Rumor: Boston Celtics on the hunt for ‘potential defensive wing upgrades’

The situation is as muddy as it can get when it comes to trade intel.

It is the pinnacle of Silly Season ahead of the final moments remaining in the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, with the moratorium on deals for the season to fully arrive by 3 p.m. ET today. And that silliness can be seen in conflicting reports on whether the Boston Celtics are done making moves ahead of it.

Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer believes Boston is done for the day, but MassLive’s Brian Robb had heard that the Celtics plan to stay active ahead of the deadline in search of additional moves. Add in that HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto has heard that Boston is exploring ways to bolster their bench, and it gets murkier.

The HoopsHype reporter shares that Boston “has also gauged the market on packaging some of their minimum contract players, such as Svi Mykhailiuk and Dalano Banton, along with future draft pick compensation, for potential defensive wing upgrades.”

The situation is as muddy as it can get when it comes to trade intel.

Given Fischer’s is the most recent, perhaps it is also the most accurate — or smokescreen to try to get an ask down to a level worth calling in the deal.

Celtics Lab 91: Digging into the new-look Celtics and the trade deadline aftermath with Anna Horford

In this episode, we talk about the new-look Celtics and the human side of the trade deadline with Anna Horford.

The 2022 NBA trade deadline has come and gone, and with it and the time needed for their young roster and new coach to gel, the Boston Celtics are a very different team.

A league-leading defense and a humming offense finally have the Celtics looking like the team many hoped they’d become, with this iteration of the team looking like it’s going to make some noise in the postseason. And while there’s plenty to be happy about, it’s worth remembering that as much as the NBA is a business, much of the work that takes place at the deadline isn’t so easy on players and their families.

To strike a balance between the two poles, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast got together with friend of the pod Anna Horford to talk about what the deadline was like for her brother Al and her family, the team’s new look and both sides of the coin regarding what went into it.

Justin Quinn, Alex Goldberg, and Cam Tabatabaie also talk about everything from Deuce Tatum’s budding stardom to whether Al will be dancing at Anna’s wedding coming up soon, so be sure to tune in to hear it all.

Happy to be back in Boston, Daniel Theis is looking forward to finishing the season a Celtic

The War on Theis is back, and the man himself couldn’t be happier about it.

“I’m happy and grateful to be back,” said recently-reunited Boston Celtic Daniel Theis of the team that had just traded to get the same player they had dealt away at the previous trade deadline, and before any reporter could even get a question in to the veteran big man about his return to the team.

Theis, who was dealt to the Chicago Bulls as a last-minute deal to duck underneath the luxury tax at this stage of the 2020-21 NBA season, was speaking with the media in Boston for the first time since being dealt back to the Celtics from the Houston Rockets on Thursday.

“I was kind of relieved,” said the German big man of how he felt when he got the news he’d been traded back to Boston.

WATCH: Did the Boston Celtics overpay for the Derrick White trade?

Or was it just the cost of doing business?

By now most fans and analysts are starting to see the vision behind why Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens traded veteran shooting guard Josh Richardson and wing Romeo Langford for San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White, with his passing, defense, and even shooting helping the team continue its league-longest winning streak.

But the Celtics paid a substantial price in terms of assets to land the San Antonio player, doling out not only Richardson and Langford but also handed over a 2022 first-round draft pick and a 2028 first-round pick swap to get the trade across the finish line in a move some are calling an overpay.

Did the Celtics spend too much to get their guy? Or was it just the cost of doing business in the NBA of today?

The hosts of the CLNS Media podcast “Celtics Beat” Evan Valenti and Adam Kaufman recently debated this question on a recent podcast — check out the clip embedded above to get their takes on if Boston overspent on the Derrick White trade at the deadline.

What do opposing teams think about the moves the Boston Celtics made at the trade deadline?

Heavy.com’s Steve Bulpett found out.

Now that the dust on the 2022 NBA trade deadline has settled a bit, we are getting our first looks at how the new additions each team picked up look playing for their new clubs, and for the Boston Celtics, the results have been very positive with two more wins baked as the team extended their current winning streak to eight games, the longest such streak in the league.

There has been some reaction from front offices around the NBA to the trades made at the deadline as well, with Heavy.com’s Steve Bulpett checking in with a number of employees of opposing teams to see what they thought of the moves made by the Celtics, particularly the Derrick White trade.

“Marcus Smart’s been playing really well, but everybody says the Jays need a point guard, and I think they just got a very unselfish, hard-playing guy that will move the ball and play great defense,” shared one such anonymous general manager.

