Chiefs GM Brett Veach says trading out of first round is a ‘possibility’

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach admitted to the possibility the team would be willing to trade out of the first round.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the last team to pick in Round 1 of the 2023 NFL draft.

Such is the reward for winning the Super Bowl two months ago. Their No. 31 pick has a tad more value due to the Miami Dolphins forfeiting their first-round selection due to tampering. However, the selection still remains at the bottom of the first round.

General manager Brett Veach told reporters Thursday that the team wouldn’t see any difficulty in moving out of Round 1.

“I don’t think it would be hard at all,” Veach said. “I know it was a lot of joking about (Chairman & CEO) Clark (Hunt) saying, ‘You can’t trade a pick’ and listen, maybe there was some truth to it.”

Shortly after the 2022 draft, Veach told the media that he joked with Hunt that they needed to hold back on their 2023 first-rounder, which now Veach considers on the table.

“But I think that applied more in the offseason or last summer — you know, we’re here now,” said Veach. “So I think a trade down is a part of the draft and it gives people more of a reason to come back on Friday and see us do even more work.”

The Chiefs have 10 selections in the draft with three in the top-100. Moving back would allow Kansas City to pick up extra capital to add quality depth on an otherwise championship roster.

For other teams, Kansas City’s No. 31 overall is also attractive because any player taken with that selection will have a standard first-round contract, which includes a fifth-year option. Players selected from Rounds 2-7 have four-year deals with no options.

With Kansas City a week away from the draft, the Chiefs are getting a lay of the land and how valuable their first-rounder could be.

“I think we’re at the party now, so it’s all up in the air and I think anything’s a possibility,” Veach said.

2021 NFL draft roundup: What Chargers’ rivals did

]The Chargers stacked deck in the 2021 NFL draft. But how about their divisional rivals?

The Chargers stacked deck in the 2021 NFL draft, receiving high praise for their haul. But how about their divisional rivals?

Here’s a roundup of the AFC West’s draft moves:

Potential linebacker prospects for Chiefs in each round of 2021 NFL draft

Here’s a look at some of the players Kansas City could consider adding in each round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Have we all settled down from the blockbuster trade that sent Orlando Brown Jr. to Kansas City? Probably not, but even though the Chiefs no longer have a first-round pick, they no longer have a pressing need for a left tackle either.

While the offensive line looks solidified now, other positions could and should be addressed. Linebacker is a middle-of-the-road need, but a position where improvements can be made. It’s arguably the most vulnerable position group in the building and we saw a taste of it last season when injury and COVID-19 struck. It is within reason to think that Brett Veach will want some insurance for that room.

Here’s a look at some of the players the Chiefs could consider adding in each round of the 2021 NFL draft.

One of the most popular positions to sent to the Kansas City Chiefs in mock drafts is a defensive end to play opposite of Frank Clark. A lot of time that player is selected in the opening round, but there are other options available if Brett Veach doesn’t take that route in Round 1.

Interior defensive lineman Jarran Reed was signed which could allow Chris Jones to slide outside in certain situations. Taco Charlton was re-signed which could provide some help on the outside. Tim Ward potentially takes a big step in his third season as well. There’s reason to believe the answer to improving the pass rush could already be in-house. However, as the cliche goes, you can never have too many pass rushers.

TEAM NEEDS

Linebacker

The Chiefs run defense was quite underwhelming last season, finishing No. 26 in rushing yards allowed. The unit made up of Anthony Hitchens, Damien Wilson and Ben Niemann played well as the season went on, but they are lacking speed. Wilson and Niemann are also in contract years.

Cornerback

The Chiefs secondary was stout last season, finishing eighth in passing yards allowed. However, one of the main contributors to their success – cornerback Kendall Fuller signed with the Redskins in free agency. Bashaud Breeland re-signed with the team, but only on a one-year deal.

Running back

The Chiefs high-powered offense was the primary reason why they ended up raising the Lombardi Trophy. In the backfield carrying the load was Damien Williams, but he is on the final year of his contract. Finding another multi-dimensional back should be a priority.

