Former Michigan football standout retires from NFL

He’ll always be a fan favorite in Ann Arbor! #GoBlue

He wasn’t there for a long time, but he was there for a good time.

The story of former Michigan football edge rusher Chase Winovich is one of perseverance. Recruited to the Wolverines as a linebacker, he played tight end, fullback, special teams gunner, before finally bulking up and making the switch to defensive end prior to the 2016 season.

And in that year, Winovich went from a virtual unknown to a fan favorite nearly overnight.

Known by his flowing locks under his helmet, Winovich became a starter in 2017, a role he’d have for two years. Outspoken with the media, he was the Wolverine who coined the term ‘revenge tour’ in 2018, which sparked both adulation by Michigan fans and disgust amongst their rivals.

Winovich was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by the New England Patriots where he was initially productive but fell off as time wore on. He got new life briefly in Cleveland, where he let fans pick his number (and thus wore No. 69). In 2023, he started the season with the Houston Texans but was cut and found himself on the Miami Dolphins practice squad.

But earlier this week, Winovich announced he’s hanging up his cleats.

Given his overachiever status, it will not be surprising to see Winovich succeed at whatever he chooses to do next.

Former Browns DE Chase Winovich announces his retirement

The DE played for the Patriots, Browns, and Dolphins during his career.

Former Cleveland Browns defensive end Chase Winovich announced his retirement via Instagram on Tuesday. Winovich played in eight games for the Browns last season after starting the season on injured reserve. He recorded one sack, three quarterback hits and 20 tackles during his time in Cleveland and was best known for his playful demeanor. He was a much-needed character in a defensive end room filled with some resentment among veteran leaders

The Browns traded Mack Wilson Jr. to the Patriots for Winovich in the spring of 2022. Winovich played the majority of his career in New England, amassing 11 sacks and 85 tackles in his three years there.

Winovich was signed by the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins this year. Winovich played in three games for the Dolphins this season before being released last week. He was a college standout at Michigan and made two All-Big Ten teams during his time in Ann Arbor. We’re hoping Winovich does just as well in his second career.

Former Patriots third-round draft pick announces NFL retirement at age 28

Former Patriots third-round draft pick Chase Winovich announced his NFL retirement

Chase Winovich is officially retiring from the NFL at 28 years old.

The former New England Patriots defensive end posted on social media that he was retiring from football and embarking on a new journey.

Winovich, who was recently released by the Miami Dolphins, started his NFL career after being selected out of the University of Michigan by the Patriots in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft.

He burst onto the scene with a good start right out of the gates, recording 5.5 sacks in back-to-back seasons. It was easy for him to create an immediate connection with fans, too.

Who could ever forget when he dressed up like Elsa for a “Frozen” skit with Julian Edelman?

After his time in New England, Winovich had three more pit stops with the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Dolphins. Much like Rob Gronkowski, Winovich has the personality to do big things outside of football if he chooses.

So the end is truly the beginning for the former Patriot.

Winovich, 28, was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2019 draft following a career at Michigan that included two First-team All-Big Ten selections.

After spending three seasons with the Patriots, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns. He spent one year with the Browns before joining the Houston Texans this offseason, but following his release during roster cuts, he joined the Dolphins practice squad.

In 56 career games, Winovich recorded 107 tackles, 26 quarterback hits, 12 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble.

Dolphins swap LBs on their practice squad on Tuesday

Miami moves on from a LB and brings in another.

The Miami Dolphins have had some injury issues early in the season, and it’s not just impacting the 53-man roster, the practice squad has had some as well.

On Tuesday, the Dolphins released linebacker Chase Winovich from the practice squad with an injury settlement.

Winovich was elevated for three games this season. He recorded two tackles while playing 47 snaps on special teams and five on defense.

To fill the spot left by Winovich, the Dolphins have signed linebacker Quinton Bell to their practice squad.

Bell, 27, was selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 after a collegiate career at Prairie View A&M. He’s also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles.

In nine career games, he’s recorded three tackles.

Bell was part of the group that worked out for Miami last week when they signed running back Jake Funk to the practice squad.

Dolphins sign WR Robbie Chosen to the 53-man roster, elevate LB Chase Winovich

Both spots are filled.

As the Miami Dolphins prepare for their Week 4 battle with the Buffalo Bills, they’ve made a number of roster moves.

After placing River Cracraft on injured reserve and Erik Ezukanma on the non-football injury list, Miami has announced that they’ve signed Robbie Chosen and linebacker Cameron Goode and elevated linebacker Chase Winovich.

Chosen made his Dolphins debut last week, and he brought in a long touchdown from Mike White in the fourth quarter to extend Miami’s huge lead over Denver.

This is Winovich’s second elevation, with the first coming for the game against the New England Patriots. He may be able to help with the Dolphins missing Jaelan Phillips for this matchup. He’ll only have one more elevation following this game.
