Austin Reaves named Big 12 Player of the Week

Calling game and dropping 41? Yeah, that will earn you Big 12 Player of the Week.

Calling game and dropping 41? Yeah, that will earn you Big 12 Player of the Week.

Reaves averaged 27.0 points on 51.6%, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals in Oklahoma’s games against Texas and TCU.

Reaves willed the Sooners to victory on Saturday scoring 41 points and bringing Oklahoma back from an 18-point halftime deficit, the largest halftime deficit to result in a road win in Big 12 history.

The honor comes less than 24 hours after Reaves was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and was named an All-12 Honorable Mention.

On the season, Reaves is sixth in Big 12 scoring averaging 14.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.

Reaves’ performance on Saturday was the sixth 40-point output by a Sooner in the Lon Kruger era. Trae Young had four such performances in 2018 and Buddy Hield had a 44-point outburst in 2016.

With the win on Saturday, Oklahoma finishes third in the Big 12 regular season, giving them the No. 3-seed in the Big 12 Tournament. The Sooners face 6-seeded West Virginia at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday on either ESPN or ESPN2.

Spencer Dinwiddie, Joe Harris unable to win All-Star Weekend events

A lot went down during NBA All-Star Saturday. But for the Nets, neither of their players involved in the festivities took home hardware.

Joe Harris had the chance to be the back-to-back 3-Point Contest champion. Spencer Dinwiddie was given the opportunity to take back his title as the NBA Skills Challenge champion. Neither Nets player was able to bring any NBA All-Star Weekend hardware back to Brooklyn this year.

Dinwiddie was matched up against Miami Heat forward and 2020 NBA All-Star Bam Adebayo in the first round of the Skills Challenge. Not only did Adebayo beat the Nets point guard, but he also went on to win the whole thing, knocking off Indiana Pacers forward and fellow 2020 NBA All-Star Domantas Sabonis in the final round.

Just like his Nets teammate in the Skills Challange, Harris was unable to make it out of the first round of the 3-Point Contest. But he still finished with a solid score of 22.

Sacramento Kings shooting guard Buddy Hield walked away as the winner of the 2020 3-Point Contest.

Buddy Hield catches fire late to win the 3-point contest

Buddy Hield came through CLUTCH.

Man oh man, what a finish. We don’t normally look at the 3-point contest as the most exciting event during All-Star weekend’s Saturday night, but maybe we should after today.

After we got Davis Bertans out of the way, Buddy Hield and Devin Booker went head to head in the final round of the contest and, fam, let me tell you, they did not disappoint.

Buddy Hield ended up snatching the W right out of Book’s hands. Booker got to 26 points after hitting three money balls on his final rack. Normally, that feels like enough. Tonight? It just barely wasn’t.

Hield got to 27 points on the very. Last. Rack.

That finish was sooooo good. Buddy Buckets had the arena going nuts, including everybody on the bench. AND the announcers.

Shoutout to Hield, man. Maybe he is the next Steph Curry? Nah, too far, probably.

WATCH: Buddy Hields wins NBA 3-Point Contest on final shot

The former Oklahoma guard put on a clinic in Chicago on Saturday night, winning the NBA three-point contest on his last shot.

Buddy. Buckets.

The former Oklahoma guard put on a clinic in Chicago on Saturday night, winning the NBA 3-Point Contest on his last shot.

Hield needed 26 to tie Phoenix Suns guard, and 2018 NBA 3-Point Contest winner, Devin Booker. Hield closed the door with a money ball as time expired to crown himself as the 2020 three-point contest champion.

In his opening round, Hield tied Booker for first place with 27 points.

Hield is in his fourth season in the NBA and set a record for most 3-pointers made through three seasons. So far this season, Hield is averaging 20.4 points per game. From deep, Hield is averaging 3.8 makes per game and 9.9 shots attempted per game good for a 38.5 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Hield was a part of the 2016 Final Four team and was drafted sixth overall in the 2016 draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. He won the Naismith Trophy following that Final Four run, awarded to the men’s college basketball player who achieves great success on the court.

