Former Georgia WR Terry Godwin re-signs with CFL team

Former Georgia football wide receiver Terry Godwin was the 15th-leading receiver in the CFL last season

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Terry Godwin has signed a one-year deal to return to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Godwin recently completed a career-best year in the Canadian Football League.

Godwin, 27, hauled in 68 receptions for 864 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats. He finished the 2023 CFL season with the 15th-most receiving yardage in the league.

Godwin is making a difference in the CFL and is poised to have a big season in 2024. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound receiver bounced around the NFL for a few seasons before finding a home in the CFL.

The Carolina Panthers drafted Godwin in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft. Godwin played with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2019-2021. He caught three passes for 32 yards during that time. The Tennessee Titans waived Godwin ahead of the start of the 2022 NFL season. Since then, Godwin has been playing in the CFL. According to Spotrac, Godwin earned $912,424 during his NFL career.

Last season, the Tiger-Cats finished 8-10. Godwin was Hamilton’s second-leading receiver in 2023. Let’s look at some highlights from Godwin’s impressive 2023 campaign.

Godwin played at Georgia from 2015-2018. He finished his Georgia career with 1,800 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. It is good to see Godwin find a professional football home.

Jaguars bring in 2 CFL defensive players for workouts

The Jaguars tried out a couple of CFL defensive players Friday, but haven’t signed either.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hosted defensive back Carthell Flowers-Lloyd and linebacker Gary Johnson Jr. for workouts Friday.

Flowers-Lloyd, 25, played for the Canadian Football Leagueā€™s Hamilton Tiger-Cats during the 2023 season and recorded 31 tackles. Prior to his professional career, Flowers-Lloyd played at Eastern Michigan before transferring and finishing his collegiate career at Stony Brook.

Johnson, 27, is a CFL veteran who played three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders before joining the Ottawa Redblacks for the 2023 season. In 22 games over four seasons, heā€™s recorded 33 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble.

As a linebacker with the Texas Longhorns, Johnson recorded 150 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles in 26 career games. He briefly spent time with Washington in 2019, joining the team as an undrafted free agent during training camp.

Both Flowers-Lloyd and Johnson have starred on special teams in the CFL. The Jaguars previously mined the CFLā€™s talent pool and signed quarterback Nathan Rourke, who has spent the majority of the 2023 season on the practice squad.

Winnipeg downs Hamilton in OT to repeat as Grey Cup champs

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are once again Grey Cup champions

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have won back-to-back Grey Cups.

They rallied and defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the second straight CFL championship, 33-25, in overtime Sunday. This was Grey Cup 108.

Zach Collaros found Darvin Adams in the end zone in overtime, which is called a “mini-game.” He then connected with Rasheed Bailey for the two-point conversion.

Winnipeg picked off Jeremiah Masoli of Hamilton to end the game. Kyrie Wilson made the interception on a second-down play.

This was the fourth time the Grey Cup went to overtime. Winnipeg became the first team to go back-to-back since Montreal in 2009-10.

The overtime “mini-game” saw each team start a drive from the opponent’s 35-yard line. If a team scored, it had to go for a two-point conversion.

The CFL season in 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19.

The Bombers beat the Ti-Cats in the 2019 Grey Cup, too.

Winnipeg trailed 22-10 in the fourth quarter but had a huge wind in its favor and went on a 15-0 run. to take the lead.

Sergio Castillo kicked a 45-yard field goal with 1:52 left and added another point when the wind-aided kickoff could not be returned.

Masoli, who came on for an injured Dane Evans, led the Ti-Cats on a desperate drive into the wind.

They moved 70 yards before being stopped at the Winnipeg 5 and settling for a field goal that tied the game and forced overtime.

Former CFL star, pro wrestler Angelo Mosca dies at 84

CFL Hall of Famer Angelo Mosca has died at the age of 84

Angelo Mosca was a legend on the football field North of the border and in the professional wrestling ring.

The five-time Grey Cup champion and Canadian Football died Saturday after long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Per his wife, Helen:

It is with great sadness that the family of Angelo Mosca announce his passing . . . after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Angelo was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as friend to so many.”

