Five-star SG Ja’Kobe Walter to visit Texas

Five-star shooting guard Ja’Kobe Walter is one of Texas’ top targets.

One of the nation’s top prospects in the 2023 recruiting class is on campus this weekend to visit with Chris Beard and the Texas basketball program.

Five-star shooting guard Ja’Kobe Walter is one of Texas’ top targets from the high school level. 247Sports composite ranks Walter as the No. 2 player from the state of Texas and No. 23 overall player in the country.

Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports had high remarks about Walter in his scouting report.

Walter is a scorer with long arms who can knock down shots with range. He shoots a set shot but he is a consistent shooting threat from the three-point line. Walter is one of the consistently productive and fundamentally sound shooting guards in his class and a tighter handle could only assist him in firmly grasping that title. He does a good job on the defensive end with his ability to defend both wing positions given his size, length, and activity.

Texas landed two five-stars in the 2022 cycle in Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris. Beard hopes Walter will headline his 2023 recruiting class.

Three Longhorns declare for the 2022 NBA draft

Courtney Ramey, Andrew Joens and Dylan Disu will test NBA draft waters.

The outlook of Texas’ 2022-23 roster has started to take shape in the past couple of weeks with the addition of New Mexico State transfer Jarbai Rice and the return of Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr.

Texas is still waiting on a few more guys from last season’s squad to make a decision about their futures. Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones and Dylan Disu all declared for the NBA draft this week, each will maintain collegiate eligibility for next season as they have not signed with an agent.

Ramey also decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal to keep all of his options open. He played in over 125 games for the Longhorns while averaging over 10 points per game. Ramey served as one of the best defensive players on the team over the past few seasons.

Jones just wrapped up his sixth season in Austin. He has averaged 12 points per game on 42% shooting in his Texas career. The senior was one of texas’ most consistent players down the stretch of the 2021-22 season.

Disu did not have the season he wanted after transferring in from Vanderbilt. He dealt with a lingering knee injury keeping him from playing at 100%. Another year of development in college could really serve him well if scouts believe he is not quite ready for the next level yet.

The three have until June 13 to withdraw from the NBA draft if they chose to do so.

Texas G Marcus Carr to return for another season

Texas’ 2022 roster is starting to take shape.

Texas basketball continues to have a very nice offseason. Chris Beard is getting his starting point guard back for another year.

Marcus Carr announced he will be using his COVID-19 year of eligibility and will be returning to Texas for 2022. With the news from both Carr and Timmy Allen in the past few days, Texas’ 2022 roster is starting to take shape. The Longhorns also landed New Mexico State transfer Jabari Rice from the transfer portal on Tuesday.

The Toronto native transferred from Minnesota ahead of last season. Carr started 32 games at guard in his first season in Austin. He finished as Texas’ second-leading scorer (11.5 ppg) and assist leader (3.4 ppg).

Carr was Texas’ best player in the NCAA tournament. He guided the Horns to its first March Madness win since 2014 with a victory over Virginia Tech.

Timmy Allen is not ready to say goodbye to his collegiate career just yet.

The senior announced he will take advantage of his COVID-19 year and return to Texas for the 2022-23 season.

Allen led Texas in both scoring (12.1 points per game) and rebounding (6.4 rebounds per game) this past season. The 6-foot-6 forward excelled with his mid-range scoring and improved his defense as the season went along. He scored 24 points and hit the game-winning shot in Texas’ upset victory over the eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks.

The Utah transfer was named second-team All-Big 12 in his first season with the Longhorns.

Texas G Devin Askew will enter the transfer portal

Askew’s departure opens the door for incoming freshmen Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh to compete for early playing time.

Second-year guard Devin Askew will enter the NCAA transfer portal after just one season with the Texas program.

This marks Askew’s second time in the transfer portal in his young career. He spent one year at Kentucky before joining Chris Beard in Austin.

Askew averaged just over two points and one rebound per game while playing 15 minutes a game with the Longhorns. He provided excellent on-ball defense and strong passing ability.

The former five-star should draw lots of interest from schools around the country. Askew has built experience at two premier programs and will have three years of eligibility at his next destination.

Askew’s departure opens the door for incoming freshmen Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh to compete for early playing time. Senior guard Marcus Carr is still weighing his options and is considering coming back next season.

Texas in the mix for Utah Valley star transfer Fardaws Aimaq

One of the most sought-after players in the NCAA transfer portal has narrowed his options down to five schools.

One of the most sought-after players in the NCAA transfer portal has narrowed his options down to five schools.

The former Utah Valley big man Fardaws Aimaq is focusing on Gonzaga, Iowa, Washington, Texas Tech and Texas as potential transfer destinations. Aimaq will also be testing NBA draft while keeping his college eligibility.

The 6-foot-11 center put up huge numbers for the Wolverines in the WAC last season. He averaged 18.9 points and 13.7 rebounds in 32 total starts. Aimaq is coming off back-to-back WAC defensive player of the year awards.

Inconsistent frontcourt play was a weakness for Texas a season ago. The Longhorns received great news with the return of Christian Bishop. Landing Aimaq would provide Texas the flexibility to play Bishop in his more natural position of power forward.

Texas’ roster faces lots of uncertainty with several players having decisions to make about their futures. Aimaq would be a huge piece of the puzzle for the 2022-23 season.

Where Texas basketball lands in ESPN’s way-too-early top 25

Chris Beard appears to have Texas heading in the right direction.

The 2021-22 college basketball season came to an end on Monday night as Kansas cut down the nets after a thriller against North Carolina. Although we are over six months away from a new season of college basketball, it’s always a good time to look ahead to next year.

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello created his way-too-early top 25 rankings for the 2022-23 season. Texas comes in at No. 22 after an up and down season that finished with a loss to Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Predicting what Texas’ roster will look like at this point is no easy task, the Longhorns roster faces lots of question marks entering the offseason.

Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr, Andrew Jones, Courtney Ramey and Jase Febres are all seniors. Christian Bishop is the only projected returnee who averaged more than 3.7 points per game. But there’s some optimism in Austin. Dylan Disu should be healthier next season up front; he was a double-double threat every night at Vanderbilt, and Chris Beard will be hoping he’ll return to form. The Longhorns are also welcoming two five-star recruits on the perimeter, with playmaking guard Arterio Morris and explosive Dillon Mitchell entering the fold. Mitchell is a legitimate one-and-done prospect who makes his biggest impact defensively and in transition.

The NBA draft, transfer portal and recruiting ranks can drastically change the outlook of the roster. Chris Beard has proven he can build a roster in one offseason and will be tasked to do so again.

Texas guard Courtney Ramey exploring NBA and transfer options

Courtney Ramey will keep all of his options open this offseason.

Texas guard [autotag]Courtney Ramey[/autotag] has announced his intentions to test NBA draft waters along with keeping his collegiate options open by entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Ramey is one of the most experienced players in college basketball. The senior has played in 128 games in his four years at Texas, averaging 10 points per game in his career. Ramey became one of the Big 12 conference’s best defenders, anchoring a Texas defense that finished No. 10 in the nation.

He played a major role in Texas’ 2019 NIT championship, 2021 Big 12 tournament title, and helped win the program’s first March Madness game since 2014 this year.

Chirs Beard is still awaiting decisions from his other guards Marcus Carr and Andrew Jones. Five-star Arterio Morris and four-star Rowan Brumbaugh are two talented guards set to join the program in the summer.
