Q&A: Tyrese Maxey on his first All-Star Weekend, Kevin Durant’s praise and more

“I’m able to channel it because it’s real joy,” Tyrese Maxey told For The Win.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is enjoying his best professional season yet and just made his first appearance in the NBA All-Star Game.

The 23-year-old former Kentucky standout is having a breakout season and has emerged as a second star alongside Joel Embiid for Philadelphia. He was chosen to represent the Eastern Conference after averaging a career-high 25.7 points and 6.4 assists per game.

While he was in Indiana for the festivities, Maxey received deserved praise from many around the league, including Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, who said the guard could eventually become one of the faces of the NBA.

For The Win chatted with Maxey on Saturday to discuss his time at All-Star Weekend, his goals for the remainder of the season and more.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

What are the highest scoring NBA All-Star games in league history?

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game set the record for the highest combined scoring total at halftime in All-Star Game history.

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game set the record for the highest combined scoring total at halftime in All-Star Game history.

During the first half, the Eastern Conference scored 104 points while the West scored 89. For comparison, that means the East scored more points in one half than they did in the entire game in four consecutive years between 1953 and 1956.

How does this massive scoring performance between the two teams at the All-Star Game compare to other high marks in league history, though? Of course, the final score (211-186) took the pole position.

After returning to the old format of East vs. West and removing the Elam ending, all records broke. This wasn’t exactly a surprise considering even before 2024, nine of the highest-scoring NBA All-Star Games had occurred within the last 10 seasons.

Here are the updated highest-scoring totals that the NBA has ever seen in an All-Star Game:

Mac McClung won the 2024 NBA Slam Dunk Contest (again) and these were all the best photos

Mac McClung has officially made history, winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in back-to-back seasons.

Mac McClung has officially made history, winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in back-to-back seasons.

The high-flying G League guard took home the honors after an impressive performance, which included dunking over Shaquille O’Neal, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indiana. McClung beat out Celtics forward Jaylen Brown, Heat rookie Jamie Jaquez Jr. and Knicks forward Jacob Toppin.

Here were the best photos of the night in which McClung was once again crowned champ:

TNT somehow didn’t show the first Jaylen Brown dunk contest slam on TV and fans were shocked

This was an egregious mistake by the TNT crew.

The NBA was finally able to convince an All-Star player to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest and immediately made a massive mistake.

Jaylen Brown, an All-Star in the Eastern Conference for the Boston Celtics, had planned a cool tribute to two-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion Dominique Wilkins.

It was his first dunk of the night and one of the most anticipated moments of the evening at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Yet somehow, TNT’s TV broadcast missed Brown’s dunk as it happened because they were too focused on filming the LED court.

Basketball fans were shocked by the fact that the camera crew botched this one on the broadcast.

Here were some of the immediate reactions to the mistake:

Social media reacts to Sabrina Ionescu’s three-point shootout vs. Stephen Curry

Basketball fans reacted to the thrilling three-point shootout between Sabrina Ionescu and Stephen Curry at NBA All-Star Weekend.

“If you can shoot, you can shoot. It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl.”

That’s a statement that Oregon Ducks legend Sabrina Ionescu backed up on Saturday night at All-Star Weekend, going toe-to-toe with Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, arguably the greatest shooter in the history of the sport.

Ionescu held her own in the three-point contest, ultimately losing 29-26 in the one-round event that came down to the final couple of shots.

Sabrina went first in the contest, hitting her first 8 shots and getting out to a blistering pace. She ultimately made 19 shots, and her 26 points were as many as any of the NBA players scored in the three-point contest earlier in the night, won by Damian Lillard.

Of course, Curry came in and lit it up, ultimately winning the first-ever NBA vs. WNBA three-point competition.

Judging by the reaction from fans on social media, it certainly won’t be the last.

Fans criticized refs for allowing 3-point contest participants to shoot with their feet on the line

If fans are betting on who wins, these rules need to get enforced.

For the second year in a row, Damian Lillard won the NBA’s 3-point contest. But it didn’t come without its moments of controversy.

Even after the competition was over and Lillard was crowned champion, the Bucks star point guard acknowledged that the refs were not exactly showing a lot of due diligence during the competition.