7 Georgia Bulldogs taken in CBSSports’ full NFL mock draft

CBS Sports released a full NFL mock draft that included 7 Georgia football players being taken.

Most NFL mock drafts that we’ve seen over the past couple of months have had 2-3 Georgia football players going in the first round.

However, in CBS Sports’ most recent 7-round mock draft, the outlet has just one Dawg taken in the first round, and that’s left tackle Andrew Thomas.

Analyst Chris Trapasso projects the New York Jets to take Thomas with the No. 11 overall pick in the NFL Draft, which is currently scheduled for April 23 in Las Vegas.

On Thomas, Trapasso wrote:

Jets GM Joe Douglas knows how vital an offensive line is after his time in Philadelphia. Thomas was outstanding the two seasons at Georgia and has length for days.

Trapasso has Thomas ranked as the 15th overall player in the draft class and 4th ranked offensive tackle.

In total, Trapasso has seven Georgia players going in the draft.

Round 2:

Solomon Kindley has advice for former Georgia football teammates

Georgia football offensive guard Solomon Kindley has advice for his former UGA teammates while at the NFL Combine.

Georgia offensive guard Solomon Kindley is in Indianapolis this week for the NFL Combine.

Viewed anywhere from a first to third round draft pick, Kindley is meeting with teams, undergoing body measurements and eventually will partake in on-field drills.

Kindley said he has already met with the Packers and Patriots and has plans to meet with the Falcons and the Chiefs.

Since 2017, he started 10 games at right guard and 26 at left guard. He left Georgia with one year of eligibility remaining, and during an interview at the combine he mentioned that he misses Athens and his teammates back in Georgia.

“I’m not going to lie, I miss my teammates,” Kindley said. “I miss my little brothers. I miss them UGA Dawgs.”

When asked what he missed most about Kirby Smart, Kindley noted that it was Kirby’s drive and constant motivation that he has missed the most.

He also went on to give advice to the younger Bulldogs in Athens.

“Take it all in. Just soak it all up because it feels like I had just got there and now I’m here already. Don’t waste no time. The time is short at Georgia. Everything you do, you gotta pay attention to.”

“Do everything the right way.”

Busy week for Solomon Kindley, including possible meeting with Falcons

Former Georgia football OT Solomon Kindley says he has meetings with multiple NFL teams, including a potential one with the Atlanta Falcons.

Could the Atlanta Falcons finally snap the streak of refusing to select former Georgia payers in the NFL Draft?

This year could be the year, especially with the high volume of Georgia players in the draft. Is it possible that the Falcons will be left no choice but to draft a former Bulldog?

Solomon Kindley, Georgia’s offensive guard who is viewed as a 1-3 round draft pick, said that he believes he has a formal interview with the Falcons this week.

He also added that he has met with the Packers and Patriots, and also thinks he has a meeting with the Chiefs coming up.

Kindley to the Falcons would excite Georgia fans, and it would surely excite Kindley, who would stay close to home. Kindley grew up in Jacksonville, Florida.

And then there’s the Chiefs, who Kindley also said he believes he has a meeting with this week. Kindley, if taken by Kansas City, would pair up with speedster Mecole Hardman on the Super Bowl champs.

But the possibility that excites me the most is Kindley to the Patriots. The two parties have already met at the NFL Combine, and it’s a known fact that Pats head coach Bill Belichick is a big fan of drafting Dawgs.

If Kindley does wind up in New England, he would join an offensive line that already features two Georgia guys — David Andrews and Isaiah Wynn. Additionally, he would join his fellow Dawgs in blocking for another Georgia boy, running back Sony Michel.

In Indy, Kindley measured in at 6-foot-3 and 1/4 inches tall and weighed in at 337 pounds.

Since 2017, Kindley started 10 games at right guard and 26 at left guard.

Kindley left Georgia with one year of eligibility remaining.
