Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa declares for the 2024 NFL Draft

Here’s our update on the draft status of Taulia Tagovailoa.

More quarterback bloodlines are about to be injected into the NFL as Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa, brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa declares for the 2024 NFL Draft. This comes after Tagovailoa previously sought a waiver to his extend his eligibility for a sixth season.

Tagovailoa exits the college level as the Big Ten’s all-time passing leader and a three-year starter for the Maryland Terrapins. During Tagovailoa’s final season, he put up the best numbers of his career with 3,377 passing yards, 30 total touchdowns, and maintained a quarterback rating of 145.1. While the team as a whole failed to meet expectations, Tagovailoa was a standout.

Not quite in the same talent range as his brother, Tagovailoa is still an experienced quarterback with enough arm strength to be a high-level backup at the NFL level. With high-level processing, plenty of starting experience, and good intangibles, Tagovailoa should find himself drafted sometime during day three as a potential long-term backup during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa enters transfer portal

The Big Ten’s all-time passing leader has entered the transfer portal

In an interesting move on Friday, Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovaiola entered the transfer portal. However, as of Friday, Tagovaiola has no available eligibility to use at another school.

The former four-star quarterback and Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback spent his true freshman season at Alabama in 2019 before spending each of the last four seasons with the Maryland Terrapins.

During his career at Maryland, the Hawaii native set the Big Ten All-Time Passing yards record with 11,256 passing yards. He also has 76 career touchdown passes as a Terrapin to 37 interceptions. This past season, he completed 66% of his passes for 3,377 yards and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

In order to play next season, Tagovailoa would need to be awarded an extra season of eligibility from the NCAA. If an additional season is awarded, he’ll be immediately eligible to play as a graduate transfer. There is still the possibility he chooses to enter the NFL Draft this spring.

Taulia Tagovailoa enters transfer portal, which could affect Malachi Nelson’s future

Taulia Tagovailoa is not expected to receive a waiver for another year of eligibility, but let’s see what happens.

Maryland Terrapin quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has entered the transfer portal, but with a twist. The quarterback is seeking a waiver to play an additional season. If the waiver is not granted, Tagovailoa would presumably enter the NFL draft. If he gets the waiver, however, the portal could change not just for Tagovailoa, but for Malachi Nelson, who has entered the portal after transferring out of USC.

First, let’s go to College Sports Wire’s story on Tagovailoa:

“Tagovailoa is technically out of eligibility at the moment, but (247Sports’ Chris) Hummer reported that he is seeking a waiver for an additional year. According to the report, the former Maryland quarterback will argue he burned a redshirt year in 2019 with the (Alabama) Crimson Tide when he played five games but twice only came on the field for two snaps.”

It doesn’t seem likely that the waiver will be granted. However, if the waiver is granted, the speculation surrounding Tagovailoa is that he might be interested in the Miami Hurricanes. Malachi Nelson and Miami have also been linked.

Tagovailoa going to Miami — if it happens — would presumably bump Nelson elsewhere. This might be why Nelson visited Boise State.

If Nelson continues to swing and miss in the portal, there is still a chance he could withdraw from the portal and return to USC as Miller Moss’s backup for 2024. That would not be a bad outcome for the Trojans.

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa could enter the portal but he is out of eligibility

This would open Pandora’s box.

According to a report from Maryland’s 247Sports site, head coach Mike Lockley discussed the possibility of Taulia Tagovailoa entering the transfer portal. It isn’t a shocking development given the state of college football at the present time, he is just out of eligibility.

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman completed his sixth year of play in 2023 using this past season as his COVID year. All players received an extra year of eligibility regardless if they opted out of the 2020 season. Former Oregon Duck and Texas Tech Red Raider quarterback Tyler Shough is set to play his sixth season in 2024.

The difference is that Tagovailoa used his COVID year in 2023. There isn’t an obvious path to earning an extra year, or is there?

As Chris Vannini of The Athletic says, this would open a can of worms at the collegiate level.

There are several valid points on both sides of this sort of argument but it feels like the high school recruits and athletes that are in their first four seasons that would suffer. There are only so many scholarships to go around, so if we change the rules there seems to be someone that has to pay for it all.

Greg Schiano talks up Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa: ‘Certainly a pro quarterback’

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano praises Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Greg Schiano believes that Taulia Tagovailoa will be playing at the next level, with the Rutgers head coach calling the Maryland quarterback a future professional.

And depending on what Tagovailoa decides to do come Maryland’s Bowl game, Saturday might be the quarterback’s last game as a Terrapin.