Buddy Hield wins NBA 3-Point Contest on NBA All-Star Saturday night

Buddy Buckets back at it again. Former Oklahoma star Buddy Hield just won the NBA 3-Point Contest on NBA All-Star Saturday night.

Buddy Buckets back at it again.

The former Sooners star and current Sacramento Kings guard lit up NBA All-Star Saturday night on his way to winning the NBA 3-Point Contest.

Buddy Hield got off to a slow start in round one before nailing his final six shots to advance to the final round with a score of 27 points. Up against Davis Bertans and Devin Booker in the final round, Hield needed to score 27 again to win the competition.

Heading into the final rack of the final round, the former Oklahoma star needed eight points to defeat Booker. Hield hit his first three, missed his fourth, then swished his fifth to win the NBA 3-Point Contest.

Oklahoma counterpart Trae Young was also a participant, but failed to make it out of the first round.

The Bahamas native becomes the first Oklahoma alumni to win the NBA 3-Point Contest. Hield has made the third-most 3-pointers in the NBA this season and is shooting 38.5 percent from three. He led the Sooners to the Final Four during the 2016 NCAA Tournament while taking home the Naismith Trophy presented to the men’s college basketball player who achieves great success on the court.

Hield will not be competing in the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night.

Trae Young, Buddy Hield to compete in NBA 3-point contest

Former Oklahoma standouts Buddy Hield and Trae Young will be a part of the three-point contest as part of the NBA’s All-Star festivities.

Oklahoma as a state has had plenty of sharpshooters come and go since the state was just Indian Territory. The tradition continues during the 2020 NBA All-Star weekend.

Former Oklahoma standouts Buddy Hield and Trae Young will be a part of the three-point contest as part of the NBA’s All-Star festivities.

So far this season Buddy Hield has connected from deep 186 times, good for 37.6% through 50 games. The Sacramento King guard is averaging 20.3 points per game so far this season.

While at Oklahoma, Hield shot 31.7% in his four-year career and averaged 25.0 points per game his senior season.

Joining Hield, Trae Young has also lit it up from downtown. Young is shooting 36.7% from three. In just his second year Young was named an All-Star starter, making him the third Sooner to be named an All-Star. Young is 29.2 points and 9.0 assists per game.

The 3-point contest will be broadcasted live on Saturday, February 15th at 8p.m. CT on TNT.

Preview: Thunder travel to take on Sacramento Kings

Oklahoma City heads to the West Coast on Wednesday night to play the Sacramento Kings who are looking for their third-straight win.

It might be the Oklahoma City Thunder who has built the reputation of the comeback kings, but its Sacramento that made NBA history with their win over the Timberwolves on Monday night.

Down by 27 at one point, the Kings trailed Minnesota by 17 with 2:49 left to play before mounting a furious rally that would see them send the game into overtime, eventually coming away with a 133-129 win.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, since play-by-play data started being tracked in 1996-96, NBA teams were 0-8,378 when trailing by 17 or more in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime.

Of course, Oklahoma City is already intimately familiar with the Kings’ ability to mount a comeback.

The last time these two played, Sacramento was down by 11 in the fourth quarter before coming back to beat OKC on a Bogdan Bogdanovic 3-pointer. Chris Paul was able to get off a shot at the buzzer but it was off the mark.

Paul missed Monday’s game against Dallas due to personal reasons just a day after the death of his close friend Kobe Bryant.

According to Erik Horne of The Athletic, Paul is back with the team in Sacramento and will address the media during postgame.

Paul penned an emotional goodbye to Bryant that he posted on his Instagram page earlier this week.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to fully process it. My parents have always said everything happens for a reason and its in God’s plan. But this one is different. Broken fingers, torn Achilles, it didn’t matter. You overcame it all!! You were DIFFERENT! Sometimes we competed so hard against each other that you could never tell how I was always watching YOU!! I needed to see how much better I needed to get and how much harder I needed to work! The love you had for the game was nowhere near the love you had for YOUR girls!! All 5 of them!! And Gigi, who we had already prearranged her marriage with lil Chris, is as beautiful and feisty as she could ever be!!! As I’ve watched you in retirement, as happy as you’ve ever been, I’ve sat back and prayed and hoped that my baby girl will look at me the way Gigi looks at you!!! I Love You and will miss you with all my heart my brother!!! All my love to Vanessa and all the families during this time 🙏🏾 #Mamba4Life #Mambacita

Tributes to the late Lakers star have been pouring in since the news of Bryant’s death broke Sunday afternoon.

