LSU gets back in the win column with a run-rule victory over Northwestern State

LSU responded well after losing the No. 1 spot in the rankings this week.

For the first time this season, the LSU Tigers entered a game not ranked as the No. 1 team in the country. The Tigers played as if all the pressure was off as they beat Northwestern State 14-4 in a run-rule victory on Tuesday night.

Northwestern State scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, but after that, the rout was on. In the bottom of the second, LSU hit back-to-back-to-back homers. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag], and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit those homers to give LSU a 3-1 lead after two innings.

Northwestern State answered with a solo homer of their own in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but LSU would score 7 in the bottom of the inning due to a White single, Travinski hit by pitch, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] two-RBI single, and a three-run bomb by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to make it 10-2.

LSU and Northwestern State traded blows in the bottom of the fifth and the top of the sixth before the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI double from White and an RBI double by Travinski to make it 14-3. In the top of the seventh, Northwestern State scored a run but that is all they could manage as the Tigers won 14-4 in seven innings.

With the win, LSU moves to 38-10 overall. The Tigers will host Mississippi State at Alex Box Stadium this weekend. The first pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday night.

Auburn takes a wacky Game 2 to tie the series against LSU

LSU will look to avoid its first series defeat of the season in Sunday’s Game 3.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] pitched a gem on Friday as the Tigers took Game 1 over Auburn. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] took the mound on Saturday night to try to secure the series win, but LSU ultimately fell short in an 8-6 loss and will look to avoid its first series defeat in Sunday’s rubber match.

LSU got on the board first in the top of the second when [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit an RBI single to center to score [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and give LSU an early 1-0 lead. LSU scored again in the top of the third when [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] and give LSU a 2-0 lead.

Auburn came roaring back in the bottom of the fourth inning when a plethora of LSU walks led to three scored runs as Auburn took a 3-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, LSU re-took the lead when [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single to make it 4-3 LSU.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Auburn batted around as they scored four runs to give them a 7-4 lead. Travinski answered the big inning in the top of the seventh with a solo homer to cut the lead to 7-5.

Auburn led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer of their own to increase their lead to 8-5. In the top of the eighth, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] scored on a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 8-6 Auburn.

Auburn shut LSU down in the top of the ninth to win the game 8-6. With the loss, LSU moves to 37-9 overall and 16-6 in conference play. Game 3 will be Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

LSU sweeps Alabama with win in offense-heavy Game 3

The Tigers prevailed to secure a weekend sweep in a Game that featured 22 combined runs.

LSU entered Sunday’s matchup against Alabama with a chance to sweep the Tide. The Tigers did just that with a 13-11 win in Game 3.

Alabama started off strong in the top of the first as they scored a run on a fielding error before [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] got the Tigers out of the inning. In the bottom of the second, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run bomb to give LSU its first lead of the ballgame at 2-1.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] extended the lead to 3-1 with a “Crews Missile” in the bottom of the third inning.

The Tide came back strong as they scored three runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to give them a 7-3 lead thanks to some good hits and a couple of errors by LSU. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers came roaring back with some runs of their own as Crews and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] both hit RBI singles with the bases loaded before [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] walked in runs with bases loaded to tie the game.

Jones then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers an 8-7 lead. [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] then hit an RBI single to extend the LSU lead to 9-7 after five innings.

The Crimson Tide scored a run in the sixth and the seventh inning to tie the game 9-9 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Milazzo gave the Tigers the lead again when he hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] to make it 10-9 LSU. Crews then walked with the bases loaded to make it 11-9 Tigers.

In the bottom of the eighth, Thompson and Kling both hit solo homers to make it 13-9 Tigers.

Alabama hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth as it attempted to make a comeback, but that is as close as the Tide would get. With the win, LSU moves to 35-8 overall 15-5 in conference play.

Its next game will be Tuesday night at Southeastern Louisiana. The first pitch for that game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball takes series over Alabama with comeback win in Game 2

After surviving a scare against Alabama in Game 1, the Tigers had to overcome an early hole to clinch a series win.

