Top five Ohio State quarterbacks of the last 10 years

Agree or disagree? What would your top five be?

We are starting a new series here at Buckeyes Wire. We are ranking the top Ohio State players at each position over the past 10 years. This includes the 2013 season, but no one who ended their Ohio State career earlier than that.

Up first: quarterbacks. It was a difficult ranking to make because the Buckeyes have been blessed with many star quarterbacks in recent memory. In fact, the top five quarterbacks on this list were in the top five in Heisman voting at least once in their career at Ohio State.

A case for any of these quarterbacks to be higher on the list can be made because everybody has different criteria. My criteria was to take into account what they accomplished with the team but focus primarily on the skills they brought to the table.

Now, let’s get to the list.

Cardale Jones doesn’t report to IFL team, could have another opportunity on the horizon

Cardale Jones Refuses to Report to IFL #GoIFL #GoBucks

The Indoor Football League made what it thought was a splash signing in December when the Massachusetts Pirates signed former Ohio State football national champion quarterback Cardale Jones. The league and the team were so excited they even used the quarterback in promotional material.

Unfortunately, the artist formerly known as 12 Gauge has been listed with the refused-to-report designation on the IFL transaction website.

Rumors are circulating that Jones passed on the opportunity to play professional football again due to an offer from the Big Ten Network or another media outlet. If true, Jones will be a great addition to any sports coverage team, but it would have been nice to see him tossing the football one more time.

Buckeyes Wire did reach out to the Massachusetts Pirates via text and was told that Jones said he was “offered a job with the Big Ten Network and decided to go in that direction,” but we’ll just have to wait and see where he lands.

Jones had an interesting pro career that most recently included a stint with the Edmonton Elks of the CFL. Before that he was one of the headliners in the XFL 2.0 as the gunslinger for the DC Defenders. His NFL career started when he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills and he had cups of coffee with the Los Angeles Chargers and Seattle Seahawks.

Buckeye fans looking to tune into the IFL can still watch former Ohio State safety Brendon White, a Buckeye legacy who also signed with the Massachusetts Pirates. White was at Ohio State from 2017 until 2019 before he transferred to Rutgers. White’s father was another Buckeye safety, William White, who was a star for Ohio State in the 1980s.

As we hear anything else about Jones’ future, we’ll bring it to you.

Urban Meyer has an interesting pick for a statue at Ohio Stadium

Who would be your pick as the first former player to get a statue at Ohio Stadium? #GoBucks

Ohio State has an illustrious history as one of the blue bloods of college football. The Buckeyes have six Heisman trophy winners as well as numerous All-Americans and NFL draft picks. So if a statue were to be erected of a former player at Ohio Stadium, who would you pick? The only two-time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin? The first great Buckeye, Chic Harley? Well, how about Cardale Jones?

Former Ohio State and national championship head coach Urban Meyer believes Jones is the answer. Of course, Jones gave Buckeye fans one of the most memorable runs in OSU football history after the third-string QB was elevated to starter heading into a must-win Big Ten Championship game. The rest, as they say, is history.

Meyer was a guest on the “All Things Covered Podcast” and was asked about the topic.

“To me, they ought to build a statue of Cardale Jones,” Meyer said. “Beat Wisconsin 59-0, beat Alabama and then goes on to beat Oregon. And that’s one of the greatest runs of certainly Ohio State history.”

While Jones was the quarterback on record, it was Ezekiel Elliott and a stout defense that carried Ohio State to the 2015 title. However, what Jones did was beyond impressive. To come in the middle of the Michigan game after J.T. Barrett went out with injury and then lead the team to three improbable victories… well, that’s the stuff of legends.

Whether he deserves a statue or not, especially before some other Buckeye royalty is sure to be a hot topic of debate.

