UFC on ESPN 43 medical suspensions: Cory Sandhagen faces more time off than Marlon Vera

Four fighters were given 180-day medical suspensions by the Texas commission after UFC on ESPN 43 in San Antonio.

Four fighters face 180-day medical suspensions as a result of UFC on ESPN 43 bouts, but headliners [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] and [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] are not among them.

UFC on ESPN 43 took place this past Saturday at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The event was overseen by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which suspended all 20 fighters for medical reasons after their bouts, according to a list published Wednesday by the commission.

CJ Vergara, Daniel Pineda and Lucas Alexander all won their bouts, but walked away with 180-day suspensions, as did Steven Peterson, who lost his retirement bout to Alexander.

It’s important to note fighters can return sooner than the expiration date of their medical suspension should they receive proper medical clearance from a doctor. In addition, the TDLR does not list reasons for medical suspensions – just durations.

UFC on ESPN 43 post-event facts: Charles Oliveira’s longstanding record under threat

Charles Oliveira hasn’t competed at featherweight in six years, and someone is finally closing in on his record after UFC on ESPN 43.

The UFC made its return to Texas on Saturday with UFC on ESPN 43, which took place at AT&T Center in San Antonio and, after a number of fight week fallouts, saw a 10-bout card unfold.

The most high-profile result came from the main event, where [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) proved his worth as a bantamweight contender with a split decision victory over the streaking [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (20-8-1 MMA, 14-7 UFC) after five rounds.

UFC on ESPN 43: Nate Landwehr vs. Austin Lingo odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 43 odds and lines between Nate Landwehr and Austin Lingo, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a featherweight bout on the main card, Nate Landwehr and Austin Lingo meet at UFC on ESPN 43 at AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC on ESPN 43: Landwehr vs. Lingo odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The fights are on ESPN/ESPN+, with the prelims beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET. The main card, also on ESPN/ESPN+, begin at 7 p.m. ET.

Landwehr heads to the octagon with a pair of victories in his past 2 outings. He stopped David Onama via majority decision last time out, and he submitted Ludovit Klein Oct. 16, 2021. Still, it’s just a couple of fights since he was embarrassed in a 1st-round knockout loss to Julian Erosa in the opening minute.

Landwehr holds a 6.37-to-4.00 significant strikes landed per minute advantage over Lingo, and he is more accurate, too, at 54.87% to just 44.44% for the challenger.

The veteran is more solid in the ground game, too, posting a mark of 1.30 in both takedown average and submission average, and he is 66.67% in takedown accuracy percentage, too.

Lingo has managed a pair of unanimous-decision wins against Luis Saldana and Jacob Kilburn in his most recent fights after a unanimous-decision loss to Youssef Zalal in his company debut at UFC 247.

UFC on ESPN 43: Landwehr vs. Lingo picks and predictions

Records: Landwehr (16-4-0) | Lingo (9-1-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Landwehr (-210) is a big step up in competition for Lingo (+170). The challenger would be wise to try and keep his distance, although Landwehr holds a 2-inch reach advantage, while holding a big significant strikes landed per minute advantage.

Since landing in the UFC, Landwehr has gone the distance twice in 5 fights, while Lingo has gone the distance in each of his 3 bouts at the UFC level.

I think LANDWEHR BY POINTS (+225) is a solid value play for a chance to more than double up your initial investment.

Over/Under (O/U)

Playing YES (+135): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE is a nice value at plus-money. Lingo hasn’t had a finish in 3 UFC bouts, and Landwehr has needed the judges to get involved in 2 of his past 4 outings.

OVER 2.5 ROUNDS (+100) is also decent at even-money, if you want a little wiggle room in the event of a late stoppage in Round 3.

Austin Lingo says Nate Landwehr already was on his radar before short-notice shot at UFC on ESPN 43

Two weeks after he had a long-awaited return yanked out from under him, Austin Lingo is ready to get back to work at UFC on ESPN 43.

SAN ANTONIO – Two weeks after he had a long-awaited return yanked out from under him, [autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag] is ready to get back to work.

Lingo was set to take on Ricardo Ramos at UFC Fight Night 221 in Las Vegas earlier this month, but Ramos missed weight badly enough that the fight was canceled the day before. That left Lingo at the alter when he was hoping to get back in the cage for the first time since August 2021.

Fortunately for the featherweight, he didn’t have to wait too much longer. Lingo (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will take on Nate Landwehr (16-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in a featured bout Saturday at UFC on ESPN 43 at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+.