Mosca was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s shortly after his 78th birthday in 2015.

Sportsnet.ca offered a look into his colorful and sometimes controversial career.

A five-time all-star, Mosca appeared in nine Grey Cup games but gained national notoriety for his vicious hit on Fleming in the ’63 contest. Fleming took the ball on a pitchout and was running to his right. He had been tackled just inside the sidelines and was lying on his stomach when Mosca came flying over top the Lions’ player. Fleming took a minute before rolling over and appearing visibly stunned. No penalty was called on the play but many _ including then Lions quarterback Kapp ā€“ felt Mosca’s hit was not only late but dirty.

With Fleming no longer able to play, Hamilton went on to win the Grey Cup 21-10 and further enhance Mosca’s reputation as the CFL’s meanest player, something he later promoted during his pro wrestling days as bad boy “King Kong” Mosca.

Kapp never shook Mosca’s hand following the ’63 Grey Cup. But he and the Lions gained some revenge by downing Mosca and the Ticats 34-24 in the ’64 title game at Toronto’s Exhibition Stadium for the B.C. club’s first-ever CFL championship.

Years later, there was an incident between Mosca and Kapp that went viral.

And a couple of his memorable moments as a wrestler:

Falcons to sign Raiders starter, former Saints safety Erik Harris

The Athletic reports that the Atlanta Falcons will sign Las Vegas Raiders free agent Erik Harris, a former New Orleans Saints safety.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Athletic’s Vic Tafur reports that the Atlanta Falcons will sign Erik Harris, a safety who some Saints fans might remember. Harris made the jump from the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats (where he became a friend and teammate of former Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux) to the NFL, initially competing for snaps in New Orleans. He became a starter with the Las Vegas Raiders, and now he’s back in the NFC South — this time suiting up with the dirty birds.

And that shouldn’t surprise anyone. The Falcons have many holes on their defense, including safety, where Harris has shown he can help out and at least compete for the starting job. He’ll be joining former Saints personnel executive Terry Fontenot in Atlanta, too; Fontenot worked as director of pro scouting in the past and was a big part in bringing Harris to the NFL in the first place.

So while this doesn’t guarantee Harris will feature in any games with the Saints, there’s a good chance he gets on the field while Fontenot continues to rebuild the Falcons from the ground up. He’s working with few resources in either draft picks or salary cap room, so Harris could very well end up playing a key role in Atlanta. With two games scheduled against the Saints, it’s possible he gets in position to make a play against his old team.

Former Michigan State Football linebacker Chris Frey Jr. re-signs with Hamilton Tiger-Cats of CFL

After an absence from the sport of football, former Michigan State Football linebacker Chris Frey returned to the gridiron in the Canadian Football League for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2019. It looks like his time on the field isn’t done yet, as he announced on New Year’s Day that he will be returning to the team in 2021.

Frey played four seasons with MSU from 2013-17, recording 193 tackles and 7 sacks over that time. He received a preseason tryout with the Carolina Panthers in 2018 before being cut and taking a brief hiatus from the sport.

Delvin Breaux reflects on Saints fallout, misdiagnosed NFL career-ending injury

A misdiagnosed broken leg ended Delvin Breaux’s career with the New Orleans Saints and the NFL, sending him back to the CFL’s Tiger-Cats.

[jwplayer AihxPLHO-ThvAeFxT]

In the ideal world, every player who suits up for the New Orleans Saints would get to go out on top and move on with a sense of closure. That wasn’t the case for Delvin Breaux, the cornerback who appeared in 22 games from 2015 to 2016. Breaux appeared on the Straight-Up Saints podcast with Chris Rosvoglou to discuss his relationship with the Saints, head coach Sean Payton, and how he’s doing up in the CFL.

Breaux, a New Orleans native who starred at McDonogh 35 High School, still remains a supporter of the Saints. He and his family cheered on the SaintsĀ even in defeat in the 2019 playoffs. He said of Saints fans, “The amount of support I got, not just from my family and friends but from the fans, the Who Dat Nation is crazy. I love them man, they’re awesome. They’re my biggest supporters even now.”

