Broncos host intriguing draft prospect with no college experience

Qwan’Tez Stiggers is a rare draft prospect with no college experience. He played in the FCF and CFL before getting looks from NFL teams.

The Denver Broncos brought in Toronto Argonauts cornerback Qwan’Tez Stiggers for a pre-draft visit last week, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

The Broncos were also among 29 NFL teams who attended the defensive back’s personal pro day in Atlanta last month. After impressing at his workout, Stiggers is now visiting multiple teams leading up to the NFL draft.

Stiggers (5-11, 204 pounds) is an intriguing prospect because he has no college experience. He was set to attend Lane College in 2020 but dropped out following his father’s death. The defensive back later played in the Fan Controlled Football league in 2022 and caught the attention of the CFL.

The Argonauts signed Stiggers in 2023 and he had a breakout year in his first season, winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award after recording five interceptions. He was also named a CFL East All-Star.

At his pro day last month, Stiggers ran a 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds. The CFL has agreed to release Stiggers from his contract if he’s selected in the NFL draft. The 22-year-old cornerback is considered a late-round prospect, but his best bet to reach the NFL might be as an undrafted free agent. The draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.

Chase Claypool added to exclusive negotiation list by CFL’s Roughriders

Chase Claypool is still looking to sign with an NFL team, but the CFL’s Roughriders are preparing for the possibility he heads north.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League placed former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chase Claypool on their exclusive negotiations list, according to 3DownNation.

The CFL allows each of its teams to keep 45 players on an exclusive negotiations list that gives that team rights to a player who intends to join the league. While the Roughriders are preparing for the possibility that Claypool is heading north, that isn’t necessarily going to happen nor has there been much indication that it will.

According to Farhan Lalji of TSN, the Roughriders “have made no contact with [Claypool] or his agent” and the receiver still has interest from NFL teams.

Other former NFL players who have found themselves on CFL exclusive negotiations list include Colin Kaepernick, Josh Gordon and Baker Mayfield.

Claypool, who was born and raised just outside of Vancouver, began his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a second-round pick in 2020. As a rookie, he scored 10 touchdowns in his first 10 games before his production tailed off late in the year.

In 2022, the Chicago Bears acquired Claypool for a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but he caught only 18 passes in 10 games with the team before he was traded to the Dolphins in October 2023 in a swap of late-round picks. In nine games in Miami, he caught four passes for 26 yards.

Former Lions RB signs with the CFL’s Tiger-Cats

Former Lions RB Greg Bell signs with the CFL’s Tiger-Cats

It was a quiet Thursday on the NFL transaction wire for the Detroit Lions. The Lions didn’t sign anyone, nor did any ex-Lions resurface with another NFL team. However, one former Lion did find a new home north of the border.

One-time Lions running back Greg Bell has signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. It’s a fresh start for the big running back from San Diego State.

Bell originally signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL draft. He had some hype working in his favor before suffering a season-ending groin injury early in training camp. After being waived before the 2023 campaign, Bell wound up spending last season on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad.

Chad Kelly denies harassment allegations

In a since-deleted tweet, Chad Kelly wrote he “absolutely” denied harassment allegations. The QB also plans to “vigorously” defend himself.

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly has denied allegations of harassment about a week after he was named in a lawsuit.

“I am shocked by the allegations which have been made against me,” Kelly wrote Friday in a since-deleted tweet. “I absolutely deny these events and intend to vigorously defend myself and will be seeking the dismissal of the action.”

Some backstory details from TSN’s Rick Westhead: “A former Toronto Argonauts strength and conditioning coach has filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit against the Canadian Football League team and quarterback Chad Kelly, alleging the league’s highest-paid player and reigning Most Outstanding Player harassed her and that the team fired her after she rejected his advances.”

The CFL announced an investigation earlier this week.

“The CFL is committed to creating healthy and positive working and playing environments for all those associated with the league and its member clubs,” the league said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We take the allegations against the Toronto Argonauts and Mr. Kelly very seriously and we have opened an investigation in accordance with the league’s Gender-based Violence Policy.”

Kelly, 29, was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft. He was later cut by the Broncos after he was arrested on suspension of criminal trespassing in 2018.

After being released by Denver, Kelly spent two years with the Indianapolis Colts from 2019-2020 and then moved to the CFL in 2022. He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player after scoring 31 touchdowns in 2023.

Lions to sign top CFL pass rusher as a free agent

Betts is the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player after setting the league record for sacks in a season

The Detroit Lions are looking for some potential pass rush help from a more northerly Lion. According to TSN’s Farhan Lalji, Detroit is signing CFL standout Mathieu Betts from the British Columbia Lions.

Betts, 28, set the Canadian Football League record for sacks in a season with his 18 in 2023. That earned Betts the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2023. He racked up 25 total sacks in two seasons for the BC Lions.

He is a product of Laval and participated in the 2019 Shrine Game, earning an undrafted rookie shot with the Chicago Bears. After being cut that summer, he went back home to Canada.

It took some time for Betts to blossom. He had just two sacks in his first two seasons in the CFL with the Edmonton Elks before moving onto the Lions.

Terms of the deal are not yet known, other than it is a free agent signing to the actual roster and not a reserve/future contract, per Lalji and the CFL’s own website.

Former Georgia WR Terry Godwin re-signs with CFL team

Former Georgia football wide receiver Terry Godwin was the 15th-leading receiver in the CFL last season

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Terry Godwin has signed a one-year deal to return to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Godwin recently completed a career-best year in the Canadian Football League.

Godwin, 27, hauled in 68 receptions for 864 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats. He finished the 2023 CFL season with the 15th-most receiving yardage in the league.

Godwin is making a difference in the CFL and is poised to have a big season in 2024. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound receiver bounced around the NFL for a few seasons before finding a home in the CFL.