“I had two injuries last year, so that set me back a little bit,” Lingo said at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 43 media day. “It wasn’t long-term injuries, so I wasn’t too beat up about it. No surgery, thank God, but I did rehab a lot throughout the year and got it done.”

The long layoff wasn’t something that did Lingo any favors to build on the momentum of his back-to-back wins after a loss in his promotional debut in February 2020. He said he hopes for three or four fights in 2023 to help make up for it.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=420030788 tag=420038862]

In Landwehr, he gets a tough opponent on short notice when he steps in to replace Landwehr’s original opponent, Alex Caceres.

“He’s (good at) everything, and he’s pretty good on the ground,” Lingo said. “I’m good at all that stuff, too, so it’s going to be a good fight – meet in the middle and let’s see who’s better. I see the first round, just feeling it out. One of us might land a head (shot) or might land a heavy blow – see how it goes from there.

“I’ve seen him and I’ve seen him fight, and I definitely wanted to fight a guy that’s (like him) – he’s got the same style, same everything. It was definitely somebody that was on my radar.”

Check out Lingo’s full media day interview in the video above.

The UFC has touched down in the “Lone Star State” this week with four bantamweights at the top of the bill.

UFC on ESPN 43 takes place Saturday at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (20-7-1 MMA, 14-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in a fight between perennial bantamweight contenders. Sandhagen is a -170 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Vera is +145. But our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have slight underdog Vera ahead at 6-5 in the picks.

In the co-feature, former women’s bantamweight champion [autotag]Holly Holm[/autotag] (14-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Yana Santos[/autotag] (14-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC). Holm just signed a new six-fight deal with the UFC and is a -250 favorite at the betting window. She’s also the only unanimous pick from our staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) meets short-notice replacement [autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at featherweight. Landwehr is more than a 2-1 favorite and is a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

Our second unanimous pick is the biggest favorite on the main card. [autotag]Maycee Barber[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) is a -270 favorite at the sportsbook and has a shutout in our picks against [autotag]Andrea Lee[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) in their women’s flyweight bout.

[autotag]Manel Kape[/autotag] (18-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is a nearly 2-1 favorite in his flyweight bout against [autotag]Alex Perez[/autotag] (24-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC). He doesn’t have a shutout, but he has a big 9-2 lead in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Chidi Njokuani[/autotag] (22-8 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is a near-unanimous pick in his middleweight fight against [autotag]Albert Duraev[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC). Njokuani is the smallest favorite on the main card at -155, but he’s got a near-shutout in our picks at 10-1.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, Vera (62 percent), Holm (80 percent), Landwehr (74 percent), Barber (72 percent), Kape (63 percent) and Njokuani (79 percent) are the choices.

Nate Landwehr to Austin Lingo: ‘We’re going to see who’s the real dog’ at UFC on ESPN 43

Nate Landwehr, who has bonuses in his back-to-back wins, wants to test Austin Lingo’s heart at UFC on ESPN 43 in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO – [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] wants to test [autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag]’s heart at UFC on ESPN 43.

Landwehr (16-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) faces Lingo (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in Saturday’s featured bout at AT&T Center in San Antonio. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+.

“This is my 21st pro fight. I’ve seen a lot, done a lot,” Landwehr told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “He’s orthodox. He’s a banger, I’m a banger. He’s tough, I’m tough. We’re going to see who’s the real dog.

“This will be a good fight. Lingo’s a tough dude. He’s got good boxing. He’s got a good left hook. We’re going to see who’s who and what’s what real quick.”

[lawrence-related id=2572119,2571649,2571603]

Landwehr is coming off back-to-back bonus-winning victories, including when he outlasted David Onama in a back-and-forth Fight of the Night winner this past August. While he’s happy to put on another show, “The Train” knows he needs to start putting people away if he wants to hit the featherweight rankings.

“I’m going to try and pitch a shutout,” Landwehr said. “I’m going to try and go out there and just dominate him, get a finish. I want to finish this guy. I should have finished Onama. (I) just was having too much fun, but I should have got the finish. I need a finish. I need to rack up finishes in the UFC.

“We’ll see how the division plays out in the future. There’s a bunch of big fights happening in the top 15. I’m pretty mad, I was supposed to leave Saturday top 15, and that’s driving me. I’m going to get this finish, going to carry on, and we’re going to make a run.”
