Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Georgia Southern

Which team wins the leaders battle?

Notre Dame and Georgia Southern both will need to rely on their best players with very little time to rest. The Irish have relied on [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] and [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] in particular to provide their offense this season. Of course, let’s not forget about [autotag]Brooks Coetzee[/autotag]’s power. On the pitching side, [autotag]John Michael Bertrand[/autotag] probably won’t be available for this next game, but that’s why you have options like [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] on your hands.

Meanwhile, the Eagles definitely won’t have ace Ty Fisher available after he threw a complete-game shutout against UNC Greensboro earlier in the day. Perhaps that means Ga’Von Wray will have to pick up the slack? On the flip side, the offense relies heavily on Jesse Sherrill and Noah Ledford, and they surely will receive inspiration from the home crowd. That’s not to take away from the rest of the lineup, but the Irish will be in business if they can hold those two in check.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Texas Tech

Which stars do you prefer?

You can get a pretty good idea of where Notre Dame and Texas Tech stand when looking at their individual leaders. For instance, runs are both scored and driven in frequently by senior captain [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag], so the Irish know where their production most likely will come from. When it comes to pitching, it begins and ends with [autotag]John Michael Bertrand[/autotag], a graduate captain and one of the most decorated pitchers the Irish have had in recent years.

The Red Raiders have a fiery offense that revolves heavily around sophomore Jace Jung, who’s expected to be selected early in this year’s MLB draft. That power is needed to pick up the slack for a team that doesn’t steal a lot of bases. That means the Red Raiders have to rely on the bats themselves to get the runs across. But when they do, pitchers like Brandon Birdsell, another upcoming MLB draftee, benefit.

Notre Dame baseball keeps rolling, sweeps visiting Clemson

The streak is now 8-games!!!

The Irish are streaking again. It’s been a common theme among this Notre Dame 2022 baseball team. With Sunday’s win again Clemson, the Irish have now won their eighth game in a row, their second consecutive ACC series sweep.

It was the bats that carried the Irish on Sunday, scoring nine runs with the big blasts coming from Jared Miller and Ryan Cole. They each hit homers while Carter Putz drove in three and Spencer Myers played two himself.

The trio of pitchers, Will Mercer, Roman Kimball and Alex Rao held the Tiger’s bats down for the majority of the game. Clemson’s Max Wagner tormented Kimball, hitting two home runs on the day but that wasn’t nearly enough as the Irish won 9-3.

The win brings the Irish record to 20-5, and improved their conference record to 8-4. This current streak has brought the Irish back to second place in the Atlantic division, one game behind leader Louisville. Link Jarrett’s team looks to keep the winning streak alive as they welcome in Michigan for their midweek contest on Tuesday at 5:30pm EST.

Bring out the brooms, Notre Dame goes on the road and sweeps FSU

Break out the brooms!!!!

It seems like the extended time during the Irish baseball team’s four-game losing streak lit an fire for the team. They had ended the streak with a mid-week win over Northern Illinois, but those games are typically set for quality teams like the Irish to get a win and work on things.

Well, that work seemed to have paid off this weekend, going into Link Jarrett’s alma mater and sweeping Florida State. A Friday night 2-0 extra inning win was followed up by another nail-bitter on Saturday, with the Irish winning 5-4.

With the series already in hand the visitors could have mailed in the finale and still gone home with a very impressive set against the Seminoles. They wanted more however, and finished off the series sweep with a get-away-day 9-7 win.

Both team traded three-run first innings, but the Irish took the lead in the top of the third with two more runs and did enough to scratch out the win. Aidan Tyrell was the biggest story of the weekend for the Irish, not starting like he has been all season, but being a massive weapon off out of the bullpen. The lefty pitched a scoreless inning Friday night, got the day off on Saturday and then fired four and two-thirds of one-run pitching after stater Austin Temple struggled out of the gate.

Offensively, it was Carter Putz and Ryan Cole each blasting a home-run, with Cole driving in three. Putz and Brooks Coetzee also drove in two runs themselves.

The sweep put the Irish back over .500 in ACC play, 5-4, and extended their overall record to 16-5 on the season. They will most likely rise in the polls when they are updated early this week.

Notre Dame baseball can’t keep late lead, gets swept by Louisville

Things didn’t go the Irish’s way all weekend

The Irish entered the weekend as one of the highest rated teams in the country but host Louisville had something to say about that. The Cardinals took the first two games of the series and Notre Dame was looking to salvage the series finale.

Unfortunately, the Irish lost a late lead and once again fell to the Cardinals on get-away-day, 7-5. The score was tied heading into the top of the seventh and after a Carter Putz single that scored Spencer Myers the Irish took a one-run lead, 5-4. The story of the weekend was the fact that Link Jarrett’s team never gave in but just couldn’t find an answer to quiet Louisville’s bats after taking leads. The Cardinals would the score three runs in the bottom of the eights, to finish off the sweep.

It was a forgettable weekend for the Irish, who have not lost their last three games and have fallen to a 12-4 record. The Irish return to their home diamond on Tuesday as they host Northwestern, before hosting Virginia Tech over the weekend.

Notre Dame Baseball sweeps rain shortened series against NC State

Make that 9-in-a-row

Once again the Irish come out on top of ACC another series, this time just a two-game set against host North Carolina State. Friday evening saw Link Jarrett’s team battle back late to erase a four-run deficit and ultimately get an extra inning win.