After surviving a scare against Alabama in Game 1, the Tigers looked to take the series with a win in Game 2. Despite a rough start that saw it fall behind early, LSU pulled out a 12-8 win to take the series.

The game didn’t start out well as Alabama scored two runs in the top of the first inning before LSU scored a run in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third inning,

Alabama scored four more runs to chase [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] from the mound and give them a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a three-run Tommy Tank to right field to make it 6-4 Alabama after three innings.

The Tide hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 7-4. In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 7-5. [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] followed that with a three-run bomb to give LSU its first lead of the ball game as the Tigers led 8-7 after six innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, Crews scored on a safety squeeze by [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] to increase the lead to 9-7.

In the top of the eighth inning, Alabama scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 9-8. In the bottom of the eighth, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run bomb to increase the Tiger lead to 11-8. Crews followed that with an RBI single to make it 12-8 LSU.

No. 1 LSU baseball falls to Nicholls to drop back-to-back midweek games

The Colonels won in Baton Rouge for the first time since 2015.

How would LSU look coming off of their first conference series sweep of the season and an emotional comeback to beat Ole Miss?

The Tigers welcomed Nicholls into Baton Rouge for a midweek game on Tuesday as the Tigers looked to rebound after losing an in-state midweek game last week. However, they suffered another defeat with a 6-5 loss to the Colonels, who won in Baton Rouge for the first time since 2015.

For the first five innings, Nicholls had LSU on the ropes. In the top of the second inning, Nicholls drew first blood on a sacrifice fly to give them a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, a two-RBI single off of [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] increased their lead to 3-0 heading into the sixth inning. That is when LSU clawed their way back into the game.

Batting in the cleanup spot and playing as a Designated Hitter tonight, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] hit a solo homer to right field to start the scoring. [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] then walked with bases loaded, [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice RBI, and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers their first lead of the ball game.

Nicholls would not go quietly into the night as they scored a run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game 4-4. In the top of the ninth, Nicholls scored two runs on an RBI single and a fielding error to make it 6-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Jones started the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot to cut the lead to 6-5. Frey and Dugas hit back-to-back singles to put the tying run on second base with zero outs. [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] struck out for out number one. [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was intentionally walked to load the bases and put the tying run with one out. Beloso popped up into a double play to end the ball game and the Tigers lost 6-5.

This loss marks the second week in a row that LSU has lost a midweek game to an in-state opponent. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 32-8 on the season. LSU will welcome the Alabama Crimson Tide into town this weekend as the Tigers look to rebound once again.

Hayden Travinski lifts LSU to a series sweep with clutch go-ahead homer in 9th

The Tigers looked like they were going to miss out on their first SEC sweep of the year, but the decision to pinch-hit Travinski in the ninth paid off.

LSU entered today’s game with a shot at sweeping the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford and a pinch-hit three-run homer from Hayden Travinski lifted LSU to a win!

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] got the Tigers on the board first when he hit an RBI single up the middle to score [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] and give LSU a 1-0 lead early. Ole Miss tied it up in the bottom of the inning when they hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1.

Ole Miss took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when they hit an RBI single to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead after two innings. LSU re-took the lead in the top of the third when Jordan Thompson hit an RBI single to score Crews. [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] was thrown out at home during the play. [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] followed that with an RBI single to give LSU a 3-2 lead after three innings.

It was his longest start of the season and put him in line to win the game if LSU pulled it off.

He retired the first batter he faced before the Rebels hit a double to put the tying run on second with one out. Guidry got the next hitter to fly out at the wall and the Rebels found themselves down to their last out. The final batter popped up to the second baseman, and the Tigers won 7-6.

Pitching woes doomed the Tigers in their 8-3 midweek loss to the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. It was the first time LSU has lost a midweek contest this season.

It was great to see [autotag]Javen Coleman[/autotag] make his first appearance on the mound for LSU since having Tommy John surgery. That was about the only bright spot on the night for LSU.

In the bottom of the first inning, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] hit an RBI Triple to right field to score [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and give LSU an early 1-0 lead.

[autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] came into pitch in the top of the second inning and the Ragin Cajuns greeted him by scoring two runs and taking a 2-1 lead. LSU tied it up in the bottom of the second when [autotag]Whit Merrifield[/autotag] grounded out but [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] scored to make it 2-2.

[autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] came into pitch in the top of the third inning and Louisiana-Lafayette hit a two-run blast off of him to give them a 4-2 lead. Then the wheels fell off in the top of the fourth inning when LSU misplayed two flyballs (one by [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] and one by Crews) that ended up scoring two more runs for ULL and increasing their lead to 6-3 after four innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Morgan hit a two-run blast to cut the lead to 8-5 with no outs but that is as close as LSU would get to coming back in this one.

With the loss, LSU moves to 29-7 for the season. The Tigers will hit the road to Oxford, Mississippi, for a weekend series against the Ole Miss Rebels. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Jared Jones leads LSU baseball to series win over Kentucky

The Tigers survived a thrilling Game 3 to take the series on Saturday.

No. 1 LSU vs No. 12 Kentucky — A rubber match at Alex Box Stadium. It doesn’t get much better than this.

After an hour-long rain delay, Game 3 got underway Saturday, and in a back-and-forth game, the Tigers emerged with a series win after a 7-6 victory.

Just like in Game 2, the Tigers drew first blood. In the bottom of the second inning, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a solo shot to left field to give LSU a 1-0 lead after two innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, Kentucky cut the lead in half when they scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 2-1. The Wildcats scored again in the top of the fifth when they tied the game up on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU took the lead back on an RBI groundout by [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Kentucky tied the game on an RBI groundout to the shortstop after a successful double steal. In the bottom of the sixth, Jones hit his second homer of the game to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

Errors doom the Tigers in Game 2 loss to Kentucky

Mistakes ultimately cost LSU a chance to clinch the series against the Wildcats on Friday night.

LSU entered Game 2 against the Kentucky Wildcats on Friday night with a chance to win the series, but three errors from the defense doomed it in the end as the Tigers lost 13-10.

LSU got things started in the bottom of the first inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] RBI double to make it 1-0 Tigers after one inning.

The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the top of the second inning when they hit a two-run blast to right field to make it 2-1. The Tigers answered back in the bottom of the inning when [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single to score [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag].

In the bottom of the fourth inning, LSU scored three runs thanks to an RBI double from Crews and a two-run homer from White to give LSU a 6-2 lead.

Kentucky fought back in the top of the fifth inning when it hit an RBI single, and then [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] misplayed a flyball with bases loaded. That allowed three runs to score and the batter to get to third base. He was then brought in by the next hitter, and just like that, Kentucky had a 7-6 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Kentucky scored again on an RBI single with bases loaded, a bases-loaded walk, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to make it 12-6 Kentucky heading into the bottom of the seventh. Tigers have a home run derby in Game 1 win over Kentucky

LSU’s bats came alive as the Tigers scored 16 runs in a Game 1 win.

The No. 1 team in the land welcomed the team with the No. 1 RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) in the country for a weekend showdown, and LSU walked away with a 16-6 run-rule win.

The Tigers entered the game after splitting a two-game series on the road against South Carolina and then beating Tulane. Kentucky entered after dropping a series to Georgia.

In the bottom of the first, it was bombs away in Baton Rouge. In the top of the second, Kentucky scored a run after an error helped the Wildcats get runners on the corners with only one out. LSU got that back and more in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Jones was walked to bring in a run. [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] followed that with a grand slam to right field that exited the stadium. After two innings, LSU led 11-1.

The home run derby continued in the bottom of the third inning when Beloso hit a three-run homer to right field to give LSU a 14-1 lead after only three innings.

Kentucky would not go quietly into the night however as they scored two runs on Skenes in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 14-3. The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 14-5 and keep the run rule at bay.

In the top of the seventh inning, Kentucky scored another run on an RBI single. Dugas was injured trying to dive for the ball at second base and had to leave the game. In the bottom of the seventh, [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] scored on a passed ball to give LSU a 15-6 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Milazzo hit an RBI single to left field to secure the 16-6 run-rule victory.

With the win, LSU moves to 28-5 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The Tigers will go for the series win Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
