Ohio State recruiting scouting report: Julian Sayin

Ohio State recruiting scouting report: Julian Sayin #GoBucks

Ohio State football had another dominant recruiting class and was a consensus top-five class in the country. Once again, the class features more than a few heavy hitters on the offensive side of the football. The Buckeyes also added a surprising “transfer,” who will be coming into spring as a true freshman in Julian Sayin.

Name: Julian Sayin

High School: Carlsbad (Carlsbad, California)

Height: 6 feet, 1 inch

Weight: 195 pounds

Position: Quarterback

Strengths

Sayin is a different level prospect, much like when we discussed Jeremiah Smith, Sayin checks all of the boxes of an elite recruit. Sayin has the arm talent to hit every blade of grass with excellent touch. Every time the football leaves his hand, it looks perfect.

Ted Ginn Jr. has bold proclamation about Ohio State vs. Florida BCS game in 2007

We wished this too Teddy #GoBucks

The 2006 [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag]team entered the [autotag]BCS national championship[/autotag] game as a touchdown favorite and appeared poised to run away with the title.

Heisman Trophy winner [autotag]Troy Smith[/autotag] led an offense that boasted star receiver [autotag]Ted Ginn Jr.[/autotag] among others. The Glenville pair made their marks in Columbus, but couldn’t bring home a title.

Recently, Netflix released “[autotag]Swamp Kings[/autotag],” a documentary looking at Florida’s rise and fall under former Buckeye head coach [autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag]. If you watched like I did, it brought out some not so favorable memories about that title game.

It seems Ginn watched as well and took to X, the website formerly known as Twitter, to let everyone know his feelings.

It’s hard to argue with Ginn. The Buckeyes offense looked completely off without their best deep threat after he was hurt celebrating his opening kickoff house call. Unfortunately, this what if scenario for Ohio State fans still stings to this day.

Ohio State with four players named to Walter Camp Award watch list

Just four?!? That’s a lot of scarlet and gray on the list. #GoBucks

It’s safe to say that the [autotag]Walter Camp Award[/autotag] is extremely high on [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] players entering the 2023 season.

Why is that? Well, it announced its preseason watch list of 45 total players, and the Buckeyes have four of those, the most for any one school in the country.

If you didn’t know, the award is given annually to the best player in the country as judged by the Walter Camp Foundation. Last year USC quarterback [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] took home the honors. The last Ohio State player to win the Walter Camp Award was quarterback [autotag]Troy Smith[/autotag] in 2006, who also took home the Heisman also.

Find out below which four Buckeyes made their preseason watch list.

Former Ohio State stars, including one Heisman winner, hired onto same high school football team

Three former Buckeyes on the same high school coaching staff is a dangerous thing. #GoBucks

There is life after football and the Ohio State football program is well aware of that. When [autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag] was hired, he brought in Real Life Wednesdays, a program that brought professionals to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center from across different professions to prepare Buckeyes for their post-playing careers.

For some, playing ends but life with football doesn’t. Just look at the current staff with offensive coordinator Brian Hartline and graduate assistant James Laurinaitis, as prime examples.

Not every former Buckeye gets their start at the collegiate level though. Some have to work their way up the ladder. That is the case for [autotag]Chase Farris[/autotag], [autotag]Troy Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Doran Grant[/autotag]. The three former OSU players are joining forces at Elyria Catholic High School in Elyria, Ohio.

Farris is the lead as the head coach with Smith — the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner — as his associate head coach. Grant is also on the staff as an assistant coach along with being the head of strength and conditioning.

With so much football experience, the Elyria Catholic players are in good hands. Look for some bigger crowds cheering on the Panthers this fall.

This Sunday, streaming superstar and Michigan football fanatic, NICKMERCS has partnered with Columbus’ own, eFuse and Epic Games to host one of the most exciting Fortnite tournaments in history and the first tournament to feature both current and former Ohio State and Michigan football players for up to $55,000 in prizes.

“Gaming deserves a place in rivalries as grand as this,” said Matthew Benson, CEO of eFuse. “Alongside our partners are Epic Games, we’re going big with a tournament featuring the rivalry’s biggest names, putting real money on the line and broadcasting this out to millions of viewers. Our proprietary platform was built exactly for major moments like this and we can’t wait to see how the gaming community responds.”

There will be 16 players on the roster, with eight being former stars and eight being current ones. To get you ready if you’re into this sort of thing (and you should be) here are eight former Buckeye stars jumping on the sticks to defend the great state of Ohio.

Five of Ohio State football’s most memorable games vs. Iowa

Five of Ohio State football’s most memorable games vs. Iowa #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes will face the Iowa Hawkeyes for the 65th time in program history on Saturday at noon ET. Against its conference opponent, Ohio State is 46-15-3.