Saturday’s game was canceled due to rain, so Sunday’s finale would determine if the Irish would win the series or return to South Bend with a split. Notre Dame would not be denied another series win, notching a 11-4 victory and extend their winning steak to nine games and starting the ACC conference schedule with two wins and no losses.

Although the Irish never trailed on Sunday, the Wolfpack did make it close. After four and a half innings, the visitors led 4-0 but NC State wouldn’t roll over that easily. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Saturday rain out helped the Irish in this situation.

John Michael Bertrand, who was scheduled to start the middle game, instead started the finale, going five innings allowing three runs. Austin Temple, who was supposed to start on Sunday, came in relief of Bertrand and finished out the game with four strong innings, allowing just one run. They combined for nine strikeouts, and the Irish bats did the rest.

A pair of runs in the top of the eighth, followed by a handful in the top of the ninth sealed the game for the Irish. Carter Putz was the catalyst at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jared Miller scored three runs while adding his second steal of the season.

The 11-4 getaway day win improved the Notre Dame record to 11-1 as they once again stand on top of the ACC Atlantic division standings. Three other teams are undefeated in conference play, but each of them (North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia Tech) are on the Coastal division.

The Irish will finally host a game in South Bend, as they welcome in Valparaiso on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm CST.

Notre Dame Baseball comes back against NC State and wins in extra innings

Eight in a row, this time with some dramatics

It wasn’t a game that the Irish were accustomed too, coming from behind has not been something this team has done much of this season. That was the case on Friday night however, as the Irish saw a late 4-0 deficit entering the seventh inning.

That’s when the bats came alive and the Irish scratched out three runs in the seventh and the tying run in the eighth to even the score at four and force extras. It was Carter Putz’s solo home run to start the scoring for Notre Dame and Jack Brannigan finished off the comeback.

The game would extend into the twelfth inning when the Irish bats once again came alive. Four runs in that inning once again highlighted by a long ball, this time by Zack Prajzner.

The story wasn’t just about the Irish bats, it was the bullpen. Starter Aidan Tyrell wasn’t his sharpest, giving up four runs over four innings. Then Alex Rao, Radek Birkholz, Ryan McLinskey and Brannigan took over. They combined for nine innings without allowing a run and striking out 11 batters.

Although the win improved the Irish to 10-1, this game could be looked at as the starting point to another run at the ACC regular season title. If the Irish were to repeat as regular season champs, it would be the first time in program history that feat was accomplished. They have won consecutive conference tournament championships, the last time being the stretch from 2002-2006 when they won the Big East Conference tournament title every year.

The Irish continue their three-games series against the the Wolfpack this afternoon as they try and keep their 8-game winning streak alive.

Late hitting and phenomenal pitching lead Notre Dame baseball in game 1

Late runs and good pitching is a great recipe for the Irish

As legendary Chicago Cub Ernie Banks famously said, “let’s play two,” that’s exactly what the Irish are doing today. With staff ace John Michael Bertrand on the mound, Link Jarrett rode his lefty to 7 innings giving up 2 runs. He set a career high with eleven strikeouts.

The hitters were quiet for the majority of the game, but during the fifth and sixth innings they woke up. Both Carter Putz, fifth, and Ryan Cole, grand slam, blasted homers as the Irish lead went for 2-0 to 8-0 in a hurry. Although Monmouth would manage two runs, the Irish answered with eight more of their own, to finish them off 16-2.

It was exactly what Jarrett wanted to see, his ace going deep into a double-header, saving his bullpen for game two. The Irish will have a quick break before heading back out to the diamond looking to secure a series win and sweep of the double-header.

Notre Dame baseball loses lead late, takes their first loss of the season

Still a very solid opening weekend

The early getaway day start might have given the Irish problems, especially after a quick turnaround from last nights game. It didn’t seem like that was the case early, with Link Jarrett’s team jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the fifth.

Delaware clawed back in the bottom of that inning, scoring two runs to get within a one of the Irish. First baseman Carter Putz would give the Irish a little breathing room, as his RBI single scored outfield Ryan Cole. That would cap the scoring for the Irish as they saw their opponent start their comeback.

Two runs for Delaware in the bottom of the sixth would tie the game at 4, which would then lead to a walk-off win for the Blue Hens in the bottom of the ninth. It wasn’t how Notre Dame envisioned leaving Florida but a 2-1 record is still a great start to the 2022 season.

Notre Dame captains for 2022 season unveiled

Who will lead the Irish into battle this season?

After coming agonizingly close to the College World Series a year ago, Notre Dame is back for more. In order to actually get to Omaha this time, the Irish need people on the roster to rally the others when necessary. Link Jarrett is a terrific coach, but he only can do so much. Sometimes, players have to hear from their own teammates, and that’s where captains come in.

Notre Dame’s baseball players have voted for five of their own to serve as captains for the 2022 season. When asked to comment, Jarrett said the following:

“Each of these guys leads in their own way. They clearly are well respected by their teammates, and being chosen as a captain is an honor they will have ingrained forever. We are very fortunate to have a roster full of wonderful individuals, and these five obviously stand out to all involved.”

Here are the five players who have been elected captains for this season:
