Today in Nets history: Nets win first playoff game in eight years

Drazen Petrovic and Derrick Coleman made sure the Nets weren’t swept by the Cavaliers in the first round of the 1992 NBA Playoffs.

With the NBA on hiatus and New York continuing its battle against the novel coronavirus outbreak, Brooklyn Nets games will not be played for the foreseeable future.

For the Nets, as much as any team, this comes at an odd time — Brooklyn was battling the Orlando Magic for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings. At the stoppage of play, the Nets had a half-game advantage over the Magic.

Since there aren’t any games, each day Nets Wire will highlight impressive individual performances and major moments throughout Nets history:

After losing in the first round of the 1986 NBA Playoffs to the Milwaukee Bucks, the New Jersey Nets didn’t make the postseason again until 1992. But there was still another streak the ’92 group needed to snap.

The Nets didn’t win a game in the 1986 NBA Playoffs. Same thing happened in 1985.

Going into Game 3 of the first round on the 1992 NBA Playoffs, the Nets franchise had not won a playoff game in almost exactly eight years — the last win coming against the Bucks on May 5, 1984.

The skid came to an end on April 28, 1992, as the Nets fought off another sweep, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-104 to force a Game 4 (full box score).

Chris Morris led the Nets with 28 points. Derrick Coleman (22 points and 11 rebounds) and Mookie Blaylock (10 points and 12 assists) both posted double-doubles.

Drazen Petrovic had a strong showing, as well. He scored 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting (3-for-5 from deep).

Today in Nets history: Chris Morris achieves major first

Chris Morris had the best statistical performance of his young Nets career on April 21, 1991.

Before the New Jersey Nets visited the Orlando Magic on April 21, 1991, Chris Morris had logged 10 assists in a game once. It happened over two months before the Nets’ 120-110 loss to Orlando (full box score).

But on this trip, Morris would reach the mark again. Additionally, he scored 17 points for New Jersey, and — unlike his previous 10-assist performance — Morris also finished with double-digits in the rebounding column (14).

This marked the 1988 draft pick’s first triple-double of his NBA career. Morris went on to play in the league through 1998-99, but he would never log another triple-double.

Spencer Dinwiddie continues to climb Nets’ all-time 3-pointers made list

Spencer Dinwiddie didn’t have his best night from 3-point territory in the loss to Orlando, but one of the attempts he made was significant.

Although Spencer Dinwiddie didn’t have his best night from 3-point territory in Brooklyn’s 101-89 loss to the Orlando Magic, he hit one fairly significant shot from long-range.

With the first of the two 3-pointers Dinwiddie made on Monday, the point guard took sole possession of seventh place on the Nets’ all-time 3-point field goals made list. He was previously tied with Chris Morris, who made 368 in his time with the Nets. Dinwiddie has now made 370 throughout his time in Brooklyn.

The next player ahead of Dinwiddie is former Nets point guard Deron Williams, who wound up with 485 — and was passed by Joe Harris earlier in the 2019-20 season.

After his 2-for-10 performance from 3-point territory, Dinwiddie is now shooting 29.6% from deep on the season. Last season, the point guard shot 33.5% from long-range.

Overall, Dinwiddie went 6-for-19 in the loss and scored a team-high 16 points.