He said that while he saw referees on the court, he noticed that they weren’t enforcing the rules of the contest.

While the participants may have found themselves a bit distracted by the fancy LED court at Lucas Oil Stadium, the refs had more responsibility to not count the shots that were taken while players had their feet on the line.

Especially if fans are betting on who wins this competition, long 2-pointers shouldn’t count and these rules need to be enforced.

Fans love the cool LED court the NBA is using for All-Star Weekend in Indiana

This court definitely looks AWESOME.

The NBA showcased new technology with an LED court for All-Star Weekend in Indiana and it was hard to not notice this innovation.

While it was unclear beforehand how fans would react to the new look for the festivities, it didn’t take long for fans to immediately fall in love with what they saw at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Even though we won’t get to see the All-Star Game played on these fancy courts this year, fans seemed impressed with what the LED courts could do to entertain them during the festivities.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reveals what the Thunder need to win championship

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reveals what the Thunder need to win a championship.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Oklahoma City Thunder have entered the contention conversation this season despite their youthfulness.

The Thunder (37-17) are one game out of first place in the Western Conference at the All-Star break. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP-esque season has elevated OKC to among the best teams in the league.

When asked during his All-Star media session what the Thunder need to do to win a championship, Gilgeous-Alexander said what they need the most is more time.

“Usually experience, the teams that have gone through multiple playoff series and multiple guys that have gotten to that level know what it takes to get over the hump and do so,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “That’s something that, honestly, just has to come with us playing in more games. Maybe we give it time. Maybe we don’t.

“But we have no ceiling on what we think we can do this year. We kind of take the same mentality and just stay in the moment, plug away every day. Where we get at the end of the year, whenever the end of our season is, we’ll look back and make adjustments and try to figure out then. As of right now, we just try to stay focused on the task at hand.”

It might not be a flashy answer, but it’s the probable correct one. The Thunder will need to undergo battle scars in the playoffs to have sustainable success, as most teams who were also in their shoes did.

Player grades: Jalen Williams hits game-winner in 2024 Rising Stars challenge

Player grades for the 3 Thunder players who participated in the 2024 Rising Stars challenge.

INDIANAPOLIS — Crossing the ball between his legs, Jalen Williams pulled up for the deep 3-pointer to clinch the Rising Stars win for Jalen Rose’s squad.

The game-clinching basket capped off an impressive two-game outing for Williams and Chet Holmgren. All three 2024 Rising Stars challenge matchups featured an Oklahoma City Thunder player.

“We were up a good amount of points to where if I missed, it didn’t matter,” Williams said on his game-winner. “… I fake ran a stack play so they can go under and I can shoot a three. I don’t know if the team knows that’s what I had intended but that’s what I was gonna do.”

Jalen Rose’s squad advanced to the finals following a tight 40-35 win over Tamika Catchings’ team in the semifinals. Williams had two points, three assists and three rebounds. Holmgren had five points on 2-of-4 shooting, three rebounds and one assist.

Meanwhile, Pau Gasol’s squad suffered a 41-36 loss in the semifinals to Detlef Schrempf’s roster. It was an upset as Schrempf’s roster was G League players and two-way players. Cason Wallace contributed with eight points on 3-of-8 shooting and one assist.

Rose came out victorious in the finals over Schrempf, 26-13. Williams had five points on 2-of-3 shooting, three assists and two rebounds. He shot 1-of-2 from 3. Holmgren had two points, two rebounds, one block and one steal.

It’s a great opportunity to come out here and kind of just mingle with the guys,” Williams said on the Rising Stars. “It’s a unique platform, you play with people you probably wouldn’t play with. You’re playing in front of teammates you wouldn’t play with. It’s a good time to kind of play free.

“Win or lose, it doesn’t really matter. Shows what guys can do and kind of puts guys on the map as well.”

Holmgren added: “It’s a great opportunity to have fun and also put out a good product for the fans. Throughout the season, you don’t get a chance to talk to a lot of these guys. There were definitely some dudes who I thought, I don’t rock with this dude. He’s kind of weird. He be mean mugging. Then you get in the locker room with them, and they’re super cool.”

Let’s look at the Rising Stars challenge grades for the Thunder’s three players.
