Highest rated Ohio State football players in college football video game history

Highest rated Ohio State football players in college football video game history #GoBucks

A teaser trailer dropped for the new upcoming EA Sports College Football video game and despite seeing very little gameplay and details, the anticipation is at an all-time high. At this point, gamers who have waited a decade just want the playoffs and transfer portal added and would be happy with the graphics from the past generation of consoles.

According to the trailer, we can expect a full reveal this May and the game to hit shelves this summer, but if you are like me, you are too much of a pessimist to believe it. Nonetheless, it is fun to take this opportunity to look back on some of the highest-rated Ohio State football players in this game’s history. The craziest part of this list is that a now current coach on the staff is tied as the highest Buckeye ever rated.

The last game came out in 2013 and it is a real shame we missed out on studs like Nick Bosa, Chase Young and of course C.J. Stroud, but it will be interesting to see who some of the top guys are this year.

Questions at quarterback? First-time Ohio State starters in recent years have been outstanding.

It’s been quite amazing really with the level of production first-year quarterbacks have had at Ohio State recently. #GoBucks

There’s a big question mark for Ohio State entering the 2023 season, and it has everything to do with who will take the place of outgoing, two-time Heisman finalist, CJ Stroud.

So far, there’s not been an answer to that because, according to head coach Ryan Day and the coaching staff, both Kyle McCord and Devin Brown have been worthy of time under center, with neither separating himself. Now just a week away from the first game of 2023, it’s looking like both will get playing time and that this thing is going to go into the season.

At some point though, you have to think either Brown or McCord is going to be named the starter. Either way, it’s a year in which Ohio State is ushering in a new player at the most important position on the field.

A lot of the national media has tempered expectations for the Buckeyes because of the unknowns at quarterback, even though OSU is still inside the top five in most preseason polls and opinion rankings.

But hold the phone. Is a new quarterback really a problem at Ohio State, especially under Ryan Day? Believe it or not — and most Buckeye fans know this — first-year quarterbacks at Ohio State have not only been solid, but surprisingly out of this world.

We thought we’d take a look at some of first-year starers over the most recent of years, because it’s really been quite amazing the level of production those guys have had.

Top five Ohio State quarterbacks of the last 10 years

Agree or disagree? What would your top five be?

We are starting a new series here at Buckeyes Wire. We are ranking the top Ohio State players at each position over the past 10 years. This includes the 2013 season, but no one who ended their Ohio State career earlier than that.

Up first: quarterbacks. It was a difficult ranking to make because the Buckeyes have been blessed with many star quarterbacks in recent memory. In fact, the top five quarterbacks on this list were in the top five in Heisman voting at least once in their career at Ohio State.

A case for any of these quarterbacks to be higher on the list can be made because everybody has different criteria. My criteria was to take into account what they accomplished with the team but focus primarily on the skills they brought to the table.

Now, let’s get to the list.

Fortnite Tournament features eight former Ohio State stars

This Sunday, streaming superstar and Michigan football fanatic, NICKMERCS has partnered with Columbus’ own, eFuse and Epic Games to host one of the most exciting Fortnite tournaments in history and the first tournament to feature both current and former Ohio State and Michigan football players for up to $55,000 in prizes.

“Gaming deserves a place in rivalries as grand as this,” said Matthew Benson, CEO of eFuse. “Alongside our partners are Epic Games, we’re going big with a tournament featuring the rivalry’s biggest names, putting real money on the line and broadcasting this out to millions of viewers. Our proprietary platform was built exactly for major moments like this and we can’t wait to see how the gaming community responds.”

“Football and gaming have long been synonymous,” said Zach Beebe, Founder of NIL Management, a management and consulting agency supporting college football’s top stars. “The Rivalry Week Fortnite tournament is celebrating the past while looking to the future and building new traditions within gaming and modern entertainment. Our collegiate clients are super excited and can’t wait to battle. This series will be one for the history books!”

It gives me chills to think of this rivalry extending to yet another arena and my mouth dropped when Team Ohio State was announced. There will be 16 players on the roster, with eight being former stars and eight being current ones. To get you ready if you’re into this sort of thing (and you should be) here are eight former Buckeye stars jumping on the sticks to defend the great state of Ohio.

The tournament will air Sunday, November 20, at 7 p.m. ET on NICKMERCS’s MFAM Gauntlet Twitch channel: twitch.tv/mfamgauntlet.

Five of Ohio State football’s most memorable games vs. Penn State

Five of Ohio State football’s most memorable games vs. Penn State #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes will face the Penn State Nittany Lions for the 37th time in program history on Saturday at noon ET. Against its conference opponent, Ohio State is 22-14.