The largest margin of victory for the Buckeyes came in 1950 when Ohio State put the hammer down, 83-21, with Wes Fesler as head coach. The largest margin of victory for the Hawkeyes came during the last meeting in this matchup in 2017 when Iowa won, 55-24.

The first meeting between the two programs was in 1922 when the Buckeyes lost to the Hawkeyes, 12-9. The longest win streak by Ohio State against Iowa was 16 wins from 1963 to 1980. Hopefully, this Saturday will mark a new streak.

Here are five of the most memorable matchups between the two ‘eyes.

Face of the position at Ohio State: What Quarterback do you think of?

Who player do you think of when someone says Ohio State quarterbacks? Check out the nominees and then vote for who is the face of the quarterback position at OSU. #GoBucks

It’s the doldrums of almost summer and you are most likely stuck between queueing up last year’s Rose Bowl victory over Utah on the DVR for the umpteenth time, reading rankings and listicles that include Ohio State, and yearning for the start of the college football season.

Sounds like a perfect time to kick off a series we are embarking upon here at Buckeyes Wire. We call it the “face of the position” and it’s really exactly as it sounds. When you think of a position group at Ohio State, who do you think of? From quarterback to linebacker, to placekicker and beyond, OSU has some of the most iconic and historical college football players that have taken their place among the best in the game.

However, one player stands out above all else when you shroud them behind the colors of scarlet and gray, and that’s where we are going to ask for your assistance.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting players that are in the running for the face of a position at Ohio State and asking for your vote in a Twitter poll to have one player identified as the one you think immediately at that position.

First up is quarterback. It’s a position that has become perhaps the face of the program over the last few years, so you’ll see a pretty recent slate of names nominated on this one. Take a look at the four we’ve highlighted and then move on to vote in our Twitter poll at the end. We can only fit four players on the poll, so feel free to write in a candidate in the comments to vote for another player, and we’ll tabulate it accordingly.

We’ll keep voting up for five days, and at the end of it, we’ll have an article revealing who the face of the quarterback position is historically at Ohio State.

History of Ohio State quarterbacks in the CFL

These former Ohio State quarterbacks had a career in the CFL. #GoBucks

As you have probably have heard by now former Ohio State star quarterback, J.T. Barrett is getting another shot to prove his worth as a professional, and this time with the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League. After having a cup of coffee with a few NFL teams and a stint in The Spring League, Barrett has an opportunity to start in the CFL for one of its more desperate franchises.

The CFL is a great league that has a ton of success. It has been around since 1958 and there have been a few former Buckeye gunslingers that have found success in the past up north of the border. The following are three other notable Buckeyes that had a stint slinging the rock in the CFL.

History of Heisman Trophy winners at Ohio State

Remembering the seven Heisman Trophies an Ohio State player has taken home. #GoBucks

There are few programs that have the history Ohio State football has when it comes to Heisman Trophy winners. In fact, the Buckeyes are tied for first with seven Heisman Trophies. They join Oklahoma and Notre Dame. OSU also has the only two-time Heisman winner, running back Archie Griffin.

That’s before we even go down the path of how many Buckeye players have been invited to New York as a finalist.

With the latest Heisman on the doorstep of being awarded this weekend, and with Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud one of four finalists included in all the fun in New York, we thought we’d remind you about the seven times OSU took home arguably the greatest individual award in all of American sports.

Here are the seven times (and counting) an Ohio State player has won the Heisman Trophy along with career stats thanks to OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

WATCH: Former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith reveals that he calls Jim Tressel ‘dad’

I don’t know that we’ll ever know the depth of some of the conversations these two had.

There was a little get-together of former Ohio State royalty this past weekend that may have slipped by your attention. The first-ever Charg1ng Heisman Elite Football Camp for youth took place in Urbana from July 9-11 and it was hosted by former Buckeye stars Troy Smith and Braxton Miller.

But it wasn’t just them. The duo brought in another Buckeye legend, former head coach Jim Tressel, to speak to the group and provide them with some pretty cool life lessons.

After Tressel spoke, we got a glimpse into how much he has meant to Troy Smith from a football and role model standpoint. Smith got into a little hot water during his time at Ohio State and Tressel was always there to support and encourage him. So much so that Smith stepped to the microphone over this past weekend and said he calls the former sweater vest-wearing coach “dad.”

“I call him my dad for a reason,” Smith said. ” I call him my dad because, specifically, when I was at Ohio State, if it wasn’t for him I would have been lost. I wouldn’t have been able to play quarterback — I wouldn’t have been able to play football at all.”

Now, I don’t know that we’ll ever know the depth of the relationship between Smith and Tressel, but you can bet there were a lot of hard conversations, but a lot of love and support as well. That sure sounds like a lot of really good dads I know as well.