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones back in professional football

In case you missed it, Cardale Jones is back in professional football. (@IndoorFL) #GoBucks #GoIFL #IndoorFootballLeague

The man, the myth, the legend, Cardale “12 Gauge” Jones is back in professional football. Jones signed with the Massachusetts Pirates of the Indoor Football League. Most Ohio State Buckeye fans remember Jones from his playing days during the 2014 national championship run and victory.

After a successful collegiate career, Jones went on to have an up-and-down career in the NFL. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills and had cups of coffee with the Los Angeles Chargers and Seattle Seahawks before giving the DC Defenders of the XFL and the Edmonton Elks of the CFL a shot.

It is not very often the Indoor Football League adds a star such as Jones, but he will no doubt make plays for the Pirates who last won the United Bowl in 2021. Unfortunately, there are no IFL teams in the state of Ohio, but their games can often be found on YouTube.

So, find a way to dial up these games and watch an Ohio State favorite continue to play in the professional ranks.

Two concerning videos regarding Ohio State and name, image and likeness

The issues could be fixed fairly easily but at some costs #GoBucks

The Buckeyes have one of the biggest athletic department budgets in the nation but it seems like there is a big disconnect between what [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] Athletic Director [autotag]Gene Smith[/autotag] wants to do regarding Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) with his program.

He has gone on record to say that the university will not give money to players, it has to be through collectives, like the one former national championship-winning quarterback [autotag]Cardale Jones[/autotag] has a hand in, THE Foundation.

As we saw during the early signing period, prospects all across the country were lured by upfront payments and schools like Oregon and Alabama reaped the benefits of 5-star prospects and transfers.

As I scoured the Twittersphere today, I came across two separate videos that go over Ohio State’s NIL strategy or lack thereof, and I outline my takes from each of them.

Cardale Jones and Desmond Howard get into Twitter war of words over upcoming Heisman ceremony

The former Ohio State quarterback didn’t take kindly to Howard’s verbal jab at last year’s ceremony.

The Heisman finalists were announced recently and as expected, C.J. Stroud has received another invitation to New York City for the ceremony and trophy presentation. If you remember, Stroud was in the Big Apple last year at this time, where he finished fourth behind winner Bryce Young of Alabama, Aiden Hutchinson of Michigan, and Kenny Pickett of Pitt.

Receiving an invite to NYC for what most consider the most prestigious award in all of sports is quite an honor in and of itself. One that can be celebrated regardless of team affiliations. And certainly, that should be the case when it comes to television personalities hosting the event.

However, that wasn’t the case in 2021 when former Heisman winner and Michigan Wolverine, Desmond Howard tried to make a joke at Stroud’s expense. While talking to Hutchinson, Tim Tebow made a comment about Pickett standing between the two rivals, and then Howard directed a comment toward the Buckeye QBs saying Pickett might offer protection “better than his offensive line.” referring to the loss and number of times Michigan got to Stroud.

Stroud didn’t look amused and Buckeye Nation was not happy either. Now after finding out that the OSU quarterback would be back in New York for the second year in a row, former Ohio State QB, Cardale Jones called Howard out telling the former Heisman winner in so many words to keep his comments to himself.

Howard fired back in an all-caps tirade with a condescending tone and referenced back to Jones’s now-infamous tweet about not coming to OSU to “play school”.

Most Buckeye fans felt that Howard was out of line with the comment. It is doubtful that it was meant as a serious jab, but more likely a poorly executed joke. Sometimes things sound good in your mind, but once they come out of your mouth… not so much.

Here’s hoping that this year’s ceremony can take place without any verbal barbs regardless of intention.

The Heisman ceremony will take place this Saturday evening, December 10 on ESPN starting at 8 p,m. ET.

Fortnite Tournament features eight former Ohio State stars

#FortniteGame Tournament features eight former Ohio State stars #OvMFortnite #GoBucks

This Sunday, streaming superstar and Michigan football fanatic, NICKMERCS has partnered with Columbus’ own, eFuse and Epic Games to host one of the most exciting Fortnite tournaments in history and the first tournament to feature both current and former Ohio State and Michigan football players for up to $55,000 in prizes.