The Carolina Panthers drafted Godwin in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft. Godwin played with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2019-2021. He caught three passes for 32 yards during that time. The Tennessee Titans waived Godwin ahead of the start of the 2022 NFL season. Since then, Godwin has been playing in the CFL. According to Spotrac, Godwin earned $912,424 during his NFL career.

Last season, the Tiger-Cats finished 8-10. Godwin was Hamilton’s second-leading receiver in 2023. Let’s look at some highlights from Godwin’s impressive 2023 campaign.

Godwin played at Georgia from 2015-2018. He finished his Georgia career with 1,800 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. It is good to see Godwin find a professional football home.

Adam Korsak talks about his first CFL season, taking on an unofficial coaching role with Rutgers football

Adam Korsak took on a unique role with Rutgers football after his CFL season.

Adam Korsak may be coming off a stellar season in the CFL, but the former All-Big Ten punter is fully invested with Rutgers football. Following an eye-opening first season as a professional, Korsak was back in Piscataway this fall where he took on a mentorship role with his former team.

As a senior in 2022, Korsak became the first Rutgers football player to win a national honor with the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation’s top punter. It was a surprise that Korsak wasn’t signed by an NFL team, but he certainly proved himself in the CFL.

He left the program as one of the most accomplished contributors in Rutgers football history, regardless of position.

Korsak completed a strong first season in the CFL this summer and fall with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, averaging 47.6 yards per punt. Once the season ended in mid-October, Korsak was almost immediately back at Rutgers and making his presence felt within the team.

The role with Rutgers, not official by any stretch, saw Korsak volunteer his time at practice and on game day to help Flynn Appleby’s first year as the team’s punter. Appleby, an Australian like Korsak, was a redshirt in 2022 before taking over for Korsak this fall.

“I tried and help the Australian punter, Flynn Appleby and just enjoy being around the program and in the community as much as possible,” Korsak told Rutgers Wire.

“I first got to Rutgers in 2017 and it feels like home to me and glad I was welcome back.

“We both are Australian punters with similar styles and in similar schemes at Rutgers which to be fair is unique in regard to traditional notions of punting. I was able to share my experience of five-plus years punting in it and tried to guide him throughout the year especially into next season as he gears up for his second year.”

The unofficial coaching role was an exhausting schedule and went far beyond merely being a presence around the team. Korsak would roll into the Hale Center early in the morning.

From there, it was a grind.

[lawrence-related id=34102,34039]

Arriving even before many of the coaches, Korsak would get a workout in and have breakfast with the current Rutgers football team. From there, he’d watch film with the specialists and then would attend practice where he would mentor and work with Appleby.

Then it was more film, this time with the coaching staff and then finally with Appleby. When Appleby then went off to class, Korsak was then free.

He was at nearly every practice and game following the end of his CFL season. During this time, he was very much glued to the hip of Appleby. At the end of the day, it was a solid first season for Appleby, who settled in nicely and was very consistent with his placement and directional punting.

Despite just coming off his first professional season, Korsak simply didn’t helicopter into practice when he felt like it. He was committed to being a part of this process for a program he very much loves.

[lawrence-related id=33919]

The role was all-encompassing and thorough.

“Just being around the program in all aspects, so in meetings and practice during the week and then on the sideline for game day, being able to work through schemes and problems that may arise and providing support,” Korsak said,

“I definitely enjoy being around sports and especially Rutgers football. I think I have an ability to equip and inspire others but I will play for as long as I can.”

Korsak had plenty of opportunities to showcase his leg. Saskatchewan lost their last seven games and struggled last year in the CFL. He punted 117 times in 18 games played.

[lawrence-related id=34173,34127]

It was a successful first season, and one that should garner him some NFL looks. He answered a lot of questions about his ability to punt pro style after making the transition from the rugby style he employed in college at Rutgers.

He was named a West Division All-Star as a rookie.

“I really enjoyed the season up in Canada, the boys were great to be around and (I) was able to punt pro style in games and perform,” Korsak said.

“Had the ability to execute mainly pro-style punts and gain the all-star award by leading the league in punting average. Being able to showcase directional pro-style punts in professional games was very important to my development.”

Falcons sign WR Austin Mack to reserve/futures contract

The Falcons signed WR Austin Mack to a reserve/futures contract on Wednesday, bringing the team’s total to 16

The Atlanta Falcons announced one more reserve/futures signing on Wednesday, adding wide receiver Austin Mack to the mix. The 26-year-old spent last season in the CFL, making the all-star team as a member of the Montreal Alouettes.

Mack worked out for the Falcons last week but did not land a contract. The team must have seen something in the young CFL star, though. Mack is one of 16 players signed to reserve/futures contracts over the last three days.

  2. RB Robert Burns
  3. WR Chris Blair

Former Ohio State receiver gets another NFL shot

Former Ohio State receiver gets another NFL shot #GoBucks

We have been covering the rise of former Ohio State football star, Austin Mack, in the Canadian Football League and we are happy to see he is getting another shot in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. For Buckeye fans who don’t remember, Mack was a former four-star recruit who started to see the field regularly as a true sophomore, but his career was always limited due to injuries. The former standout left Ohio State with 79 career receptions for 1,050 yards and six touchdowns.

Mack just completed his first season in the CFL after spending time with the New York GiantsTennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers in the NFL and boy did he thrive up North. He finished the season earning All-CFL honors after snagging 78 receptions for 1,154 yards and four touchdowns during his first season in the CFL.

I was a bit shocked to see Mack get another shot in the NFL considering he is 26 years old, but he has always had a reputation for being one of the hardest workers in the locker room and has the ideal size at 6-foot, 2-inches. We wish Mack good luck at his next stop!
