Trio of Huskers selected in new mock draft

Three Cornhuskers are projected to be selected in a new mock draft. But who and where??

A new mock draft from CBS Sports projects a trio of Huskers selected during the upcoming NFL draft.  The first Nebraska player off the board, Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, is projected to be taken with the 82nd overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons. That would slot him as a third-round selection. The Huskers haven’t had someone drafted that high since the 2016 draft when Maliek Collins and Vincent Valentine were selected in the third round. The last time Nebraska had a defensive back taken that high was in 2014 when the Saints took Stanley Jean-Baptiste.

The next player selected via this mock draft is offensive lineman Cam Jurgens who is projected to be selected with the 96th overall pick by the Denver Broncos. This is not the first time Jerkins has been projected in a mock draft going to the broncos. They need a center, and Jurgens could step in and fill that role.

Finally, the last husker selected in this mock draft is Linebacker JoJo Domann. Some “draft experts” have expressed concern about his size and have wondered if he’s big enough to play linebacker at the professional level. However, his ability to defend in the passing game could make up for that deficiency as the NFL continues to value the tight end in the middle of the field.

A name not projected but could be called on draft day is Wide Receiver, Samori Toure. Toure has seen his interest rise after a good workout at Nebraska’s pro-day. It would be a third-day selection, but it’s another name we could see when the NFL Draft takes place one week for now.

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay’s 3-round mock draft for the Broncos

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have the Broncos going CB, LB, TE with their first three picks in the NFL draft.

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay recently teamed up for a three-round NFL mock draft, with the ESPN draft analysts alternating picks (subscription required for link to mock).

Kiper got Denver’s first pick, No. 64 overall at the bottom of the second round. With the pick, the Broncos add Nebraska cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. With just five cornerbacks on the roster at the moment, Denver could certainly use reinforcements at the position.

McShay used the team’s next pick (No. 75 in the third round) to select Wisconsin inside linebacker Leo Chenal, who would likely compete for a starting job right away with the Broncos.

Kiper then used the team’s remaining third-round pick (No. 96) to add Virginia tight end Jelani Woods, who would help Denver replace Noah Fant’s roster spot in theory. Woods had a breakout season last year, catching 44 passes for 598 yards and eight touchdowns.

This year’s draft will be held in Las Vegas from April 28-30.

Husker receives high marks in recent Mock Draft

A former Husker received high marks in a recent NFL mock draft.

Mel Kiper Jr has been covering the draft every year since 1984 and this year is no different. He recently released his “new predictions for top 64 picks in Rounds 1 and 2” and former Husker Cam Taylor-Britt was named on that list. The cornerback was projected to be taken with the 62nd pick in the second round by the San Fransisco 49ers. Taylor-Britt has impressed in his last several workouts and word is he’s sliding up multiple team’s draft boards. Kiper says “Taylor-Britt makes sense because he has some raw tools with which to work and has the skill set to play multiple spots.” In 2021, he started 12 games, 11 pass breakups and one interception for Nebraska. Will it happen, time will tell and the answers are just days away

Mel Kiper projects DB to 49ers in updated mock draft

A versatile defensive back prospect with tons of speed went to the #49ers in Mel Kiper’s 2-round mock.

Mel Kiper Jr. on Wednesday released a new two-round mock draft. He projects San Francisco to take Nebraska defensive back Cam Taylor-Britt with the 61st overall pick.

Taylor-Britt has very good size and measured in at 6-foot, 197 pounds. He looks even bigger on tape though and flies downhill with sub-4.4 speed to deliver some big hits from the safety spot. Nebraska also had Taylor-Britt line up at cornerback where he also had a lot of success.

Here’s what Kiper had to say about the selection:

This is the 49ers’ debut pick in this draft, but this late in Round 2, they’re not going to be guaranteed to get a starter. They can take a need position, sure, but they shouldn’t reach to make it happen. Taylor-Britt makes sense because he has some raw tools with which to work and has the skill set to play multiple spots. He had 11 pass breakups last season. San Francisco signed Charvarius Ward but should add corner depth.

Positional versatility in the 49ers’ secondary is a plus, but they’re in a place with their secondary that a prospect like Taylor-Britt who can play multiple spots is extra enticing. They don’t necessarily need a starter right away, so they can afford to move him around to see where exactly his best fit is in their defense. If he emerges as a starting option at safety in Year 1, that would just be a bonus.

Taylor-Britt brings a ton of experience as well. He started 29 games across his final three seasons and played in 11 games on defense and special teams during his freshman campaign. By 2021 he’d earned team captain status. In 42 career games Taylor-Britt posted 140 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, six interceptions and 27 pass breakups.

If the 49ers do select a defensive back with their first pick, a player like Taylor-Britt would make a lot of sense.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 39 Cam Taylor-Britt

Nebraska DB Cam Taylor-Britt is up next in Unpacking Future Packers, a countdown previewing the 2022 NFL draft for Packers Wire.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Green Bay Packers need to improve the depth at safety behind Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage Jr.

Even if the Packers are able to lock up Rasul Douglas, they could stand to add another cornerback to the mix behind Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Douglas.

A player that could help address both those “needs” is Cam Taylor-Britt. The Nebraska cornerback checks in at No. 39 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

Taylor-Britt was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks at Park Crossing High School in Alabama.

As a true freshman in 2018, Taylor-Britt recorded four tackles on special teams. In 2019, Taylor-Britt started seven games at safety and three at cornerback. He finished the season with 49 tackles, three tackles for loss 1.5 sacks, three interceptions, six pass deflections and he forced four fumbles. The following season, Taylor-Britt started seven games at cornerback and recorded three tackles for loss, two interceptions, and six pass deflections.

