Notre Dame baseball series finale canceled, officially sweep weekend

The sweep is official

The Irish have gotten off to a fantastic start in the 2022 season, picking up from where they left off last year. Yes, there are new characters, but Link Jarrett has the Notre Dame baseball team in a great position to once again be an NCAA Tournament team.

Unfortunately the series finale against Marist was canceled due to impending inclement weather. However, the Irish still head back to South Bend with a series sweep, winning all three games played and holding a 5-1 record. They will be highly ranked once again when the polls are updated early this week.

The Irish are back on the road next weekend, as they head to Minneapolis to face three Big Ten teams, Illinois, Michigan State, and Minnesota in U.S. Bank Stadium.

Late hitting and phenomenal pitching lead Notre Dame baseball in game 1

Late runs and good pitching is a great recipe for the Irish

As legendary Chicago Cub Ernie Banks famously said, “let’s play two,” that’s exactly what the Irish are doing today. With staff ace John Michael Bertrand on the mound, Link Jarrett rode his lefty to 7 innings giving up 2 runs. He set a career high with eleven strikeouts.

The hitters were quiet for the majority of the game, but during the fifth and sixth innings they woke up. Both Carter Putz, fifth, and Ryan Cole, grand slam, blasted homers as the Irish lead went for 2-0 to 8-0 in a hurry. Although Monmouth would manage two runs, the Irish answered with eight more of their own, to finish them off 16-2.

It was exactly what Jarrett wanted to see, his ace going deep into a double-header, saving his bullpen for game two. The Irish will have a quick break before heading back out to the diamond looking to secure a series win and sweep of the double-header.

Notre Dame baseball routs Marist to start their weekend series

A nice way to start a weekend

The Irish didn’t want to let another team think they could hang around with them and it showed against Marist. Link Jarrett’s team jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after the first inning and then cruised to a 20-2 win to open their weekend series.

It was a total team effort as four players (TJ Williams, Jack Zyska, DM Jefferson and Nick Juaire) each had multiple RBIs in the contest. Ryan Cole led the team with three hits, and two players, Zyska and Justin Kapus hit homers.

Starter Aidan Tyrell was magnificent, going seven strong innings, allowing just three hits, no runs and striking out five batters. Sammy Cooper finished off the game and although he did allow two runs, he struck out three finishing off the blow out.

The Irish play two today, their first game of the doubleheader starting at 2pm EST as John Michael Bertrand takes the hill against Monmouth.

The weekend rotation is almost set for Notre Dame baseball

Just one unnamed starter remains

The Irish are coming off a successful opening weekend, winning two of their three games and keeping their high ranking among the polls. As is normal for Midwest baseball teams, Link Jarrett’s team will play their majority of games on the road until the weather turns in South Bend.

This weekend the Irish head off to Greenville, South Carolina as they are set to face Marist and Monmouth. Earlier they announced their starting rotation for the weekend series, as Aidan Tyrell will start the first game, John Michael Bertrand the second and Austin Temple in the finale. The only unknown is the third starter, as Jarrett has yet to name who will toe the mound.

It could very well be a bullpen game for the second half of the double-header, depending on how the first two games play out. Either way, we know at least three-quarters of the Irish’s starting rotation for this coming weekend.