While Breaux still treasures his relationship with the fanbase, his connection to the team remains rocky. The misdiagnosed broken leg that derailed his 2017 training camp and ultimately ended his NFL career remains a point of contention for him.

“About that situation, it was a tough time for me and my family,” Breaux said. “It was hard. We didn’t know where to go or what was going to happen. Everything with the misdiagnosis — I had never been through that before. And by going through everything with the doctors with the misdiagnosis, and with Coach Payton, it was a really tough time for me and my family.”

Breaux’s conflict with Payton was something especially hard for him to stomach, to a point where he still feels a sense of betrayal towards the Saints head coach.

He continued, “Me and Coach Payton during that time, we were not on good terms. It was not good. That situation with me and the head coach, man,” “I’m just going to [expletive] lay it out. There was no respect, I was telling him something was wrong with my leg, something was bothering me, I knew something was wrong with my leg.

“And he just said, ‘Oh the doctors say this and that’ and I’m like, hey man, can we address this situation in private? Instead of humiliating me in front of my team? Because that’s embarrassing. That’s something I wasn’t proud of. I felt like less than a man.”

The result of this fiasco was that the Saints fired both of the team orthopedists and overhauled the medical staff, but the damage was already done. Breaux’s NFL reputation was tarnished and this latest injury — combined with his high school neck issue — were too much for teams to take a chance on. He ended up returning to the CFL, where he’s played at an All-Star level and gone on to compete for a Grey Cup championship.

You can find Breaux’s full interview where we’ve embedded it below, or at this link. It does feature some coarse language, so be advised.

Prediction

Tiger-Cats 32, Blue Bombers 26

MoneylineĀ (ML)

The Tiger-Cats (-176) are relatively large favorites over the Blue Bombers (+145) in the championship game. Hamilton went 6-3 on the road over the regular season and Winnipeg was 3-6 before winning back-to-back road playoff games. The two sides will now meet at a neutral site.

BackĀ HAMILTONĀ to end its Grey Cup drought and extend Winnipeg’s by another year.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Hamilton to win would return a profit of $5.68.

Against the SpreadĀ (ATS)

Both teams have been excellent ATS through the postseason. The Ti-Cats are 13-4 overall ATS and 6-2 on the road. The Bombers were 14-6 overall and 5-4 on the road, and covered as underdogs in each of their two road playoff games.

Stick with theĀ TIGER-CATS, who’re layingĀ -3.5Ā points at -110.

Over/UnderĀ (O/U)

Take theĀ OVER 51.5 (-110). The Bombers had played to four straight Overs before falling short of the projected total last week against the Roughriders. The Tiger-Cats went 2-2-1 against the O/U over five games since the beginning of October.

Four of the last five Grey Cups have fallen short of this year’s projected total, but Sunday is calling for clear skies and temperatures above freezing in Calgary. The runways will be clear.

  • The two sides haven’t met in the postseason since the 2016 Eastern Semi-Final, which the Eskimos won 24-21.
  • Tiger-Cats QBĀ Dane EvansĀ will make his first career playoff start. He ranked sixth in the CFL with 3,754 passing yards in 13 games after replacing the injured Jeremiah Masoli. He threw for 21 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.

Prediction

Eskimos 25, Tiger-Cats 23

MoneylineĀ (ML)

Take the value with theĀ ESKIMOSĀ atĀ +200. Harris is the more experienced and more successful of the two starting quarterbacks. Edmonton is coming off a dominating road effort last week over the less intimidating Alouettes while the fear for Hamilton is the week off may lead to some rust.

Edmonton has a more balanced offense and will make life difficult for Hamilton’s No. 1 defense.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Eskimos to win outright fetches a profit of $20.

Against the SpreadĀ (ATS)

The Eskimos are just 6-12-1 overall against the spread, including last week’s cover against the Als, and 3-6-1 on the road. The Ti-Cats were 12-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 at home over the regular season.

EDMONTONĀ is an easy choice to cover a large spread ofĀ 6.5Ā points withĀ -115Ā odds and stay within six points in a loss or win outright.

Over/UnderĀ (O/U)

Take theĀ UNDER 50.5 (-110)Ā with two strong defenses. Expect a slow start in the first half before Edmonton is able to pull away later in the game.