“Gaming deserves a place in rivalries as grand as this,” said Matthew Benson, CEO of eFuse. “Alongside our partners are Epic Games, we’re going big with a tournament featuring the rivalry’s biggest names, putting real money on the line and broadcasting this out to millions of viewers. Our proprietary platform was built exactly for major moments like this and we can’t wait to see how the gaming community responds.”

“Football and gaming have long been synonymous,” said Zach Beebe, Founder of NIL Management, a management and consulting agency supporting college football’s top stars. “The Rivalry Week Fortnite tournament is celebrating the past while looking to the future and building new traditions within gaming and modern entertainment. Our collegiate clients are super excited and can’t wait to battle. This series will be one for the history books!”

It gives me chills to think of this rivalry extending to yet another arena and my mouth dropped when Team Ohio State was announced. There will be 16 players on the roster, with eight being former stars and eight being current ones. To get you ready if you’re into this sort of thing (and you should be) here are eight former Buckeye stars jumping on the sticks to defend the great state of Ohio.

The tournament will air Sunday, November 20, at 7 p.m. ET on NICKMERCS’s MFAM Gauntlet Twitch channel: twitch.tv/mfamgauntlet.

Five of Ohio State’s most memorable games vs. Wisconsin

Wisconsin Badgers v. Ohio State Buckeyes football series history #GoBucks

This Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be facing off against the Wisconsin Badgers in Columbus, Ohio, and this will be the 85th time that these two programs have played each other. It makes sense that these two schools see so much of each other considering that they are conference opponents.

Ohio State is currently 61-18-5 in this series and their largest margin of victory came in 1979 under Earle Bruce when the Buckeyes rolled Wisconsin, 59-0. They also achieved the same score in 2014 under Urban Meyer in the Big Ten championship game (yes, that one). Unfortunately, the largest loss Ohio State faced against the Badgers was in 1999 under John Cooper when the Buckeyes lost 42-17.

Ohio State’s longest win streak was 21 victories from 1960-1980, but its longest losing streak was three from 1913-1915. We aren’t going to dive into every game Ohio State has ever played Wisconsin, but here are five memorable ones.

Cardale Jones signs with Canadian Football League team

Cardale Jones is back in the game, this time north of the border.

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is back in football, but north of the border this time. And while he’s back in the game, he replaces another former OSU quarterback, J.T. Barrett on the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.

Barrett has ping-ponged around during his career and was placed on the retired list because of an injury he suffered in the spring that would have had him miss the entire season.

For Cardale Jones, it’s another chance to show what he can do. The last time we saw 12-gauge, he was playing for the D.C. Defenders during the XFL 2020 season. He started out that experiment on fire but then showed some inconsistent play as the season wore on. We also got a peek of Jones throwing passes to OSU receivers during the Buckeyes’ pro day back in March.

It’s a little bit of history repeating itself with Jones replacing Barrett, and we’ll have to see if there’s some sort of championship at the end of this one too just like the 2014 Ohio State season.

WATCH: Cardale Jones, others, remember Dwayne Haskins at candlelight vigil

Cardale Jones was among the many that paid their respects at a candlelight vigil Tuesday night for Dwayne Haskins.

Tuesday night was rough, but it was very much needed at Ohio State. That’s because there are a slew of people that want to pay their respects for former Buckeye quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who passed away over the weekend after getting struck by a dump truck on a South Florida highway.

There were plenty of fans and friends that showed up at Ohio Stadium for a candlelight vigil, and some of them were royalty. In fact, guys like Cardale Jones and Master Teague were on hand to say a little something to the crowd and honor a human being they know was a compassionate, gentle human being.

The Ohio State Football Twitter account shared some of those words in a Twitter video released earlier this week that we thought would interest you. Let the below play and get remember No. 7.

R.I.P Dwayne. Your legacy and the memory of who you were on and off the field will live on forever.
