Chelsea Chandler: ‘Week from Hell’ led to UFC Fight Night 239 weight miss – complete with attempted home break-in

Chelsea Chandler missed weight ahead of UFC Fight Night 239. The reasons why will likely surprise you.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Chelsea Chandler[/autotag]’s ‘Week from Hell’ actually ended on a high note.

At UFC Fight Night 239, Chandler (6-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) became the first to defeat fellow bantamweight Josiane Nunes (10-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in the promotion. She did so by unanimous decision.

Smiling ear-to-ear in victory, Chandler addressed the underlying issue head-on during her post-fight news conference: a one-pound weight miss.

Chandler voiced confidence that the issue would not persist. She attributed the scale blunder to a variety of simultaneous issues that emerged throughout the week, including an alleged home break-in.

“Oh God, we can get into it,” Chandler told MMA Junkie. “I’ve had the Week of Horror. My car was vandalized when I left my house. People tried to break into it. That was Monday. I’ve got that time of the month, too. So this has been… I was ready to go, and just little hiccups. I have it dialed in. My nutritionist, my weight, everything is good. So next time, I’ll be here on time, on weight, ready to go.”

Chandler’s alleged home invasion attempt comes less than two weeks after Marlon Vera said the same thing happened to him while he was away for his UFC 299 title fight vs. Sean O’Malley.

“People say, ‘Hey this fighter is going to be gone. Let’s take advantage of it.’ It sucks, but (I’ve) got to get those cameras up,” Chandler said. “… I’ve got to let someone else move into my house when I’m gone and take care of it and babysit the house.”

Chandler hopes the UFC won’t use the weight issues against her. A win over a previously UFC-unbeaten should earn Chandler a marquee fight next, she thinks.

“Listen, I don’t like begging for fights, but I want to fight,” Chandler said. “I want fight offers. After that last fight, there was a bad taste in my mouth. I went up. I took a risk going up in a weight class fighting a bigger girl. This is my home and I’m hoping to get a fight as soon as possible. I’m No. 13 in the world now and I feel like a couple of the girls below me are either out injured. I’m hoping to get someone in the top 10, big top 10 opponents, and get my way through this division. It’s wide open.”

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $42,000 while title challengers get $32,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

Six new fights added to UFC Vegas 88

Six fights including multiple double-digit UFC veterans have been added to the March 16 event in Las Vegas.

Six more fights have been added to the UFC Fight Night event scheduled for March 16 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Five of the six bouts were officially announced Tuesday by the promotion, while the six was revealed on social media by the fighters involved.

The event is currently headlined by a heavyweight bout between Tai Tuivasa (15-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC) and Marcin Tybura (24-8 MMA, 11-7 UFC). Light heavyweights Kennedy Nzechukwu (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and Ovince Saint Preux (26-17 MMA, 14-12 UFC) will also fight each other on the card.

UFC on ESPN 49 video: Chelsea Chandler, Norma Dumont separated during heated backstage incident after faceoff

Middle fingers and bad words flew as Chelsea Chandler and Norma Dumont were pulled apart at the UFC Apex.

[autotag]Chelsea Chandler[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Norma Dumont[/autotag] might be the final women’s featherweight fight in UFC history – and there’s some heat behind it.

Following UFC on ESPN 49 faceoffs Friday, Chandler (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Dumont (9-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) had to be separated backstage at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. MMA Junkie acquired video of the altercation from Dumont’s manager, Alex Davis, which shows a fired-up Dumont speaking Portuguese and glaring at Chandler, who moved forward. The fighters flipped middle fingers each way as Davis and other bystanders intervened to pull the fighters apart.

It’s unclear exactly where the bad blood between the two featherweights began, but they had just engaged in a tense ceremonial faceoff moments prior. Chandler and Dumont are scheduled to fight Saturday on the main card at the UFC Apex.

Chelsea Chandler says Norma Dumont fights ‘boring’ sometimes, plans to knock her out in second

Chelsea Chandler plans on bringing the fight to Norma Dumont at UFC on ESPN 49.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Chelsea Chandler[/autotag] plans on bringing the fight to [autotag]Norma Dumont[/autotag].

Chandler (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on Dumont (9-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in a featherweight bout on Saturday’s main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Chandler isn’t a fan of Dumont’s style but thinks her game plan will make for an exciting fight and lead to a finish.

“She kind of plays it boring sometimes,” Chandler told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 49 media day. “She plays it safe, and I plan on going forward and putting it to her. So, if I go out there and do what I want, I feel like I’m going to rag-doll her and make her tired, and I’m hoping for a KO, Round 2.”

With UFC president Dana White saying that the featherweight division will likely be retired due to Amanda Nunes recently retiring, Chandler hopes that an emphatic finish of Dumont saves the division – especially since she doesn’t see other fighters putting on exciting performances.

“I understand why the featherweight division is going away,” Chandler said. “I mean, you’ve got Norma who’s fighting these boring fights, and she’s pitter-pattering. Nobody wants to see that. So, they want a heavy-hitter that’s going to go out there and take someone’s head off, and I think I can be that person.

“If I’m not, I would love to fight at bantamweight, too. I’m prepared to fight at either. I like featherweight. I think I’m heavier, my shots are harder, and I can take girls out. But we’ll see what the UFC wants to do after this performance.”

Ronda Rousey return? Maybe UFC fighter Chelsea Chandler knows something we don’t

Is Ronda Rousey’s return to the UFC just a rumor or a real possibility? Diaz Brothers protege Chelsea Chandler said she’s hearing some things.

The year is 2023, and rumors of a [autotag]Ronda Rousey[/autotag] return to (real) professional fighting are starting to bud. According to UFC fighter [autotag]Chelsea Chandler[/autotag], a return to the cage could be in order.

Wait, what?!

At UFC on ESPN 49 media day on Wednesday, Chandler (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) randomly had viewers of her interview do a double take as she mentioned some rumblings she’s heard.

“I’ve been hearing Ronda is coming back,” Chandler told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “I’ve heard she’s coming back at 145. You never know. … If I got out there and put on the performance I plan on putting (on), I’ll welcome her to 145. I think it would be a great fight. It has been a long time for her and things change, people get better, and I think people are on to her one-trick-pony armbar. Money talks, and she would bring eyes to the sport again. I feel like her time in WWE is starting to go down, so I’d like to see it.”

It’s unclear where exactly Chandler heard this intel. Did she simply see one of the handful of Instagram accounts promoting a random idea as a “rumor”? Or does Chandler have some real sources?

Chandler, 29, is associated with the Diaz Brothers and trains out of Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu, so it’s possible she could have that insider knowledge. After all, crazier things have happened in this sport.

With UFC 300 right around the corner, could the UFC be going in full nostalgia mode? Has Brock Lesnar had any MMA fight hankerings now that WWE and UFC are owned by the same parent company? Could a Nate Diaz return be in order?
