Report: Texas basketball has reached out to WVU transfer Sean McNeil

Texas is looking to add one of the best shooters in the Big 12.

West Virginia graduate transfer Sean McNeil is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal.

On3Sports reports McNeil has heard from over 20 programs within one night after entering the portal. Notables include Ohio State, Virginia, Indiana, Clemson and Texas.

Inconsistent shooting proved to be a major issue for the Longhorns in 2021-22. Adding one of the most accomplished sharp-shooters in the Big 12 would be a huge plus for Texas’ offense next season.

McNeil shot an impressive 37% from beyond the arch in his three seasons at West Virginia, finishing with over 900 points in 89 games played. He does a great job on the catch-and-shoot along with a good feel for creating his own shot.

Chris Beard recruited McNeil out of high school during his time at Texas Tech. Texas fans are hoping Beard can work his transfer portal magic yet again.

Five transfers that Texas basketball should pursue this offseason

Texas needs to restock some of the talent they are losing this offseason and the portal has some great options.

Depending on who you ask about the first year of the Chris Beard experience, some fans are content while others were left wanting more.

The team had garnered major expectations even with it being Beard’s first season as the head coach due to the fact that he was able to bring a handful of the top transfers available last season. Headlined by the No. 1 overall transfer, Marcus Carr, the Longhorns started the season ranked No. 5 in the country.

At first, the team was easily handling lesser teams, but would struggle against teams with size, like Gonzaga. It also didn’t help that Texas was a very inefficient three-point shooting team, and would often go minutes at a time without scoring as we saw in their tournament loss to Purdue where they went nearly 10 whole minutes without a bucket.

While adding talented transfers that had a ton of individual accolades seemed great at the time, the team took all season to figure out how to play with each other. It also didn’t help that big man Tre Mitchell left the team for what was deemed “personal reasons” by coach Beard and never returned. He was the closest thing to a center that Texas had, and even with him on the court they struggled against bigger players.

Texas’ season came to an end about a week ago, after advancing to the second round for the first time since Rick Barnes was the head coach. Beard is looking to build on that momentum with a fantastic 2022 class consisting of two five-stars and one four-star.

Due to the fact that the class is currently at three people, Beard will likely have to go back to the transfer portal to make up for the expected losses of Andrew Jones, Courtney Ramey, Marcus Carr, Tre Mitchell, Jase Febres, and Timmy Allen. It is worth noting that should they choose, Jones, Ramey, Carr, and Allen have a chance to return to use their extra COVID year.

However, according to 247Sports, it is unlikely that they will all choose to do so. As of now, only two players in Brock Cunningham and Christian Bishop have announced that they will take advantage of the extra year and return for next season.

Along with the two known returners, this leaves the roster with forward Dylan Disu who was recovering from surgery and was never really as available as many had hoped, and offensively deficient guard Devin Askew. The team will also rely on five-star forward Dillon Mitchell and five-star guard Arterio Morris.

This likely means Beard and Texas will have to go back to the portal to help fill out the roster, and now that he knows the players strengths and weaknesses, the Longhorns should be able to build accordingly.

Here are a few players that Texas should pursue for the next season.

Texas Basketball: Christian Bishop returning for 2022 season

Big news for Texas basketball!

Just days after an emotional season-ending loss to Purdue, Texas basketball has received fantastic news as staring forward Christian Bishop announced his intentions to return for another season. A big win for Chris Beard and his staff.

Bishop really came into his own down the stretch of the season after Tre Mitchell’s departure in early Feb. He scored in double figures in each of Texas’ two NCAA tournament games.

Keeping Bishop in the fold is a major plus for Texas’ frontcourt next year. Dylan Disu did not play at 100% for most of the season while Texas lost Mitchell and Jaylon Tyson midseason. Five-star Dillon Mitchell should provide an in-flux of talent at the position.

It remains to be seen how many of his teammates join Bishop in coming back, but this is a good sign Chris Beard has the program heading in the right direction.

Three takeaways from Texas’ season-ending loss to Purdue

This season was a step in the right direction for Texas basketball.

The 2021-22 Texas basketball season ended at the hands of Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Boilermakers got to the free-throw line often and hit clutch shots down the stretch to take down the Horns 81-71.

