NFL Combine preview for Texas football players

Several Texas players can raise their draft stock at the NFL combine.

The NFL combine is under a week away, and several Texas Longhorns football players have plenty to gain at the showcase. The team has 11 players set to compete in a series of events that give tangible measurements on players’ athleticism.

The combine is set to take place Feb. 26-March 4. Defensive tackles and linebackers start competing at 2 p.m. CT on Feb. 29. Defensive backs and tight ends will compete on March 1, quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers will participate March 2 and offensive linemen will take part on March 3.

Defensive tackles T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy will join linebacker Jaylan Ford on Feb. 29 with high stakes on the line. Ford was thought to be the best prospect of the bunch heading into the season, but Sweat and Murphy have become early potential picks in their own right.

Wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell have plenty on the line in the showcase. Worthy will have an opportunity to separate from the pack with a strong 40-yard dash time. His draft position could rely heavily on it.

Mitchell, who many view as a potential first- or second-round draft pick, can confirm positive views about his ability with a good showing in early March.

Texas will look to put up several draft picks in its best NFL draft class in recent memory.

Former Saints draft pick, Alabama football star takes high-profile college coaching job

Former Saints draft pick and Alabama football star Vinnie Sunseri has taken a high-profile college coaching job at Washington:

Here’s some good news for a former New Orleans Saints draft pick: Vinnie Sunseri has taken a high-profile college coaching job as the Washington Huskies safeties coach, where he’ll be tasked with developing the next generation of defensive backs at a West Coast powerhouse with national championship ambitions.

Things have come full circle. Sunseri was a standout at Alabama during his own college playing career, and Alabama’s decision to hire Washington’s former head coach Kalen DeBoer led to a lot of turnover for the Huskies coaching staff.

Sunseri, 32, was picked by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft. But he struggled to get on the field after dealing with a series of injuries. He finished his NFL playing career with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.

After hanging up his cleats, Sunseri began a coaching career at Alabama as a graduate assistant; he returned to the Patriots in 2020 to get more experience, where he first worked with the defense before moving to the offensive side of the ball for three years coaching running backs. Now he’s going back to his roots with much more responsibility under new Washington head coach Jedd Fisch.

The job comes with high expectations. Washington is fresh off a national title bid, and the school has sent many defensive backs to the NFL draft in recent years; Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon were both top-50 picks in 2022, while Elijah Molden was selected at No. 100 overall (followed by Keith Taylor in the fifth round) in 2021. Byron Murphy and Taylor Rapp were each second-round picks in 2019 with Jordan Miller also drafted in the fifth round. Sunseri will be charged with recruiting and developing players to follow in their footsteps. Good luck to him.

10 preliminary candidates to be the Lions top NFL draft pick at No. 29 overall

Here are 10 prospects who look to fit the bill as the potential first-round pick for the Detroit Lions in 2024.

This year’s NFL draft will be a different experience for Detroit Lions fans. The Lions don’t pick in the top five overall, or even the top 10. Heck, Detroit isn’t slated to pick in the first 25 slots.

Brad Holmes and the Lions will make their first selection in the 2024 NFL draft at No. 29 overall (barring trades, of course). It makes forecasting what player the Lions will select infinitely more difficult.

Coming out of Senior Bowl week, there is a better feel for how the NFL views a lot more prospects in terms of draft range. Holmes and the Lions have proven they care not about what other teams, or draft media, care about draft range, but we now also have a better idea of what the Lions are looking for in a player.

In that spirit, here are 10 prospects who look to fit the bill as the potential first-round pick for the Detroit Lions in 2024 as of Super Bowl week.