The largest margin of victory for the Buckeyes came in 2013 when Ohio State put the hammer down, 63-14, with Urban Meyer as head coach. The largest margin of victory for Penn State came in 1994 when the Nittany Lions won, 63-14.

The first meeting between the two programs was in 1912 when the Buckeyes lost to Penn State, 37-0. The longest win streak by Ohio State against the Nittany Lions is five. The active streak dates to 2017.

But what are some of the most memorable meetings between the two? Here are five of them as we take you down memory lane.

Highest rated Ohio State football players in “NCAA Football” video game history

Highest rated Ohio State Buckeyes in NCAA video game history #GoBucks #NCAAFootball

The NCAA video game series has been a pillar in many households since 1998 and for some even before that during the days of “Bill Walsh College Football.” It was downright devastating when EA Sport stopped producing the game after “NCAA ’14.”

The game — or a version thereof — is scheduled to return in time for the 2023 season and I just simply can’t wait. It got me wondering who the ten highest-rated Ohio State football players were in the video game’s history. It is important to remember that no names were used for the rosters, but we can make some safe assumptions that QB No. 2 would have been Terrelle Pryor. It’s part of the reason EA Sports had to stop making the game.

Another item of note is that it is extremely hard to find any rosters before the 2004 version, but I feel I exhausted my options and found the best results. I also want to note that the first “Bill Walsh College Football” game didn’t even have Ohio State and instead had an odd copycat team named Columbus. There were no individual player ratings and therefore that game was not used. Oh, and don’t forget, NCAA games were labeled a year in advance so the 2005 version of the game is actually for the 2004 season. Got it? No, maybe — sort of?

Let’s move forward anyway with the top ten rated Ohio State football players in the history of the “NCAA Football” video game franchise.

Every Ohio State football seasoning-opening starting quarterback for the last 20 years

The Ohio State opening day starter for every Buckeye team for the last twenty years. How many of these do you remember?

In case you missed it, redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud was named the starting quarterback for Ohio State and its opening game against Minnesota on Sept. 2. There was an arms race of sorts between Stroud, Jack Miller, and Kyle McCord, but at the end of the day, Justin Fields’ backup from last season was given the keys to the kingdom because he checked all the boxes Day and staff were looking for.

The quarterback competition at OSU is always a hot one when a new signal-caller is taking over, and it was no different this season, or the previous seasons before it.

We’re going on a journey of taking a look back at the opening day starting quarterback for Ohio State over the last twenty years. Hopefully, it’ll jog your memory on all of the playmakers and surprises at quarterback on the banks of the Olentangy when the seals were broken on each season.

Here’s we go, including stats for the game and each quarterback’s season.

Braxton Miller and Troy Smith looking to start prep academy in Ohio similar to IMG Academy

According to the Springfield News-Sun, former Ohio State QBs Braxton Miller and Troy Smith want to start an IMG-type prep school in Ohio.

Count this in the bucket of surprises coming during the college football offseason. According to the Springfield News-Sun, former Ohio State quarterbacks Braxton Miller and Troy Smith are interested in starting a prep school similar to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

The site the two are interested in is the Old Urbana University site that was closed in 2020 by Franklin University used it as a satellite school prior to the pandemic hitting. Before that, Urbana University fielded numerous collegiate teams across various sports before it was sold in 2014. Now, it looks like there could be another purpose for the land if the two Buckeye legends have anything to do with it.

“My Uncle Paul reached out to me about the acquisition with the campus shutting down,” Braxton Miller told the News-Sun. “It was a great opportunity to make my dream come true to have a school in the Midwest, do something big in the Midwest, to bring sports to the Midwest in that format.”

Covering more than 50,000 square acres, the old Urbana campus has 22 buildings including dormitories, a theater, and unused land that could be perfect for the needs of a sports academy.

“Having something like this that already has all the facilities that we need, it was a great idea, a great opportunity for us to jump on it and try to attack the process of creating our own school,” Braxton Miller said.

IMG Academy started in 1978 but as only a tennis academy. Since then, it has grown to one of the top training grounds for some of the top athletes in the country across multiple sports. Some of the best prospects come from all over the country to attend IMG Academy and college recruiters flock to the campus often to recruit and sign some of the best prep talent anywhere.

There’s still a lot of work to do, but having something similar to that in Ohio could be a boon for Ohio State and other Midwestern schools who often have to head down to Florida to cherry-pick some exceptional talent that often likes to stay in the southeast.

“It’s not all the way up to par yet, but we’re in the process of making it happen,” Miller said according to the report. “There’s a lot of things in between with the acquisition of the campus, and we’re taking our time with that. We’re crossing our Ts, dotting our ‘I’s and making the right decisions as far as acquiring something like this to create our own prep school.”

We’ll keep our eyes on this as more details emerge, but for now, file this away into the peaked interest column.