This past season, Taylor-Britt started all 12 games and recorded 51 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and 11 pass deflections. He also blocked one field goal.

“Taylor-Britt could have declared for the NFL Draft after his 2020 season and he risked coming back and not being able to replicate his success or even get ignored by the quarterback,” Brian Johannes, the NFL Draft analyst for Corn Nation, said. “Instead, Cam was able to not only replicate his 2020 success but build off of it.”

Taylor-Britt is a versatile cornerback that can play anywhere in the secondary. He’s scheme versatile but is at his best playing off coverage. He thrives when the action is in front of him, which is why some teams may view him as a safety. He tracks well playing off coverage. Taylor-Britt has explosive drive quickness and does a good job of using his length to challenge wide receivers at the catch point.

“I think his best position in the NFL is going to be at safety,” Johannes said. “With so many NFL teams employing three safeties they need guys who can cover in the slot, be a run defender and even play some back in zone coverage. I think Cam can do all three of those. So him playing a strong safety would work. That being said, I could see him being a Cover 3 cornerback who asks their corners to be physical and run deep, or in a zone heavy scheme.”

Taylor-Britt has outstanding ball skills. He finished his career at Nebraska with six interceptions and 27 pass deflections. Taylor-Britt takes good angles to the ball and uses his length to play through the wide receiver’s hands.

“Cam is tremendous at playing the ball in the air,” Johannes said. “His ability to make deflections and break-up passes is something that really stands out. In 2020 he made big pass breakups against Purdue and Rutgers that sealed Nebraska’s wins, while in 2021 against Michigan he had a couple of big pass breakups on deep throws down the sideline that helped keep Nebraska in that game.”

Taylor-Britt flies downhill in run support. He’s not afraid to stick his nose and hunts for the big hit. That “hunger” to make the big hit can get him into trouble though. There are times when he flies downhill and doesn’t come to balance, leading to some missed tackles. He has a knack for separating the ball from the ballcarrier, with four career forced fumbles.

“He is not afraid of contact and willing to come up and make a big hit,” Johannes said. “The problem is he’s not a great tackler and sometimes tries to lay a big hit instead of making the tackle.”

Taylor-Britt plays with a ton of energy. He’s tough as nails and is going to make you feel his presence all game with his physicality and non-stop energy. He’s a tone-setter in the secondary and he has shown a knack for making game-changing plays (six career interceptions, four forced fumbles, nine tackles for loss, and 27 pass deflections).

“Cam has good but not great physical traits and he’s able to compensate for his lack of elite skills with his physicality and ball skills,” Johannes said. “Because he doesn’t have elite speed he will get beat and be a step or two behind the wide receivers on deep routes, but since he has good leaping ability and can time his jumps he’s been able to leap up and still break up passes.”

Fit with the Packers

With his versatility, Taylor-Britt could fill multiple roles in Green Bay’s secondary. He can play on the perimeter. He could play safety, which would allow Savage to come down and play in the slot. On top of all that, he would bring tremendous special teams value.

“I would love to have him on my NFL team,” Johannes said. “I think he’s a late day two, early day three guy who gives a defense a tough, versatile defender that can play multiple roles.”

Taylor-Britt could go late on day two or early on day three. With his versatility, special teams experience, and ball skills, Taylor-Britt would provide quality depth in Green Bay’s secondary, while also being a key member on special teams.

Cleveland Browns seven round mock draft simulation reviewed 2.0

Our guy @JoshKeatley16 did two simulations, allowing the computer to pick for the Browns, and reviewed the selections. Here is the second:

It may be the end of the Cleveland Browns football season, but it is just the beginning of draft season and I love me some draft hype. We here at Browns Wire are trying to do our best to provide out reactions to the most popular mock drafts being published by some of our favorite pundits, but most of them just supply the first round or if we are lucky the first three rounds, but if you are like me, you need more.

Our friends at The Draft Network have a wonderful mock draft simulator tool and I was curious to see what they had the Browns select. This will be the second time we have run this exercise and it has surprisingly turned out some different results. Just like last time, the first slide will be The Draft Network (TDN) selection and the second will be my preference.

Opening score of the 2021 NCAA season is a punt return safety

Big Ten football is back, and it’s weirder than ever! A punt return safety to start the 2021 season off is living proof.

In case you were missing Big Ten football… well, it’s back, folks. And it’s given us the weirdest opening score of a college football season… well, maybe ever.

Let’s set the scene. With 4:20 (how appropriate) left in the first quarter of the contest between Nebraska and Illinois, the Fighting Illini punted to the Cornhuskers. Punter Brendan Franke got off a 55-yard bomb, and cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt tried (in a manner of speaking ) to return it. Instead, butted up against his own end zone as he was, Taylor-Britt tried to throw the ball out of said end zone, which is a no-no. It’s also a safety.

It’s the first two points of the Bret Bielema era in Illinois, and a rough start for Nebraska head coach Scot Frost, who is already on several hot seats.

The Big Ten’s top five Cornerbacks heading into 2021

Sevyn Banks is the next stud cornerback at Ohio State, but how high does the #Buckeye rank.

Ohio State football kicks off in less than a month, and we have been rolling through the best of the best of the Big Ten at each position. We have already completed our list of top five quarterbacks, running backs, wide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguards, centers, defensive ends, defensive tackles, inside linebackers and outside linebackers.

Despite the loss of Shaun Wade and a few embarrassing performances last year, I have a ton of faith in the Ohio State Buckeyes defensive backfield and believe that their number one corner can be one of the best in the nation. The Big Ten has some intriguing corners and we give you the top five below.
