All the players who could wear a No. 6 jersey in 2022-23 after the NBA’s plans to retire it to honor Bill Russell

The league recently announced plans to retire Russell’s No. 6 jersey across the league to honor the Celtics great, but some players are excepted.

The NBA and Boston Celtics plan to honor Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell for his unparalleled career in the league and his dedication to fighting for civil rights and social justice by retiring his No. 6 jersey league-wide.

The move — unprecedented in league history — honors the singular life Russell lived on and off the court. Russell was the NBA’s ultimate winner with a record 13 titles to his name as a player or player-coach. He also  achieved or was a part of many milestones, including being a part of the first all-Black starting five and the first Black head coach in league history. Through it all, he used his platform to fight for others in a time when that put his career at great risk.

The players in the league wearing No. 6 jerseys in 2021-22 will be allowed to continue to do so until they either switch to a new number or retire from the game. Let’s take a look at the players who could wear that jersey number next season.

Former Spartan Bryn Forbes signs with the Minnesota Timberwolves

Bryn Forbes has signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves

The NBA career of Bryn Forbes will continue. After going undrafted back in 2016, Bryn Forbes has created a nice career for himself as a three-point specialist, and even won an NBA championship in 2021 with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Now, Forbes will extend his career, signing a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a veteran minimum contract.

5 realistic free agents Sixers should take a look at in 2022 offseason

Here are 5 free agents the Philadelphia 76ers should take a look at as they get into the 2022 offseason.

As the Philadelphia 76ers head into the draft and free agency portion of the offseason, there are some issues that have to be addressed with the roster. One is the lack of a “dawg” on the roster, which is something Joel Embiid wants addressed while the Sixers also need a 3-and-D player.

At the moment, the Sixers have the $6.4 million taxpayer mid-level exception to use, but they could open the full $10.3 million mid-level exception if they waive Danny Green, who will miss a good portion of the 2022-23 season.

Now, Philadelphia could clear more salary by dumping Furkan Korkmaz, Matisse Thybulle and Georges Niang. That would allow them to go after the bigger fish in the free agency pond, but they haven’t done so yet. So this list will be operating under the above parameters.

Here are five free agents who would fit the Sixers’ needs:

Woj: Celtics trade Juancho Hernangomez to Spurs in 3-team deal netting Bol Bol, PJ Dozier

Boston will save roughly $4.3 million on their salary cap impact with the trade.

The Juancho Hernangomez era of the Boston Celtics has come to a close with new reporting from ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski revealing that the Celtics are trading the Spanish forward to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team deal that will send Bryn Forbes to the Denver Nuggets and both Bol Bol and PJ Dozier to the Celtics.

Both Bol and Dozier will miss considerable time with respective injuries, the former eight weeks to three months with foot surgery and the latter the season with an ACL tear. Dozier, who will be in his second stint with Boston, might never suit up for the team given he will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, while Bol will be a restricted free agent by season’s end.

The trade will shave off about $4.3 million from their current roster cap hit, making getting out of the tax a much simpler affair should the team go that route.

Per Woj, the Celtics have no plans to waive either, and believe their Bird Rights could be useful this offseason. Bol had been averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game with Denver, while Dozier recorded 5.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game with the Nuggets in 2021-22.

Former MSU basketball sharpshooter Bryn Forbes traded to Denver Nuggets

Bryn Forbes is heading to Denver as part of a three-team trade

Bryn Forbes has carved himself a nice career as a role player in the NBA. Forbes spent the first majority, four years, of his career with the San Antonio Spurs. In his fifth season, he won an NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks and elected to return to San Antonio in the offseason following the championship run. He will now be taking his role to the Denver Nuggets in hopes to aid them in a late-season push and playoff run.

Forbes will bring a sharpshooting presence to Denver’s bench, something they are desperately in search of. So far this season, Forbes is averaging 9.1 points on 41.7% shooting from 3.

New B/R analysis highlights four trade targets to add shooting to the Boston Celtics

But do any of them make sense for the Celtics to pursue?

While there certainly is no shortage of issues that the Boston Celtics could point to that need to improve if the team is to get closer to the title team aspirations the storied franchise always has, perhaps none figure more prominently than shooting.

Such is the focus of a recent article by Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz, who highlights this negative aspect of the Celtics’ offensive capabilities in a recent article focused on what disappointing teams need to focus on in 2022 onward. “Grant Williams is the only rotation player shooting above 38.1 percent from three, with two starters (Al Horford and Marcus Smart) connecting on 29.2 percent or worse of their attempts,” notes Swartz.

With this lack of accuracy away from the basket a significant issue, the B/R analyst lists several targets Boston could pursue this season — let’s dive into the logic for each.

Four potential Boston Celtics targets as the 2021-22 trade market begins to heat up

Recent reports suggest these players could be on the move.

With December 15th just around the corner and many if not most teams in the league interested as the Boston Celtics likely are in making moves on the trade market to improve their fortunes in the 2021-22 season and beyond, trade rumors are beginning to percolate.

On Monday, The Athletic’s NBA Insider Shams Charania reported on the state of the trade market ahead of Wednesday’s trade restriction expiry date, and a handful of potential trade targets who might be a good fit for what the Celtics need stood out. Boston will of course have to compete against the offers of an unknown number of teams which could drive up an ask, but there’s a good chance the roster looks considerably different before the 2022 NBA trade deadline passes, if not sooner.

Let’s take a look at some of the better options for the Celtics discussed by Charania.

Pat Connaughton NBA Tracker: Eastern Conference Semifinals

How did Notre Dame’s lone current NBA product do in an epic seven-game series win?

For the second time in three years, Pat Connaughton and the Milwaukee Bucks are headed to the NBA Eastern Conference finals. In a hard-fought seven-game series against the second-seeded Brooklyn Nets, Connaughton tied with Bryn Forbes as the Bucks’ leading bench scorer for the series at 4.6 points a game. His 3.6 rebounds a game were the most in the series for out of the three bench players who played in all seven contests.

Connaughton’s high mark against the Nets came in the Bucks’ Game 5 loss. He scored 10 points on 57.1 percent shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds. He came close to matching that in Game 7 with nine points and four boards. Perhaps his biggest impact came in a Game 4 win, during which he scored eight points and collected a playoff career-high four steals, a number he also achieved as his career regular-season best Feb. 12 against the Utah Jazz.

Connaughton shot 40.7 percent from the field for the series and 28.6 percent from 3-point range. Those numbers could have been a bit higher, but he went scoreless twice during the series. That included a Game 6 showing in which he missed all five of his shots, all of which came from beyond the arc. While it’s become clear at this point that he is nothing more than a supporting player for the Bucks, he undoubtedly will want to avoid games like that again as the playoffs continue.
