since the New York Jets game, way back in Week 8.

Here are some of the winners and losers from the Jags’ Week 15, 20-16 victory over the Raiders:

Winners

Yannick Ngakoue

Pay Yan! Yannick Ngakoue put up his best performance of the season against the Raiders, terrorizing the Oakland offense on his way to two sacks, five tackles and four tackles for loss. With a possible extension looming over his head, Ngakoue certainly gave the Jaguars front office a game to watch.

Ngakoue was dominant and looked like a man on a mission. He was hindered by a hamstring injury early in the season but has been getting better as the season has gone on. With just two games remaining, let’s hope he can keep it up and get that well-deserved extension that Ngakoue and fans have been dreaming about.

Gardner Minshew

Minshew Mania is BACK! Gardner Minshew started off the second half slow, scoring just three points in the first half. Fans were thinking “here we go again,” however, the young signal-caller had his own idea. Minshew was electric in the second half and he and Chris Conley connected for some critical, game winning plays to close out a comeback victory.

It seems as though the Nick Foles experiment was over before it ever really started. Minshew gives this team the best shot to win games and has earned the right to have a shot at being this franchise’s long-term answer at the quarterback position. Time will only tell if he’s the answer though.

Chris Conley

The Jaguars were missing arguably their best offensive playmaker and Minshew’s favorite target, DJ Chark Jr., to an ankle injury, and needed a player to step up. Chris Conley did that and more as the young receiver hauled in four balls for 49 yards. Two of those balls ended up being the catches that gave the team the win, as Minshew and Conley led the team back from a 13 point deficit.

If Chark continues to be out with his ankle injury, expect Conley to be the one to continue to step up and make plays for this offense.

Losers

The players behind the Jags’ 8 penalties

In a game where the Jags just ended a long and tough losing streak, it’s hard to envision many losers. However, in Jaguars fashion, penalties once again plagued the team. The Jaguars are the most penalized team in the NFL with 123 penalties worth over 1,100 yards in damage. For a team struggling to get things going, this certainly is no way to help their cause.

Once again against the Raiders, the penalties haunted the team as the Jags committed eight penalties for 87 yards. This is an area that has been a problem for a while and has yet to be minimized in any way as the Jaguars currently have three of the top-11 penalty offenders in the NFL.

Redzone offense

The Jacksonville red zone offense was once again dismal as the team was forced to again go to kicker Josh Lambo for six points. The team has had a problem with this all season long and still struggle to find the end zone. Running back, Leonard Fournette, a bruising goal-line type back, has just three touchdowns on the season, a telling tale.

In terms of yards per game, the Jaguars fare pretty well, ranking 16th in the league with just over 351 yards per game. However, the team is scoring just 17.7 points a game, so what gives? The team has been awful in the red zone. The Jaguars offense is scoring touchdowns on just 38% on their red zone attempts, a scary stat. That is good for 29th in the league. It’s been a season long difficulty and was no better against Oakland.