Oklahoma City honored Bryant with a moment of silence before their game on Monday, and after tip-off, both the Mavericks and the Thunder took 8-second and 24-second violations in tribute.

Sacramento’s Buddy Hield, who wears No. 24, just announced on Wednesday that he will continue to wear the number to honor Bryant’s memory.

“I wanted to be like him, I wanted to work like him, run like him, put the shooting sleeve on like him,” Hield said following shootaround on Wednesday. “I feel like it would still be great to honor him by wearing his number. Unless the NBA says we can’t wear his number, I don’t see any reason.”

Oklahoma City and the Kings will tip-off at 9 p.m. CT in Sacramento.

Prediction

Timberwolves 116, Kings 112

Moneyline (ML)

Both teams have been downright terrible recently; the Kings are 3-7 in their last 10 games and the Timberwolves have lost nine in a row. In the first Kings-Timberwolves meeting this season (Dec. 26), Minnesota won a rare road game, 105-104 in double overtime, despite not having all-star center Karl-Anthony Towns.

Towns has typically performed well against the Kings, winning 10 of 15 games, while scoring over 25 points in eight of those contests. Expect Towns to feast inside against a Kings team missing their best defensive player and rebounder in Holmes.

We are on the Timberwolves (-154) to win tonight but PASS on the moneyline in favor of a more profitable against the spread wager.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

To be honest, this is just a plug your nose and pick a side type of bet because if you dig into the recent betting trends of either squad you’ll be a little sickened. The Kings are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven games overall but the Timberwolves are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall.

BET TIMBERWOLVES (-2.5, -115) since they are the home team and the recent history between the two clubs favors Minnesota. The Timberwolves have won and covered the spread in each of their last three games versus the Kings, plus they have won their last four home games against Sacramento by an average score of 119-103.

Over/Under (O/U)

I LEAN OVER 225.5 (-115) because the total is too low to pass up. The Under cashed in the last two Kings-Timberwolves games but the Over/Under record is 6-4 in their last 10 meetings. Their combined O/U record on the season is 47-44 and Kings games against Western Conference opponents have an O/U record of 9-3. The Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Minnesota.

Prediction

Kings 111, Pistons 104

Moneyline (ML)

The Kings dropped their fifth straight Monday with a 118-113 overtime loss at Miami after a crushing fourth-quarter collapse. Detroit lost 106-100 at Washington Monday to end a two-game winning streak. Derrick Rose had his ninth consecutive 20 or more points game against the Wizards, however, and his name has been included in trade rumors due to the Pistons being a tank candidate.

The edge goes to the road team — Kings -115 — in this matchup. Motivation has to be through the roof for Sacramento to snap its losing streak and the Kings have won their last two meetings against the Pistons (both last season). Plus look at the injury report for the Pistons, who could be without five key contributors. Rebounding is key to this matchup — the team that got the most rebounds won eight out of the previous 10 Kings-Pistons games — so if Drummond isn’t out there, the Pistons could be in big trouble on the glass. Also, Detroit has played the second-easiest schedule in the NBA.

BET KINGS -115. New to sports betting? You would need to bet $115 on the Kings to win outright to make a $100 profit.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

BET KINGS -1.5 (-106) since it’s such a bettor-friendly vig and the low probability of Kings-Pistons being decided by a single point.

New to sports betting? Bet $53 on the Kings to win by 2 or more points to earn a profit of $50.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 222.5 (-106) is the right play here mostly because both teams are trash offensively. The Kings rank 24th in points per game and 21st in offensive rating, while the Pistons are 21st in PPG and 19th in offensive rating. Both teams also play at a slower tempo; Sacramento ranks 28th in Pace and Detroit ranks 20th. Furthermore, the referees assigned to this game have a combined over/under record of 40-45 so far this season.