The Longhorns displayed a high level of intensity and toughness but just fell short of pulling off the upset. Playing in a meaningful March Madness game was a nice refresher for a Texas program that had not been in that spot since 2014.

Chris Beard had nothing but proud remarks about his team in his postgame press conference.

Every season ends like this unless you win the final Monday night game. Just super proud of our guys. It’s not all the normal coaching clichés, but I mean it. These guys overcame a lot.

Texas accomplished a lot in Beard’s first season and Longhorn fans have lots of reasons for optimism going forward.

Here are three takeaways from Texas’ season-ending loss in the round of 32.

Texas’ season ends with a hard-fought loss to Purdue

Texas comes up just short of the Sweet 16.

Chris Beard’s first season at Texas has come to an end in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Purdue’s size and athleticism were just too much for this Texas team.

Jaden Ivey put a dagger through the heart of Texas fans everywhere with a deep step-back three-pointer giving the Boilermakers a six point lead with a minute left. The shot put the game away as Purdue held on to win 81-71.

Perhaps the most eye-catching stat of the game was the free-throw discrepancy. Purdue shot 43 free throws compared to just 12 for Texas. A big moment in the game came when the Horns leading scorer Timmy Allen fouled out with six minutes left in the second half.

The loss should not overshadow a remarkable performance from Texas point guard Marcus Carr. He was everything for the Texas offense, finishing with a game-high 23 points and seven assists.

Texas accomplished a lot in the 2021-22 season. Winning over 20 regular season games and winning the programs first NCAA tournament game since 2014 are both signs Texas is heading in the right direction.

How No. 6 Texas stacks up against No. 3 Purdue in the NCAA tournament

The Longhorns will have their fair share of troubles with Purdue based on the style of play each team has.

For the first time in eight years, those that follow Texas basketball are actually still discussing the team being in the tournament after the first round.

The Longhorns, along with the other five teams out of the Big 12, advanced to the Round of 32. Texas was able to extinguish Virginia Tech’s scorching hot streak that saw them win 13 of their last 15 games, including the ACC conference tournament.

Texas’ reward for advancing is to take on No. 3 Purdue in the second round, whose ranking never dropped out of the top 10 all season.

It will be a tough matchup for Chris Beard’s squad considering the Longhorns struggle with teams who have skilled big mans. Purdue has two of them in 7-foot-4 Zach Edey and 6-foot-10 Trevion Williams. Not to mention, the Boilermakers also have projected top five NBA draft pick in Jaden Ivey running the offense.

On the bright side, Beard has a 2-0 record against Purdue in the NCAA tournament, as he beat them once while at Little Rock and once while at Texas Tech.

Texas will need to be flawless in every aspect of the game in order to upset Purdue on Sunday. Let’s take a look at how Texas and Purdue rank in some key statistical categories.

Texas MBB HC Chris Beard explains what Nick Saban taught him

Saban’s coaching lessons transcend the realm of college football!

There’s not too much crossover from college football and college basketball, excluding the fans, of course.

However, University of Texas Longhorns men’s basketball head coach Chris Beard explains that Alabama football’s head coach Nick Saban actually taught him something g that he has used in the Longhorn’s basketball program.

Beard states that Saban taught him how to quickly gather information and disseminate it to his team in a short amount of time, a skill necessary in just about every sport.

Saban’s coaching abilities transcend beyond football and his ability to instruct not just players, but coaches too is a great example as to what makes him so special. One of the greatest coaches in all of football also has the ability to aid in the coaching of another prominent sport.

In fact, Saban is actually known as a big lover of basketball.

Texas uses big second half to take down Virginia Tech 81-73

Texas is moving on for the first time since 2014!

Texas is moving on the round of 32 for the first time since Cam Ridley’s buzzer-beater against Arizona State in 2014. The Longhorns save one of their best performances of the season to take down Virginia Tech 81-73.

Each Texas starter finished in double figures led by Andrew Jones’ 21 points. Jones paced the sluggish Texas offense with five threes in the first half.

Texas grabbed the momentum at the end of the first half on a half-court buzzer-beater from Marcus Carr which gave Texas a 34-32 lead going into the locker room.

The Longhorns came out firing all second half with big performances from Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr and Christian Bishop helped Texas cruise to the next round.

The Horns will take on the No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.
