UFC on ESPN 49 fighters took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay, a program that continued after the UFC’s deal with Venum.

LAS VEGAS – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 49 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $126,500.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC on ESPN 49 took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $49,000 while title challengers get $49,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-49 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

UFC 281 medical suspensions: Frankie Edgar, Dominick Reyes among longest from card with 11 finishes

UFC 281 proved to be a brutal event, and the medical suspensions handed out by the New York State Athletic Commission speak to that.

On Monday, MMA Junkie received the full list from the NYSAC, which oversaw UFC 281 at Madison Square Garden in New York. It showed 19 fighters suspended indefinitely on a card that featured 11 finishes, which means those fighters will need doctor’s clearance before returning to the cage.

Among the 19 indefinite suspensions, five fighters – [autotag]Frankie Edgar[/autotag], [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag], [autotag]Nicolae Negumereanu[/autotag], [autotag]Seung Woo Choi[/autotag], and [autotag]Ottman Azaitar[/autotag] – received the longest mandatory minimum of 90 days.

Former lightweight champion Edgar was knocked out by Chris Gutierrez in his retirement fight; Reyes was knocked out by Ryan Spann; Azaitar lost by knockout to Matt Frevola; Choi lost by TKO to Michael Trizano; and Negumereanu was knocked out by Carlos Ulberg.

Both fighters in the main event, [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] and [autotag]Israel Adesanya,[/autotag] received indefinite suspensions as a result of Pereira’s fifth-round TKO win to claim the middleweight title. Pereira was suspended 30 days and Adesanya 60 days.

UFC 281 video: Matt Frevola steamrolls Ottman Azaitar with three-punch knockout

Matt Frevola dropped Ottman Azaitar like a sack of potatoes at Madison Square Garden.

NEW YORK – [autotag]Matt Frevola[/autotag] and [autotag]Ottman Azaitar[/autotag] finally got to fight Saturday and after years of anticipation, it ended quickly.

In a UFC 281 preliminary card bout, Frevola (10-3-1 MMA, 4-3-1 UFC) knocked out Azaitar (13-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) with a brutal three-punch combination that ended the fight at 2:30 of Round 1.

The matchup between Frevola and Azaitar was originally scheduled for UFC 257 in January 2021. It was canceled when Azaitar was caught by UFC staff sneaking a person and items into the then-COVID-19 bubble. UFC president Dana White said Azaitar would be cut, but later changed his mind.

Frevola becomes the first man to defeat Azaitar and he does so on the first fight of a new multifight UFC contract. Frevola turns a standalone knockout win over Genaro Valdez into a two-fight winning streak.

Who better to “humble” Ottmain Azaitar than Matt Frevola?

NEW YORK – [autotag]Matt Frevola[/autotag] spoke to reporters at media day ahead of UFC 281.

Frevola (9-3-1 MMA, 3-3-1 UFC) meets unbeaten [autotag]Ottman Azaitar[/autotag] (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on Saturday in a rebooking from their scrapped bout at UFC 257. Frevola was scheduled to face Azaitar in January 2021, but Azaitar was pulled from the matchup and briefly cut by the UFC for breaching COVID-19 safety protocols.

“This guy is undefeated, and I’m gonna give him his first loss,” Frevola told reporters, including MMA Junkie. “This guy needs to be humbled and who better to humble him than me?”

He continued, “As soon as I heard they signed him back to the UFC, I knew I wanted that fight back, because I love the matchup, and I wanted this fight, and we got it. We got it on the biggest stage in the world, Madison Square Garden.”

UFC 281’s Ottman Azaitar laughs off questions about bag incident: ‘It’s not a Mission Impossible movie’

Ottman Azaitar can’t escape questions about his bag incident in Abu Dhabi, but he is having fun with his responses.

NEW YORK – [autotag]Ottman Azaitar[/autotag] cannot escape questions about his incident ahead of UFC 257.

Since the moment in January 2021 that led to his release from the UFC, Azaitar (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has faced repeated questions about the infamous bag that was left on his hotel balcony on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Ahead of his scheduled bout against Matt Frevola at UFC 281 at Madison Square Garden, Azaitar responded to more questions about the incident with laughter and superhero-themed hypothetical scenarios.

“Why this big secret around this bag?” Azaitar rebutted at Wednesday’s media day. “It’s not a ‘Mission Impossible’ movie. … If I wanted to sneak something in, I could have done it without the Mission Impossible or sending Spider-Man to give Batman something, and Ant-Man make small, big, and Superman from up and however. You know?”

Azaitar did not speak on Frevola (9-3-1 MMA, 3-3-1 UFC), who was the same opponent he was set to face at UFC 257, but he did address the relief of being able to return to training after injuries and being welcomed back into the UFC after everything that took place.