Tagovailoa has been nothing short of sensational during his four years at Maryland. Tagovailoa followed head coach Mike Locksley from Alabama to the Big Ten and the move has certainly worked for both parties.

Locksley had been on staff at Alabama and recruited Tagovailoa. Given that Tagovailoa was buried on the Crimson Tide’s depth chart, the reunion with Locksley in Maryland made sense.

Tagovailoa joined Maryland in 2020 and has been a dominant quarterback in the Big Ten over the last three seasons.

On the season, he has 3,016 passing yards with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

“He does just about everything you would ask a quarterback to do. He throws from the pocket well. He throws the quick game well. He throws the deep ball well,” head coach Greg Schiano said.

“Then when things break down, he creates well. He also, you can tell, runs the offense with precision and ease. He looks very, very comfortable doing it. He’s been doing it for a lot of years. He was with Locksley down in ‘Bama and he came there. He’s been in this system for a long time and you can tell.

“He’s a very dangerous quarterback.”

It is high praise from Schiano, a former NFL head coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tagovailoa is a strong presence in the pocket for Maryland, but he is perhaps most dangerous when he moves and throws on the run. While he isn’t a dual-threat quarterback, he certainly can extend plays and he is patient in his progression when given time.

There isn’t a throw he can’t make which means that Rutgers is going to need to dial up the pressure and make Tagovailoa uncomfortable in the pocket on Saturday if they are going to have a chance against Maryland.

“Offensively, they have got pros on the offensive line, at receiver, at tight end and they certainly have a pro quarterback. He is as dangerous as any quarterback in America, and defensively, they are really athletic. They have got nine takeaways. When you look at a team that has a bunch of takeaways, they get after the passer, they run to the ball. Their two safeties are as good as there is in America and they are a good football team. They hit a stretch in the middle of the year, don’t really know. But they played really well Saturday and had every opportunity to knock off Michigan,” Schiano said.

“So we know what we’re in for and it’s going to be a battle. We both find ourselves in a similar position at 6-5, and a lot of respect for what they do, and looking forward to playing the game,”

Huskers preparing for pass-happy Maryland

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are preparing to host the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are preparing to host the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday at Memorial Stadium. A significant focus of the preparation has been on the offense of the Terps.

Maryland boasts the second-ranked passing offense in the Big Ten, with an average of 280 passing yards a game. Starting quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has thrown for 2,486 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the year.

Head coach Matt Rhule says that his team is excited by the challenge.

“Yeah it’s a heck of a challenge and an opportunity. The great thing about Maryland is that all of our guys know how good they are. They’ve seen them and they know who Maryland is. It was 17-17 against Ohio State late in the third quarter. They are an excellent, excellent football team. To me the challenge for us has always been to humbly prepare for the other teams and the opponent but to never make it about the opponent. To not sit there and say, ‘What if they do this and do that?’ Instead make it about us.

Through nine games this season, Nebraska has been surrendering 221 passing yards a game while boasting the third-best rushing defense in the country, only allowing 70.4 rushing yards per game. Rhule said that his team knows what to expect this weekend.

“So again the lessons always go back to just, ‘Hey guys trust yourself. Trust your technique. Do your assignment. Play hard. Play together.’ And we are probably going to have a chance to win games. And even though we didn’t do that the whole game it’s still 20-17 late in the game. So you still had a chance with the ball to win the game. So let’s just build off of that. It’s a really explosive offense. It’s a real challenge for our guys. They know what’s coming and they won’t be surprised. They will have to play their best to have a chance against this offense.”

Nebraska will next take the field this Saturday when the Huskers host the Maryland Terrapins. Kick-off is at 11:00 a.m. and can be seen on Peacock.

Lewis Cine and NFL draft QBs: Purple Daily on Draft

On the latest episode of Purple Daily on Draft, the discussion centers around Lewis Cine and the 2024 NFL draft quarterback class

The Minnesota Vikings found a way to squeeze out a win against the Chicago Bears by a score of 19-13. They did so without safety Lewis Cine, who was technically a healthy scratch for the game.

Now, Cine was coming off a hamstring injury he suffered against the Los Angeles Chargers, but he was removed from the injury report on Friday after practicing in full. Did they hold him out for precautionary reasons? How concerned should we be about Cine?

The NFL draft is approaching soon and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah went to watch USC take on Notre Dame live in South Bend. What can we take away from this? Was he there to watch Caleb Williams or other prospects?

To finish the show, the guys answer questions from listeners. What other quarterbacks are intriguing for the Vikings? What about Tua Tagovailoa’s little brother at Maryland?

All of that and more on the latest episode of Purple Daily on Draft, dropping every Monday afternoon on the Purple Daily YouTube channel.
