Grading the Dolphins wide receivers after their 2023 season

A look at Miami’s wideouts, and the year they had in 2023.

The Miami Dolphins finished their 2023 campaign with an 11-6 record and made the postseason for the second time in as many years under head coach Mike McDaniel. Unfortunately, it came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round.

While other teams are in the midst of their playoff run, it’s time to do some reflecting on the team in South Florida.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reviewing and evaluating different positions for the Dolphins in 2023. Today, we’ll look at the wide receivers.

Dolphins WR Robbie Chosen exits with injury vs. Cowboys

Miami loses a depth wideout.

Down 7-3 in the first quarter to the Dallas Cowboys, the Miami Dolphins got some momentum off of back-to-back receptions by Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Robbie Chosen.

However, on Chosen’s reception, his helmet bounced off of the ground, causing him to get up slowly. He was helped off of the field and needed to be evaluated.

After the play, the team announced that Chosen is being evaluated for a concussion.

Chosen may not be a top option in Miami, he can still take advantage of some of the matchups he’ll draw against the Cowboys with Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill getting most of the attention.

UPDATE: Chosen has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Dolphins make a trio of roster moves on Tuesday

One goes to IR, one signs with the 53 and one signs with the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins continue to get bit by the injury bug throughout their 2023 campaign.

On Tuesday, they placed running back Salvon Ahmed on injured reserve after he suffered a foot injury during Miami’s battle with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

He’ll now have to miss at least four games before he returns, and the Dolphins are running out of designations.

That leaves just Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. as the lone healthy backs on the active roster, with De’Von Achane also dealing with a knee issue.

To replace Ahmed on the 53-man roster, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen from their own practice squad. He was elevated for the second time this year last week and recorded two receptions for 39 yards.

That move left an open spot on the practice squad, which Miami has filled by signing running back Darrynton Evans. That name may seem familiar, and that would be because he was with the team earlier this year before he was signed to the Chicago Bears active roster.

If the Dolphins only have Mostert and Wilson going into Friday, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Evans get an elevation.

Dolphins swap practice squad players, elevated two to the active roster

Miami makes multiple practice squad moves on Saturday.

The Miami Dolphins, prior to their Week 11 battle with the Las Vegas Raiders announced a number of moves regarding their practice squad.

Running back Jake Funk was released from the practice squad. He was signed by Miami last month, but he was never elevated to the active roster. With De’Von Achane coming back from injured reserve, they don’t necessarily need the depth at the position.

To fill his spot, the Dolphins have signed wide receiver Robbie Chosen, who they released from the 53-man roster to make room for Achane.

For the game against the Raiders, the Dolphins have elevated Chosen and offensive lineman Chasen Hines.

This is Chosen’s second elevation this season after being brought up for the Week 3 battle with the Denver Broncos. In that game, he hauled in a long touchdown from backup quarterback Mike White.

This is Hines’ first elevation since joining Miami’s practice squad after roster cuts. He was originally a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots after a collegiate career at LSU. He hasn’t played a snap in the NFL yet, but during his time at LSU, he started 16 games at right guard and one at left guard.

With the Dolphins starting two backup guards and being without one depth guard in Robert Jones, Hines could be thrust into playing time if Liam Eichenberg or Lester Cotton were to go down.

Robert Saleh hints at potential interest in Jets reuniting with Robbie Chosen

Robert Saleh hinted at the Jets potentially expressing interest in bringing back Robbie Chosen.

The New York Jets are looking to make changes to their offense in hopes of creating a spark, and they could look into adding a familiar face soon. With the Jets potentially adding a receiver from free agency, Robert Saleh hinted at the team having interest in signing Robbie Chosen.

Chosen has spent the last four seasons with three different teams. The 30-year-old wideout signed with the Miami Dolphins before the 2023 season, only for him to recently be released.

While appearing in only four games for the Dolphins this season, he recorded only one reception. That one reception resulted in a 68-yard touchdown catch in Miami’s 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos earlier this season.

Before playing for the Carolina Panthers, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Dolphins, Chosen spent the first four years of his career with the Jets. His best season with the Jets came in 2017 when he produced 63 catches, 941 yards, and seven touchdowns on 114 targets.

Outside of Garrett Wilson, the Jets haven’t gotten much production out of their wide receivers this season. Wilson is questionable to play on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, and Allen Lazard hasn’t been consistent.

Even though Chosen has lacked consistency himself, his speed seemingly intrigues Saleh for an offense that is desperate for another receiver to step up alongside Wilson.

Dolphins waive WR Robbie Chosen

Miami releases a veteran wideout.

After activating River Cracraft from injured reserve this week, the Miami Dolphins had a logjam at wide receiver.

On Thursday, the team rectified that by waiving veteran Robbie Chosen from the 53-man roster.

Chosen had played in just four games for the Dolphins this season, recording just one reception, a 68-yard score against the Denver Broncos from backup quarterback Mike White.

This move opens up a spot for Miami to potentially activate running back De’Von Achane from injured reserve in time for this weekend’s battle with the Las Vegas Raiders.

It also wouldn’t be surprising to see Chosen end up back on the Dolphins practice squad.

Dolphins sign WR Robbie Chosen to the 53-man roster, elevate LB Chase Winovich

Both spots are filled.

As the Miami Dolphins prepare for their Week 4 battle with the Buffalo Bills, they’ve made a number of roster moves.

After placing River Cracraft on injured reserve and Erik Ezukanma on the non-football injury list, Miami has announced that they’ve signed Robbie Chosen and linebacker Cameron Goode and elevated linebacker Chase Winovich.

Chosen made his Dolphins debut last week, and he brought in a long touchdown from Mike White in the fourth quarter to extend Miami’s huge lead over Denver.

This is Winovich’s second elevation, with the first coming for the game against the New England Patriots. He may be able to help with the Dolphins missing Jaelan Phillips for this matchup. He’ll only have one more elevation following this game.

Dolphins elevate WR and LB for matchup vs. Broncos

A veteran wideout gets his first elevation.

The Miami Dolphins are set to take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium in a game that could see Mike McDaniel’s team to 3-0 to start the 2023 campaign.

Ahead of the game, Miami elevated wide receiver Robbie Chosen and linebacker Cameron Goode to the active roster.

Chosen was brought in as a free agent this offseason, and following a strong start to the offseason program, he struggled to make many plays in the preseason. He may be providing more help if Jaylen Waddle, who is in concussion protocol, is inactive.

Goode is up for the third time in three games, as he’s been assisting on special teams.

Players are only allowed to be elevated three times from the practice squad to the active roster, so Chosen has two more elevations, while Goode will need to be signed to the 53 if the Dolphins wants to use him again in 2023.

Dolphins’ 2023 training camp preview: WR Robbie Chosen

He’s been making noise in the offseason program.

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory minicamps and will return to the Baptist Health Training Complex near the end of July to prepare for the 2023 regular season.

Before that, we’ll be going through the majority of Miami’s roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

After looking at some quarterbacks, running backs and three receivers, we’ll move on to the team’s most recent addition to the receiver room – Robbie Chosen.

Panthers carrying 5th-most dead money into 2023 season

The Panthers are currently carrying over the fifth-highest amount of dead money into the 2023 season. Here’s why:

The Carolina Panthers may be carrying around the second-most salary cap space in the NFL right now, but they’re also carrying something else—a load of dead money.

As we enter June, the Panthers are being charged with $51.5 million of dead money for the 2023 campaign. That total ranks fifth in the league.

So, with the help of Spotrac, let’s see how they got to that bulky number.