WATCH: Can the Boston Celtics’ 2022 NBA trade deadline moves make them into the San Antonio Spurs of the East?

Or does this team have work to do to match team president Brad Stevens’ vision for the team?

It is no secret that new Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has long cast a longing eye towards the southwest as he wants the Celtics to play more like the San Antonio Spurs under legendary head coach Gregg Popovich with plenty of ball movement and off-ball activity coupled with fundamentally sound, lockdown defense.

Now, after having robbed a not-small portion of the Popovich coaching tree with new head coach Ime Udoka and assistant Will Hardy to name a few, Boston has also reshaped its roster to play more like the Spurs — including trading for San Antonio guard Derrick White at the 2022 NBA trade deadline.

Can the Celtics become the Spurs of the East with these moves? Former Sports Illustrated reporter Ian Thomsen joined the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast Evan Valenti and Adam Kaufman for a recent episode where they explored this very issue.

WATCH: Are the Boston Celtics a better team than before the 2022 NBA trade deadline?

After a transformation of their bench, just how much better is this team?

Are the Boston Celtics a better team than they were before the 2022 NBA trade deadline? The team made some financial moves to dip below the tax by sending out a pair of players out for the season on expiring deals in Bol Bol and PJ Dozier, turned Romeo Langford, Josh Richardson and draft assets into Derrick White, and wrested old friend Daniel Theis back from the Houston Rockets by sending them Dennis Schroder, Enes Kanter Freedom, and Bruno Fernando.

Then, with five empty roster spots in need of filling, they elevated two way forward Sam Hauser to a full contract and signed Luke Kornet to a rest-of-season deal as well. There are more moves to come given how few players are with the Celtics at the moment — but are they a better team than they were last Wednesday?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast Adam Kaufman and Evan Valenti got together with guest and former Sports Illustrated reporter Ian Thomsen to discuss exactly this question, and seem to be amenable to what the front office did in the trade market to improve the team.

WATCH: The Derrick White trade might not be a disaster for the Boston Celtics, but was it good?

How are analysts looking at the trade?

Despite a generally positive initial reaction for the Boston Celtics trade that sent out veteran shooting guard Josh Richardson, wing Romeo Langford, a first-round pick, and a pick swap for Derrick White, a subset of fans and analysts initially questioned — some infamously so — whether it was actually a good trade.

So far, it has been anything but a disaster, but there’s a case to be made it was a slight overpay. Is it the cost of doing business in today’s NBA, or should Boston have held out for a cheaper ask? More importantly, just how much can White’s skillset help the Celtics moving forward?

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie and Mo Dakhil got together to talk over what Boston did at the trade deadline, even touching on the deal that swapped out Dennis Schroder for Daniel Theis.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear all they have to say on the new-look Celtics and their deadline deals that made them so.

Did the Boston Celtics ‘master the Deal Zone’ at the 2022 NBA trade deadline?

What’s the ‘Deal Zone,’ you ask? Read and find out.

Did the Boston Celtics “master the Deal Zone” at the 2022 NBA trade deadline? Such is the question posed by Defector’s Chris Thompson in a recent trade deadline roundup article trying to assess how each of the league’s 30 teams did dealing players at a deadline that saw 22 of the 30 clubs in the NBA move players and/or assets in a trade last Thursday.

You might be wondering what exactly the “Deal Zone” is if you were not as glued to your device(s) all the live-long day as many of us were, which was a weird little sobriquet for the negotiations that definitely were not happening until they were done between the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets regarding a one James Harden.

But you aren’t here to read about that, so let’s check out what Thompson thinks about Boston’s “Deal Zone” performance.

Celtics coach Ime Udoka shared why he believes new arrival Derrick White will be ‘perfect fit on and off the court’

Udoka has coached White previously in San Antonio.

For fans of the Boston Celtics, a reunion of sorts was put together in one of the several trades made the storied franchise on the 2022 NBA trade deadline this past Thursday in bringing back big man Daniel Theis from the Houston Rockets. For Celtics head coach Ime Udoka, however, the reunion came in a different deal — the one that landed Boston San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White.

Udoka had been an assistant coach early in White’s NBA career when both were part of the Spurs organization. Now, after stints as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets organizations for the Celtics coach as an assistant, the two are back together.

Speaking on local radio on the “Zolak and Bertrand” show, he shared his thoughts on why White was going to fit well with his new team. “He checks a ton of boxes,” explained Udoka.
